My wife and I just watched this. It was pretty enjoyable, lots of Steely Dan, Micheal McDonald, Christopher Cross, Toto, that kind of stuff. It told the tale quite well and brought back some memories. Well worth watching if you have access to MAX.

However, the highlight for me was when they started a video section showing many of the albums jackets from that era that qualified (to them) as "Yacht Rock". Of course I noticed the CD-4 QUADRADISC logo on the "Unborn Child" LP (sadly, a cut-out with a drill hole through the word QUADRADISC), but a Quadradisc none the less. Very cool! :phones

I read about this elsewhere a couple of days ago & was definitely intrigued . Good call & sharp eye for Quadradisc Seals & Crofts. I don't have the MAX but there's other ways to watch. I will check this out.

I caught Yacht Rock on HBO. I enjoyed the "Dock"umentary and the various interviews with most of the artists who are identifed with this style of music.

Interviewer: ā€œSo would you like to comment on your genre of music?ā€

Donald Fagan: ā€œAnd what genre is that?ā€

Interviewer: ā€œUmm, Yacht Rockā€

Donald Fagan: ā€œGo F*ck yourselfā€
(click)

Interviewer: ā€œI think Donald Fagan just hung up on meā€

A totally different genre, but PBS recently aired a fantastic 3 part series called Disco: Soundtrack of a Revolution. (I think it originally came out last year.) There was stuff in there that shocked me. I love learning new background stuff about music. I'll definitely check out this yacht rock documentary!

This seems like a good Doc that I will watch.

One that I am watching now, that I really like is Nothin But A Good Time: The Uncensored Story of 80's Hair Metal.
I am watching for free via my Amazon Prime account or Paramount+.

Saw the Quadradisc logo on the Seals & Crofts jacket, jumped up, pointed to the TV and shouted to my wife "Look honey, that's the quad version!!!!"
She said calmly, "So can I have more wine?"

After all these years, she's well aware of my 'attention to detail' when it comes to quad commercial releases. I dragged her to every Woolco, Zayre's, every salvage store in the late '70s/early '80s scouring the huge racks of cutout 8 tracks and albums looking for quad stuff (which more often than not resulted in only finding 50 copies of E. Power Biggs Q8's!).

But after watching that Dock-umentary, I've had tunes from "Minute By Minute" and "Christopher Cross" running through my aging brain and was thinking that those two albums would make GREAT Rhino Dolby Atmos BluRay's!

How about it Steve? I know you'd love it too! :hi

Nice, sounds like an enjoyable watch... ā›µļø

The Christopher Cross S/T has had a fake Dolby Atmos upmix released on the streamers. It's just reverb of the stereo mix in the other channels and an Atmos logo slapped on it. Such a waste. Not sure where the call came from but a whole bunch of the WEA catalogue was done this way. There's even a couple of Smiths songs so I doubt the artists were that involved! Hopefully this will get corrected with a proper Atmos release, although I'd prefer Minute By Minute first! :)

I just watched this and I highly recommend it. Learned a lot of things I didn't know, like how the genre came to be in the first place (after the fact). Good to see people like Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins having a sense of humor about the whole scene. Very interesting segments on Steely Dan, Doobies, Toto featured prominently. Christopher Cross was particularly entertaining (who knew he subbed for Richie Blackmore in Deep Purple for one show?). Very well produced too. Well worth the hour and a half.

I've only had a chance to watch about the first half of this; and they seem to credit Steely Dan as being the igniting force behind the whole genre. However, not sure how I feel about Steely Dan being the 'paterfamilias' of "Yacht Rock"

Hopefully no one hear spoils the ending for you but you should watch the rest. I will say no more.

From a little more localized band aspect, here in the Central part of California, a long standing force of Yacht Rock is this band-

don't know if they're mentioned in this Doc.; but here's a sample...

Pablo Cruise is one of those forgotten bands of the 70s, but they were very popular here in California and the San Francisco Bay Area. My friend had one of their early albums on cassette in the mid-lateā€™70s. We used to drive around stoned in his 1968 green GTO, and looked for girls to hang out with, and scenic locations, with a view of Diablo Valley. All the while, playing cat and mouse with the local police, who mostly left us alone. There were simply too many of us guys and gals all doing the same thing. ā€œDonā€™t Believe itā€ was sort of a hit here. And other Artists covered the song.

Anyway, this record began a string of hits for the group. I have fond memories of real nice, comfortable California spring weather when I first heard this:
