I don't think any of us doubted whether it was real or not. I think many of us would like an objective review rather than a bunch of bouncy smilies and fan boy giddyness please.

It seems you don't have a clue why I posted "it is real". Listen to the song It

Now, with your kind of comments I'm not going to post any review

Just listening to it. Outstanding, overwhelming, incredible. I`m so happy to finally get it. More later. Will buy a second box of the same release on Monday to collect.
Best regards Timm Rautmann

Good. It wouldn't have been objective anyway.

what is objetive?

hate the new mixes to show off yourself and claim you have better ears and listening skills?

Whatever. If you don't like the mixes, don't try to spoil this wonderful moment in Genesis' history

Even the audiophiles of the stevehoffman forum dig the new mixes :phones

Listened to Foxtrot, Selling England by ..., Lamb lies down... to this moment - up to now. Wonderful surround mixes - in good old quadraphonic tradition.
The sound is like analog master tape sounds like.
Closing my eyes I can imagine a 4 channel tape recorder is playing. The sound all over is more smooth than the newer releases - the other 2 boxes.
Everybody in this forum will be greatly satisfied.
I still have 2 disc to go and the extra one.
But I never had the feeling, I wanted to skip to the next track. I just let them play straight from the beginning to the end.

It is like chrismas.

This box received 4 1/2 stars in Rolling Stone and not a single mention of the 5.1 mixes:rolleyes:.

So they sound better than the last 2? That is good news.

Got nervous about my Wherehouse order for the box going to Backordered status today, wrote to them about it. I was assured that the listing was still good and they were working on having them for the 11th. I've got the box at a ridiculous price but THESE albums are the fricking Genesis holy grail and now I hear they sound better than the other two boxes? I'd pay a lot to have them right now and I may before all is said and done....

Only a magic that a name would stain....

My order with Amazon Canada now says "shipping soon" - estimated delivery is Nov. 18.

Some German dealers did not have the box in stock. I could not wait and bought the box at a higher price at Media Markt: 120€. The German Saturn offered 99 €, but I could not buy it on Friday. 20€ more - in that case - I waited more then a year to buy it.

But I already listen to the box twice - it`s worth more then the 120€ at least for me.

I read a comment by Nick Davis when questioned how this last Boxset is going to sell and he said it has sold(in presales) as much as the first 2 Boxsets combined already. Guess all us old timers are bucking up for this one......

peter

I'm sure that's a fact. This is the box that matters most. Where was the chat text you found from?

I was going to post the link but if weren't a genesis forum member you wouldn't see it, so have cut/paste it in, here you go:

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:01:21 PM)
Okay, we are now in moderated mode

banksian733 (Nov 5, 2008 2:03:23 PM)
Nick, what kind of modifications have you done on A Curious Feeling, and how much of a change will it be from the original? Will it be released in North America? Will there be a DVD included? Will there be bonus footage?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:03:23 PM)
We have made it sound a lot better. The drums are a lot stronger. Tony is really happy with it and they are working on a way to get it to you guys.

Maria the Moderator (Nov 5, 2008 2:03:28 PM)
Can you get that I'm stalling in order to allow Nick to type his answers in :)

kazzlmike (Nov 5, 2008 2:03:48 PM)
I'm scared too!!

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:03:49 PM)
Deep breaths... Just ask good questions, keep them focused... :)

lotusn (Nov 5, 2008 2:04:04 PM)
Hi Nick, Have you been asked to start working on the live albums? Will the Live box be yellow?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:04:04 PM)
I have been involved in getting this together- so it is now looking more hopeful. Asked to prepare budgets etc. so there is a definite chance now. Don't know what colour it will be though

jaydubya (Nov 5, 2008 2:04:37 PM)
Nick, now that you've remixed all 15 studio albums, which is your favourite re-mix and why?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:04:38 PM)
I think Selling England probably. Though Trespass surprised me also

paulandcarole (Nov 5, 2008 2:05:35 PM)
Hello Nick, was your role as a producer of the Boxes the same as for instance John Burns for Lamb or David Hentschel for Wind ?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:05:36 PM)
No - they were the producers making the album with all the artistic decisions that involves- I was much more just a 'sound man' on the box set stuff

