The 5.1 mix on this is a lot lower in volume than the dvd-a. Not sure if more dynamic or not.

Just listened to the first track and compared the Atmos to the 5.1. It is surprisingly LESS adventurous than the 5.1, the vocals are more washed out, and the bass isn't as tight. They've also replaced "The test begins NOW" and "The test is over" with, well, noise.

I hope this isn't indicative of the rest of the disc. Yikes...

EDIT:

Wait! The amp for my overhead speakers was off! Ok, going to listen again. Sorry!

Ok, now that I'm actually listening to all 5.1.4 Atmos channels, I still prefer the 5.1 mix. The individual instruments come through clearer, the vocals are more upfront and the bass is punchier. And the 5.1 is much more adventurous. I'm so surprised.

Going to keep going and see how the rest of the album sounds...

Ok, tracks 2 and 3 in Atmos are almost as adventurous as the 5.1. But the fidelity of the 5.1 is SO much better. The bass is deeper, the guitars really cut through, I'm so surprised! It's like the Atmos has a gauze-y haze over it, and the 5.1 is just to PRESENT.

RHINO should've hired Elliot Scheiner to do the ATMOS mix as well. Played the 5.1 DVD~A a few weeks ago on my new system and it was beyond SUPER Fantastic!

This is my knee-jerk reaction. I might agree with you. In the opening track, in the 5.1, there is pronounced panning, which is super fun. The Atmos doesn't catch that dramatic panning. At least, I don't think it does.

I've never been good at comparing different mixes as my memory of what I'm hearing isn't the greatest.

I'm the same way, but quickly switching mixes on the disc (even though it causes the song to start over) gives you the immediate gut punch of just how good the 5.1 SOUNDS, compared to the Atmos, which feels like it's a generation or two removed.

Listening now, and not doing an A/B -- been a while since I heard the 5.1 -- but I find the use of the heights significant and interesting. Rather than a panning-fest, there is that full theater effect of Atmos where an expanded field has voices in all directions. The heights rule here so far. [edit: 7.2.4 system]

The Atmos is not dynamic-range compressed at all so really needs to be turned up to do a comparison with the 5.1. Even turning it up doesn't really compare because the 5.1 DR peaks are all near zero where the Atmos is truly dynamic with peaks from zero to -6.05. I don't know of a way to get the DR from Atmos so I extracted the 7.1 to flac and used the SoX vol 4.97dB command to raise the overall volume of the 7.1 flac by 4.97 dB. The lowest peak in the 7.1 was 4.97dB (Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots pt.2) so raising the volume by 4.97dB preserved the dynamic range but brought the overall volume closer to the 5.1.

I'm loving the dynamic range of the Atmos and it doesn't grind on my ears like the 5.1 did. The dynamic-range compressed 5.1 really wore me out and I couldn't listen to it for long. I can listen to this Atmos all day and I don't notice any reduction in bass or clarity, but my ears aren't what they were.

Here are the DR differences between the Atmos and 5.1:
