Neil..
¡Olé for your BRASS COJONES on this matter!!!
You and Steven have pulled a miracle out of your....

VERY SMART move on your part, too...the AUDIO_TS Folder for free??...
anyway, I'm guessing it didn't take you long to come up with it....

Cheers!

YYYYAAAAAAAYYYY!!!!!
A big thanks to SW and NW. I can order them now. I wish you two guys would start your own company selling licensed surround releases.
Kind of like a K-Tel for surround, but without the cheesyness :)

I have a masterplan where warehouses open up in major city locations and sell CDs & DVDs like Amazon without the postage costs. Perhaps they could also sell HiFi equipment and other software.
There can be specialist sections that have SACD, DVD-A and high end audio CDs.
Like a Costco that sells music.

I was wondering about WBMF also. I thought the tapes were lost. But if they DO release it, would it contain the ENTIRE show? I believe all that was missing was PAAE and Rondo?
And the original PAAE would sound FANTASTIC if it were mixed in surround for sure! That recording, at least to my ears, sounded better than WBMF and they must have recorded more of the show. Extras from THAT show would be VERY cool!

I didn't know they also played Rondo! It would be as cool as it gets to have them both (Pictures and Rondo) on a new release!
I confess that though I'm a little bit anxious on what is being planned on PAAE (the live album) and In Concert (one can dream it'll go beyond the 6 early albums), my main concern on a new ELP collection is WBMF. That's my all time favorite prog album. Nevertheless I was never satisfied with its CD releases. I wish the Quad masters appeared and, also, wish the Cal Jam videotapes existed somewhere (I guess that's the only video portrait of that ELP era, though not the same show as WBMF).

I believe, if my memory is still intact, that PAAE and then Rondo was ELP's encore during the BSS tour. And Cal Jam? that's another story of erased/missing video tapes.

Just imagine Steven and Neil mixing and mastering with Burning Shed handling distribution. Mining the Sony vaults for all that classic music and mixing to hi-rez 5.1 DVDA. Neil offering the same deal to Sony so they continue the arrangement. Us taking up a collection to pay Neil his normal fee. Everybody happy because:
1) we get the hi-rez surround classic music for a reasonable price
2) Neil continues his paying gig
3) Steven gets to mix the entire Sony catalog in 5.1
4) Burning Shed becomes premier distributor with top notch customer service and rates.

Surprising how close this is to being more than a dream. Thanks, guys. Please consider the collaboration.

I have the denial fantasy that ELP (band/management) keep the Cal Jam video officially missing in order to release it one day with maximum appeal (LOL)!Maybe a 40th Year Anniversary on 2014? Fingers crossed.

I'm not sure if ELP band/staff "search" very well, and I hope I'm right, so Cal Jam can still appear.
I suppose they're not the best on finding things when thinking about the Manticore Special video "official" release (DVD). The documentary is great, but I can't stand its awful release and the real bad shape print they used. I read somewhere they used the best they've found: an old back-up copy without the original narrator and with that non-sense scene in which Emerson composes, in 1973, at home, the Endless Enigma's Fugue from 1972 or earlier!!!
BBC, as far as I know, had and still has the "real thing" Manticore Special, with that low voice narrator and with the right scene, in which Emerson composes the Piano Concerto at home (instead of the Fugue) in 1973 (it makes sense!). Some years ago BBC did a TV rerun of it (Old Gray Whistle Test). The print was in great shape!
I guess ELP/management could have used their heads a little better and say when going for the Manticore Special release: "What if we asked BBC???" After all, it was BBC that aired it originally. Maybe they just didn't care because fans would buy it anyway!

Anyway, do you think that it is so unlikely that someone around the world holds a copy (even a copy of a copy) of the Cal Jam complete video? Please, say that's possible!!!

I only wish Neil and Steven would have been in a position to do this with the Caravan release, although Neil didn't author that one unfortunately. It was done by a company called re:fine.

I'd take any of the Caravan stuff in DVD-A but if the ELP stuff does well, one never knows!!