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:06:00 PM)
Keep those questions coming, folks... :)

laura (Nov 5, 2008 2:07:41 PM)
I don't have any specific question for you Nick, but I would just like to thank you for the terrific job that you do. I do have two questions from other forum members: Q. from gabacabriel: How do you feel about, and would you like to respond to, concerns raised on audiophile forums about the amount of compression applied and other choices made by you in the mastering of the first two Genesis box sets? Q. from supperclub: Any word on new studio material from Genesis?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:07:41 PM)
The mastering is good in my opinion.

fractical (Nov 5, 2008 2:08:38 PM)
Mr. Davis, is there any Genesis News along the lines of new Genesis Music (Phil, Mike and Tony)?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:08:39 PM)
Not that I know of. I know Mike is keen to do some writing again (not necessarily with Genesis) and get his creative juices going again

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:09:00 PM)
Cool to hear about Mike wanting to work... :)

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:09:15 PM)
Another straight solo album from him could be interesting

wotchaofsykes (Nov 5, 2008 2:09:51 PM)
Hi Nick. How is the board tapes project coming along and are there plans to remix the live albums and maybe release them with bonus content?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:09:51 PM)
I am not involved with the board tapes project. It seems to me that it takes one step forward and then another back. Some moments I think its all about to happen, and then it stops- I don't know why. I guess other things overtake it

bender (Nov 5, 2008 2:10:33 PM)
There's an echo in here!

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:10:34 PM)
Did you hear that? ;)

mbpress01 (Nov 5, 2008 2:11:02 PM)
Is there any way on the future DVDs to get different angles of the stage – i.e. to see Phil playing drums for the whole time

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:11:02 PM)
This would be down to available footage- so I doubt it. I do think it would be interesting to have a whole concert with a stage shot so you can watch the show. I am always disappointed how much these directors cut the footage

irvingirving (Nov 5, 2008 2:12:07 PM)
Did you come across any unexpected tracks or takes while sifting through all the multi-track tapes? (like the flute in Happy the Man, for example)

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:12:07 PM)
Not really- there wasn't much 'space' available on tapes those days- so stuff wasn't left 'lying around'

bender (Nov 5, 2008 2:12:49 PM)
Nick, why is there a 'restricted hours' notice on the fence at Fisher Lane Farm?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:12:49 PM)
I think this is to do with the fact that they are thinking of renting out The Farm when they are not using it- must be something to do with planning

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:12:52 PM)
The bonus material is always welcome... The surprises in the mix

capsid (Nov 5, 2008 2:13:05 PM)
Will ACF be in both SACD and DVD-A formats?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:13:06 PM)
No- just CD and DVD (V)

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:13:49 PM)
Still, that will be an improvement over the present CD...

Was the Lamb album hard to do? < P> nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:13:50 PM)
It took the longest by far. Mainly because it was the first one we did. I can't listen to it anymore!

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:14:12 PM)
Tired of the Lamb? Say it ain't so? ;)

neil67 (Nov 5, 2008 2:14:24 PM)
Nick, I'm afraid I don't have a 5.1 system. Should I expect an enhanced listening experience when listening to the new boxed set CD's as compared to the "definitive edition" remasters? Thanks a lot.

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:14:24 PM)
I would think so, though it is worth taking it to someone’s house who has 5.1 just to hear some of the great moments

icelimbo (Nov 5, 2008 2:15:45 PM)
Hi Nick! Thanks for taking the time today. I was wondering what sorts of instructions the boys gave you on this third box set in terms of balance, using surround features, beefing up certain sounds or instruments, etc. Most especially I'm wondering if Peter had any specific things he wanted/didn't want.

