This release consists of 3 CDs and 1 Blu-ray Disc, which includes 20 newly created 5.1 surround sound mixes of the entire First Rays Of The New Rising Sun album plus three bonus tracks [“Valleys Of Neptune,” “Pali Gap,” and “Lover Man”]. The Blu-ray includes the critically acclaimed, full-length documentary Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision. The film chronicles the creation of the studio, rising from the rubble of a bankrupt Manhattan nightclub to state-of-the-art recording facility inspired by Hendrix’s desire for a permanent studio. Directed by John McDermott and Produced by Janie Hendrix, George Scott and McDermott, the film features exclusive interviews with Steve Winwood [who joined Hendrix on the first night of recording at the new studio], Experience bassist Billy Cox, and original Electric Lady staff members who helped Hendrix realize his dream. The documentary includes never-before-seen footage and photos as well as track breakdowns of Hendrix classics such as “Freedom,” “Angel” and “Dolly Dagger” by recording engineer Eddie Kramer.

The surround mix immersive-ness is all over the map. Some tracks are well done and enjoyable, some have little going on for the entirety, some have splashes of surround but otherwise not much going on. This is obviously a direct result of the number of discrete tracks available to the surround engineers. Overall this is more enjoyable than the 6 I give it, but being objectively honest -- the surround presentation isn't the primary reason to buy it, and this is after all a surround forum and surround poll.

I've been listening to Jimi for 50 years now and I'm completely enjoying this box set! The 3 cds sound incredible and the various tracks and versions of them are just fantastic. I love hearing the 5.1 versions of the Valleys of Neptune audio tracks. I'm not an audio engineer, so I don't have the critical expertise to disect what Eddie Kramer has done, but from an avid lover of sound and music, I'm completely impressed! Thank you for this opportunity to hear this music in such a cool way! The documentary is really very interesting and I couldn't stop thinking what could have been if Jimi hadn't so needlesly passed at such a young age. It makes my appreciation of his artistry and talents that much greater. I'm listening on a system comprised of Audio Monitor Silver 100 7gs and the AM matching center with some older Polk F/X surrounds I got about 25 years ago. This is driven by a Yamaha TSR-700. My only gripe is with the packaging. The Electric Ladyland packaging was far superior. I do like the track by track descriptions in the booklet. So, it is about the music and I voted a 9 on the 5.1. The CDs would get a 10 and the packaging a 7, and so a 9 overall for the set.