And if and when WBMF shows up... I'll die a happy man.
ELP were at their best live IMHO and this was always my favorite.

I haven't been checking information here for a while but ,wow, what a fantastic gift from Steve Wilson, a BIG BIG THANKYOU for convincing the record label to put these out in Dvd Audio.
On a totally different note I find its to bad that Steven is putting his own stuff out in Blu Ray now and not Dvd Audio as Dvd Audio's can be played is so many more hardware configurations and selfishly as I am considering more and more in getting a Acura car with ELS in it they play Dvd Audio's but not Blu ray's.
For car audio that's a lost revenue stream as I think over time there will be more and more converts looking for Dvd Audio's to be able to use in car's.
Oh well, again really glad that the ELP is coming out in Dvd Audio, that is still amazing, here's to hoping more bands put stuff out in Dvd Audio.

Absolutely amazing, I should have been reading all this yesterday. It's practically a miracle and I had to refrain from saying "it'll never happen" during the petition portion of this discussion, adhering to a no buzzkill policy.

Now that I have the back story, HUGE thanks for Neil for making the difference and tipping the scales in OUR direction! I will spread the word through Facebook accounts and Twitter and anything else I can to be sure that people who don't follow music news very closely will get the message and pony up. I've already pre-ordered them when I didn't know and may have to do it again just to celebrate!

All of the ELP & King Crimson music is very close to my heart and for 10 years I've requested 5.1 versions in every venue that I found where one could ask ELP questions. This is just a fabulous gift and I'm very grateful to all who have not only made this possible but opened the door to perhaps even more! Cheers. (smashing of glass objects and furinture breaking commences now)

Many thanks to Steven and Neil for making this happen, and to the many who wrote to the label. Even though we weren't the deciding factor, we went on record of what we wanted, and it's still there for the label to make future considerations. That was by no means insignificant.

Hi again folks, a little update:

Although Sony may not have seen your petition, I was certainly aware of it and the enthusiasm for these being issued on a high res format. In fact we do owe Sony our gratitude - they basically fired their regular authoring house from the job (after a pretty poor effort) and have taken a leap of faith in delaying release and trusting me enough to have "my guy" Neil do the job instead - politics in major companies does not often allow for these kind of things to happen, so respect to them for that.

A couple of other things:

- the mixes on the DVDA (including the new stereo mix) are flat transfers - unlike on the CD, no mastering has been done, EQ, limiting or compression.

- I took the opportunity to reconsider and to scrap the idea of the alternative Tarkus running order, so the stereo bonus material now appears at the end of a new mix of the complete album including that classic Are you Ready Eddy (-;

The 5.1 remixing work has taken a bit of a backseat to my own music for the last year (the 2 ELPs were done last Summer, release schedules take a while to catch up), but I have just finished a mix of another classic 1972 album, not progressive rock this time - news on that soon I hope.

Best
SW

Steven, thanks for all your efforts, and thanks again for taking the time to update us!

I just preordered both and am looking forward to the other ELPs and the mystery 1972 release...good excuse for a new thread? :)

Wow! excellent news SW!!! Thank you for your time and effort in doing this... it is (and will be forever) much appreciated!

Now lets see what else is coming!

Thanks again Steven, this is a sublime experience!

Seems the big 4 studio records are probably going to be addressed wonderfully, will await word on the balance of their catalog especially the life material that desperately needs your touch when time permits.

You wouldn't know first hand but 1972 was was a very good year; looking forward to this next surprise!

Thanks so much Steven for the update and for the excellent work with Sony. You have obviously earned their trust and respect.

Whoohoo! Let the speculation begin!

Happy Friday everyone! :friday:

Steven, thanks for continuing to fly the flag for Hi-Rez and Surround Sound. In fact, it was my interest in surround sound that lead me to Porcupine Tree, No-Man, your solo records...keep up the good work and know that it is truly appreciated!

Thanks so much for all your work Steven and Neil. I grew up listening to so much of this music - ELP, KC, J Tull etc, and to see them getting these great 5.1 mixes, giving them almost a "new life" is just beyond words.