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:15:45 PM)
They don't really give me any specific instructions. Peter wanted a bit more 'surround' after the first Lamb listen. It was tame by comparison to what we were doing after, and so it got made a bit more surround. Apart from that I just did what I wanted

foxtwin (Nov 5, 2008 2:16:17 PM)
What was the most challenging part of remixing Supper's Ready?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:16:17 PM)
Getting all the delays and effects right

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:16:57 PM)
And there certainly are a lot of them in that song...

paulandcarole (Nov 5, 2008 2:17:08 PM)
Are there replaced tracks on the remixes, some voice tracks seem new to me? Very surprising and much more accurate

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:17:08 PM)
No new tracks at all.

fractical (Nov 5, 2008 2:18:06 PM)
I read some opinions about the remixes and compression. My thoughts were 'let the sound people do their job' and enjoy them.

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:18:07 PM)
I think if you change something some people will always be unhappy. We all really just tried to do our best job.

bender (Nov 5, 2008 2:18:31 PM)
Nick, Are the live tapes from Seconds Out of a good enough quality to produce a live album that sounds as good as the studio albums?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:18:32 PM)
I haven't heard them yet- but I would think they will be of good quality

bender (Nov 5, 2008 2:18:57 PM)
That's cos he's Lord Zorky!

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:18:57 PM)
Those who know me, love me... :)

dom1 (Nov 5, 2008 2:19:18 PM)
Hi Nick! What was it like working with genesis the first time

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:19:18 PM)
I was scared as hell. Phil was the biggest star on the planet and this was only the 3rd album I had ever produced in my life. After 2 days it was just great, and we all got on really well

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:19:36 PM)
i wouldn't have a clue!

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:20:11 PM)
Keep those questions coming, there are a lot of good ones out there...

foxtwin (Nov 5, 2008 2:20:38 PM)
Were the masters of "Say It's Alright Joe" ever found?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:20:39 PM)
Nope- out of the whole catalogue this was the only missing track. It's probably on some secretary’s desk somewhere!! We also missed a few effects- like the bits in The Knife and some bits in Supper’s Ready- but managed to recreate most of them

feedingthefire (Nov 5, 2008 2:21:02 PM)
When mixing (stereo mix), do you mix for speaker output, and do you take headphone use into account?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:21:03 PM)
I don't use headphones- I hope it sounds all right in them

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:21:06 PM)
It's amazing that with all those songs and albums over the years, Say It's Alright Joe was the only missing song

luciusspurius (Nov 5, 2008 2:22:54 PM)
Your remixes bring out a lot of fresh detail. Is there anything you would recommend we listen out for in the new Gabriel years box set? Stuff which you hadn't noticed before?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:22:54 PM)
I think this box set is my favourite- so I can't really pick out any individual songs. I quite like the effect of the moving drum in the intro to Battle of Epping Forest. By the way the release date for the CD/DVD hasn't been moved back- it was a mistake by Amazon. The vinyl is going to be about 4 weeks delayed though

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:23:21 PM)
*drool*

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:24:32 PM)
Oh, sorry, I should keep some dignity during a web-chat...

Did you do any tuning of parts on the box set material?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:24:52 PM)
I didn't correct any pitch issues. In the 'old days' some of the analog machines didn't run at exactly the correct speed and it could cause some tuning issues. I did correct the wrong bass note on Supper’s Ready as with the sub in it just sounded so very wrong. This was a hard decision and I still waiver 50/50 over whether it was the correct thing to do

irvingirving (Nov 5, 2008 2:24:54 PM)
or the illusion of dignity, anyway

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:24:55 PM)
Sometimes, that's all we have

bender (Nov 5, 2008 2:26:03 PM)
Hi Nick, What is the future for the Farm studios?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:26:03 PM)
The band might rent it out a bit- not sure if its a great idea, but then I suppose it can't just sit there doing nothing. Obviously if we do the live albums it will get a lot more use again

feedingthefire (Nov 5, 2008 2:26:28 PM)
Who is "Charity Balls" about, if anyone?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:26:28 PM)
No-one in particular as far as I am aware

foxtwin (Nov 5, 2008 2:26:46 PM)
What kind of feedback did Peter Gabriel give you on the box set 3?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:26:47 PM)
Very happy- it wouldn't get released if they weren't all happy with it

paulandcarole (Nov 5, 2008 2:27:26 PM)
Nick, who provided the bonus material on the boxes ?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:27:27 PM)
I don't know. I think Virgin Records did some hunting around and I think there was some help from website members this time

