Yes, I saw the new release was in 5.1, so I wondered if they could possibly have the original stems archived from a 1953 movie. Maybe they just threw some modern ambient foley into the rears, and kept the front the same.
I've heard this for so long now, I'll believe it when I see it! (Sadly, this is my same response to a ever seeing a proper release of "The Abyss", despite a decade of rumors).
Actually, Criterion's War of the Worlds has a discrete 5.1 surround mix.
Ironically, the Abyss is shown on cable in a very healthy 2K version but I'm sure when it arrives as a Native UHD4K disc with a Dolby Atmos codec, it will be something very special. James Cameron has been very absorbed for the past few years with his Avatar Sequels which might explain the delay of The Abyss in a modern restoration. And perhaps like his incredible Titanic 3D upconversion, we might even have the ultimate pleasure of the Abyss in 3D [albeit 1080p] as well as 4K.