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:27:48 PM)
We'll see if we can find out that detailed information, with time...

whitefang (Nov 5, 2008 2:28:33 PM)
Nick, I'm impressed with the extra clarity you've managed to restore from the Phil and Ray era Genesis albums, and from hearing Musical Box and Cinema Show from the "green" box set, I'm drooling with anticipation for the forthcoming work. Difficult question here, but how much of the finished product is your own skilled ear, and how much did Mike and Tony influence what we hear as the end product? - Hogweed AKA Whitefang

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:28:33 PM)
It’s basically my work- but with Tony coming in to check everything and make sure I haven't got something wrong.

Maria the Moderator (Nov 5, 2008 2:28:38 PM)
Just to refresh, if you have just joined, please do ask your questions - we see everything that is submitted

paulandcarole (Nov 5, 2008 2:29:26 PM)
Nick, what is your favourite producer?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:29:26 PM)
I guess you mean who? I like Mitchell Froomes work with Crowded House.

laura (Nov 5, 2008 2:30:21 PM)
Nick, of studio albums in the boxsets that you've remastered, which would you say was the most challenging and why?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:30:21 PM)
I didn't really enjoy remixing my own stuff- it is much easier working on someone else’s material.

rael_thing (Nov 5, 2008 2:30:55 PM)
Will there be any bonus stuff on ACF?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:30:55 PM)
I think Tony may do a bit of an interview about the album and its making- and there are the 5.1 mixes.

yoghurt (Nov 5, 2008 2:31:36 PM)
Nick is there any chance to see released all the solo stuff from Tony, Mike and Phil in 5.1 mix?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:31:36 PM)
I think Tony is really into it. Not sure about Phil and Mike. So maybe not the most commercial order things need to be

gbh01 (Nov 5, 2008 2:32:21 PM)
Nick, when you say ACF is CD, surely you mean a Hybrid SACD like the box sets.

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:32:21 PM)
No- we don't think it will be SACD as it’s too expensive to make. And Tony doesn't expect to sell millions of these

capsid (Nov 5, 2008 2:32:59 PM)
For future work would you prefer to work in 5.1 format by default or does stereo still have its place?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:33:00 PM)
Stereo is by far the most important format, but I really like 5.1, and it suits Genesis music perfectly

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:33:24 PM)
It's good that we'll get the surround mix on the DVD-V disc...

bender (Nov 5, 2008 2:33:39 PM)
I'll be buying ACF for the third time!

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:33:39 PM)
It'll be well worth it, I'm sure... :)

paulandcarole (Nov 5, 2008 2:33:52 PM)
What did Peter Gabriel on the Mixes, did he leave instructions or did he work on them?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:33:52 PM)
He came to the studio and we talked about stuff. After that I would just send him the finished material and he was happy

perrychicago (Nov 5, 2008 2:34:46 PM)
I'm suspecting one of the great 5.1 moments has to be "The Waiting Room?"

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:34:46 PM)
It’s not my favourite to be honest. There are more exciting bits- Fly on a Windshield or Back in N.Y.C. Also Chamber of 32 Doors was good

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:35:16 PM)
Once the box is out, I am sure Nick's area of the forum will be a busy place!

fractical (Nov 5, 2008 2:35:17 PM)
Nick, I am in Canada. Is it possible to get Box Sets that have SACD's and DVD's for North America?

nick
I think Japan have SACD and NTSC DVD as the release format- which is perfect for North America

Maria the Moderator (Nov 5, 2008 2:35:17 PM)
I'll check on that with Rhino, they are releasing the set in NA

irvingirving (Nov 5, 2008 2:35:27 PM)
How did you find the challenge of taking recordings made in the 70s and running them through modern gear? How did you manage to keep that original analog flavor?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:35:27 PM)
I wasn't using any modern processing (i.e. plug-ins) so I was using analog equipment

fractical (Nov 5, 2008 2:36:11 PM)
Nick, how did it come about that you were the chosen one, to do work for Genesis recordings?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:36:11 PM)
Mike heard an 'It Bites' track that I had engineered and he liked it. I was asked to do The Living Years album- the rest is, as they say, history!

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:36:38 PM)
Keep the questions coming... :)

melodyof1974 (Nov 5, 2008 2:36:41 PM)
Thank you Nick for being here! Were you personally familiar with the earlier stuff or later stuff and how did that compare when mixing all the different box sets?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:36:41 PM)
I bought Selling England by the Pound in my teens

foxtwin (Nov 5, 2008 2:37:02 PM)
Why were so many b-sides from Calling All Stations not included in the 83-98 box set?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:37:02 PM)
It was felt it would make the disk un-balanced.

uk76 (Nov 5, 2008 2:37:26 PM)
Do you know of any plans to re-release the 3SL and/or Mama Tour videos on DVD?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:37:26 PM)
I think there is a possibility of this happening

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:37:38 PM)
And there was much salivating.... :)

mat_c (Nov 5, 2008 2:38:32 PM)
Can Nick fill us in on what the Genesis boys have been up to since the tour finished

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:38:32 PM)
Tony has been gardening and playing golf. Mike has been writing a bit and getting his home studio up and running again. Not sure about Phil- I think he is just taking some time off

kamokaziuk (Nov 5, 2008 2:39:03 PM)
You mixed Ray Wilson's _cut album Millionairhead, was he any different to work with compared to when he was with Genesis than to his own album?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:39:04 PM)
Obviously he was more in control. It was fine to do

What tracks are you most proud of on the boxsets, and what would you like to redo.

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:40:46 PM)
I'm proud of most of it to be honest. I could always redo them with the benefit of hindsight

bender (Nov 5, 2008 2:41:28 PM)
Nick, isn't it about time the guys got a new chair for you in the studio? What is it with these guys and seats?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:41:28 PM)
I got a new chair- but I don't like it. Much prefer the old ones! Got history

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:42:05 PM)
The old chairs are more... worn in... :)

banksian733 (Nov 5, 2008 2:42:13 PM)
On ACF, what parts of the songs did you bring out more? What kind of effects did you use on the songs?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:42:13 PM)
The drums are much better now. It sounds the same but better

marcialrael (Nov 5, 2008 2:42:33 PM)
Hi Nick, what did Brian Eno exactly do on the lamb?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:42:33 PM)
A couple of vocal effects on Grand Parade as far as I can tell

foxtwin (Nov 5, 2008 2:42:45 PM)
What advice would you give to someone who wants to have a career like yours?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:42:45 PM)
Start 20 years ago

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:42:53 PM)
The Legendary Enossification....

melodyof1974 (Nov 5, 2008 2:42:59 PM)
You mentioned missing bits from The Knife, does that include Ant or Mike's line "Things Are Getting Out Of Control here Jack!"

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:43:00 PM)
I think that was it

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:43:19 PM)
It doesn't exist

paulandcarole (Nov 5, 2008 2:43:32 PM)
What monitors did you use for the remix work ?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:43:32 PM)
Proac studio 100's

Question about who listens the most to the remixes missing

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:43:57 PM)
Definitely Tony. He does most of the band work in this area

lotusn (Nov 5, 2008 2:44:33 PM)
Are Phil and the others as nice and down to earth as they seem?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:44:33 PM)
They really are the nicest people- far too nice to be 'stars'

whitefang (Nov 5, 2008 2:44:49 PM)
Nick, my forum name is Hogweed, I love the song, it encapsulates everything I love about the early Genesis era. Tell me you've made a bloody good job of it and make an old pelican happy :)

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:44:49 PM)
You will love it!

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:45:10 PM)
Hogweed now breathes easier...

feedingthefire (Nov 5, 2008 2:45:42 PM)
Remind me, DTS or Dolby Digital, which is the best listening experience, and why?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:45:42 PM)
DTS. Dolby Digital can be good for music but only if you can turn the compressor off

bender (Nov 5, 2008 2:46:09 PM)
Any clues from Peter if he was any nearer to thinking about a re-union?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:46:09 PM)
I think they still think about it- but its all down to inclination and timing

david_v (Nov 5, 2008 2:46:25 PM)
Will you be involved at all with the Genesis-music demo CD? If so what stage is that in?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:46:26 PM)
I know nothing about this one

aquiel (Nov 5, 2008 2:46:38 PM)
Hi Nick, any idea why none of the Lamb video footage that’s available was used? thanks

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:46:38 PM)
No- don't do extras stuff

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:47:05 PM)
is it half yamaha and half gibson? not sure

bender (Nov 5, 2008 2:47:15 PM)
Nick - will you ask Mike if he will appear as the guest on 'Top Gear' and ask Tony to let Gardener's World have a poke round his garden please? I'd love to see both!

Maria the Moderator (Nov 5, 2008 2:47:15 PM)
Top Gear is my new favorite show. I'd love to see any of the Genesis gang on the show

gazarama (Nov 5, 2008 2:47:53 PM)
Had you not been approached to produce We Can't Dance and hence pretty much have a full time job with the band, where do you think your career would have gone? Would you still be producing?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:47:53 PM)
Interesting- I don't know. It’s one of those life changing moments. Maybe a gigolo

Missing question

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:48:23 PM)
Not that I know of

paulandcarole (Nov 5, 2008 2:49:18 PM)
Nick, what were Tony Banks’ likes and dislikes on the remix work ?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:49:18 PM)
I think he was aware of some dodgy lyrics, and also some bad endings to good tracks

yoghurt (Nov 5, 2008 2:49:24 PM)
No unreleased track from ACF?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:49:24 PM)
No

unclejimmy (Nov 5, 2008 2:49:59 PM)
Nick, what were the high pitched voices on Supper’s Ready (fly away you sweet little thing...) Was it Phil or Peter’s voices sped up?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:50:00 PM)
Yes- sped up vocals- Pete I think

sadsonco (Nov 5, 2008 2:50:51 PM)
Hi Nick - I was wondering, on the Hugh Padgham material, how much of the effects work was printed to tape, and how much did you have to re-create or interpret?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:50:51 PM)
I had to recreate most of it.

Missing question

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:51:05 PM)
In Japan I think

capsid (Nov 5, 2008 2:51:41 PM)
How does 5.1 suit Genesis music exactly?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:51:41 PM)
It’s 'cinematic' and spacious. Gives a chance to be spread around the sound-field

capsid (Nov 5, 2008 2:53:08 PM)
How do you relax outside of the studio?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:53:08 PM)
I play squash, and I love cricket- I play a bit and I run a village team. Walking the dog and family. I have 3 children so not too much time to relax

slipperman88 (Nov 5, 2008 2:53:22 PM)
Nick, which sounds do you prefer from the albums the 'old' synths, or new?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:53:22 PM)
Old

greekhogweed (Nov 5, 2008 2:53:39 PM)
Nick, were the two previous box sets as commercially successful as was anticipated?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:53:39 PM)
I think this one has nearly sold as much as the first 2 put together

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:53:50 PM)
Wow!

greekhogweed (Nov 5, 2008 2:54:27 PM)
It's not even out yet

Maria the Moderator (Nov 5, 2008 2:54:27 PM)
Presales!

greekhogweed (Nov 5, 2008 2:54:32 PM)
It's not even out yet

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:54:33 PM)
Pre-orders?

Maria the Moderator (Nov 5, 2008 2:54:39 PM)
Jinx

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:54:40 PM)
Jinx!

duke77 (Nov 5, 2008 2:54:48 PM)
I heard Ray met the band on the 07 tour in Hannover - how was the climate? Do they get on well?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:54:48 PM)
It was really nice- and good for everyone. They all got on really well. I think Ray had a tough time after calling all stations, it was very hard on him

lotusn (Nov 5, 2008 2:55:19 PM)
Have you heard any test pressings of the new vinyl? If so which improved the most, the CD or the vinyl?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:55:19 PM)
I have heard them- they sound really good

Maria the Moderator (Nov 5, 2008 2:55:52 PM)
We're reaching the hour mark, and with three kids probably pulling on Nick, I think we should start to wrap up?

Question about Steve’s thoughts on the Remixes missing

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:56:47 PM)
He listened to everything he played on- and then called me with comments. I had to do a couple of tweaks for him, but generally he was very happy. He rang me at home and said he was really pleased with what we had done

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:57:02 PM)
Good to know that Steve is happy!

paulandcarole (Nov 5, 2008 2:58:08 PM)
On Selling, is it true that John Burns had to sacrifice dynamics to be able to fill the whole B side of the album ? If so, does that mean that there are more dynamics now ?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:58:08 PM)
It would have been a cutting issue. They would have had to remove bass from that side of the vinyl and also cut it quieter to fit it all on. Even now on the new cuts it is not as loud as the other side

_666_ (Nov 5, 2008 2:58:55 PM)
Nick, we don't get any interviews with yourself on the boxsets. A shame, really because I feel you'd have the biggest participating part of the boxsets!!

nick (Nov 5, 2008 2:58:55 PM)
It was going to happen at one point, but then never did. A lot of people have said I should have done it - but there you go

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 2:59:08 PM)
We can interview you here... :)

fractical (Nov 5, 2008 3:00:10 PM)
Nick, do you keep any "remixes" for yourself? I mean, after all, you are only human!

nick (Nov 5, 2008 3:00:10 PM)
No- don't need anymore Genesis!

fractical (Nov 5, 2008 3:00:50 PM)
Nick, what is your opinion of the Pink Floyd SACD (Dark Side of the Moon) ? Do you feel you are doing a better job with Genesis SACD's than Pink Floyds?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 3:00:50 PM)
It’s great- I can't tell

paulandcarole (Nov 5, 2008 3:01:33 PM)
We were at Bruxelles and Bern gigs, and it seemed to me Tony's keys were far down the mix. But on When in Rome, they come much brighter through, were there some re takes or re mixes on Tony's keys ?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 3:01:33 PM)
No- no retakes. All as was- apart from the fix in Firth

duchess1981 (Nov 5, 2008 3:02:06 PM)
Sorry if this has already been asked, I just got in from classes and missed half the chat...I was just curious, do you do any production work nowadays for anyone besides those in the Genesis camp?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 3:02:06 PM)
I did some work on a new French artist in June

david_v (Nov 5, 2008 3:02:19 PM)
Do you have a private Genesis gems on your MP3 player?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 3:02:19 PM)
I don't have an mp3 player!

feedingthefire (Nov 5, 2008 3:02:54 PM)
I find it hard to get the balance/levels right on 5.1, do you have any advice?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 3:02:54 PM)
I would have the 5 speakers at the same volume and then add sub to taste

Maria the Moderator (Nov 5, 2008 3:03:00 PM)
I'm passing around a collection plate for a Christmas gift for Nick. Guess what it will be.

capsid (Nov 5, 2008 3:03:12 PM)
Would you prefer that the listener does not apply a sound effect to the sound field? My amp can apply cinema studio effects which give a spacious sound and certainly improves my listening pleasure for films.

nick (Nov 5, 2008 3:03:12 PM)
I wouldn't do it for music

grestch (Nov 5, 2008 3:03:31 PM)
What is your favorite part of your job?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 3:03:31 PM)
The music- and the experience of making it

bender (Nov 5, 2008 3:04:11 PM)
Nick, what sort of stuff do you listen to away from the studio?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 3:04:11 PM)
What my children are listening to, the Beatles, classical, anything really

duke77 (Nov 5, 2008 3:04:32 PM)
Would you like to do some 5.1 mixing of Steve's Albums?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 3:04:32 PM)
I don't know his solo work

_666_ (Nov 5, 2008 3:04:55 PM)
Nick, any album (not by Genesis) that you'd like to remix?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 3:04:55 PM)
Thriller

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 3:05:41 PM)
Now I have the riff from "Beat It" going through my head....

holquist (Nov 5, 2008 3:06:07 PM)
Did you follow the American presidential election?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 3:06:07 PM)
Yes- I am very pleased Barack Obama won. I think it gives the whole world a chance to cheer up. I probably shouldn't do politics on here though

Mike Lord - Zorky (Nov 5, 2008 3:06:16 PM)
Ha!

Maria the Moderator (Nov 5, 2008 3:06:32 PM)
Or the Weird Al version "Eat It"

wickman (Nov 5, 2008 3:07:06 PM)
I like that one better. LOL.

Maria the Moderator (Nov 5, 2008 3:07:06 PM)
See? Wick's with me.

feedingthefire (Nov 5, 2008 3:07:39 PM)
Is it true about Tony's camper van holidays, or is it an urban legend?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 3:07:40 PM)
True

marcialrael (Nov 5, 2008 3:08:09 PM)
Any chances to do the other albums on vinyl??

nick (Nov 5, 2008 3:08:09 PM)
I don't think so

bender (Nov 5, 2008 3:08:14 PM)
Does Tony still have his Saab? (great taste in cars)

nick (Nov 5, 2008 3:08:14 PM)
No

capsid (Nov 5, 2008 3:08:30 PM)
Fancy a friendly game of cricket against our work team? We're old and not very good.

nick (Nov 5, 2008 3:08:30 PM)
Sounds perfect for us

kazzlmike (Nov 5, 2008 3:08:45 PM)
Is Mike still playing polo?

nick (Nov 5, 2008 3:08:46 PM)
No

Maria the Moderator (Nov 5, 2008 3:09:08 PM)
Hey everyone, we're going to end now. Thanks to everyone for the very great (and very specific!) questions. We'll get the transcript up as soon as we can

Maria the Moderator (Nov 5, 2008 3:09:45 PM)

ALL MUSIC REVIEW: 5/5

The last of the three matching box sets of Genesis' back catalog Genesis 1970-1975 offers expanded reissues of every Peter Gabriel era album outside of the earliest, From Genesis to Revelation, which has essentially been reduced to a footnote to their catalog (as much due to licensing reasons as musical). So, 1970-1975 offers remastered reissues of 1970's Trespass, 1971's Nursery Cryme, 1972's Foxtrot, 1973's Selling England by the Pound, and 1974's double-album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, each presented as a double-disc set containing a remastered CD and DVD-Audio with 5.1 surround sound (in the U.K., these were released as hybrid SACDs instead of standard CDs). All the remastering is exceptional but what makes this set necessary for the devoted is the bonus material — the video added to the DVDs and the whole disc of stray tracks. This supplemental disc has the exceptional B-side "Twilight Alehouse," the single-only "Happy the Man," the demo of the terrific "Going Out to Get You," and the BBC session that produced "Shepherd," "Pacidy," and "Let Us Now Make Love" — all tracks that showed up on the 1998 box set Genesis Archives, Vol. 1: 1967-1975, but the real treat is the first official release of the four songs that comprise Genesis Plays Jackson, the band's soundtrack to a show by artist Michael Jackson. Add to this the video material — limited to interviews on Trespass and Nursery Cryme, but containing full performances on Foxtrot and Selling England, plus the original slide shows used for the stage show of Lamb — and this box turns into something extraordinary: a nearly complete portrait of a restlessly creative band at their peak, whose output only sounds more distinctive with each passing year.

The Amazon.com item for $94.49 has to be the CD + DVD version, according to the US website info.

Hmmm...I think you are right :(, but I checked my order and I originally ordered the SACD box, which they are now no longer offering. I will have to see what arrives. That will be very painful if it is the DTS set and I have to decide whether to re-order somewhere else.

Thanks for pointing it out.

Hey guys,

Have received the boxset today. At work just now but will post some impressions later on. Have listened briefly to 'Supper's Ready' and it sounds incredible!
