as part of my ongoing mid-life mental meltdown i'm joining Hugo in Wonderland and going down the Linear Tracking CD-4 rabbit hole with a Technics SL-10 (that's still got its EPS-310MC cart, looks in good shape; hollow Boron cantilever, ultra low mass, frequency range extends to 60kHz supposedly and all that old bollocks...) and an Ortofon MCA-76.

is there any point wishing me luck as i enter into the abyss..!? we both know it'll all end in tears!! πŸ˜…πŸ€£

I hope your seedy4 affliction stays under control  I still have my SL-10 & cartridge which unfortunately has its Linear Tracking stuck, I haven't taken it apart as I am a mechanical butcher and it would never be the same! It's probably a good job I didn't know it was good for CD4 or I would have vanished down that rabbit hole as well :ROFLMAO:

ooohh!! lovely!! πŸ₯° even though your deck may not be fully operational right now (i know how it feels πŸ˜… ) you must treasure it like an LP-sized jewel!! πŸ’ŽπŸ€© one day it may get lubed up and ready for a thorough play!! (so i keep telling myself!).. 🀣🀣

(ps. i'm not sure anybody ever said its suitable for seedy-four..? knowing my luck it probably isn't! πŸ₯΄πŸ™„πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚

Yep, I can't get rid of it, it now sits (unoiled) on top of the retired and knackered Rega Planar 3, as I now have a SL1210GR.

Since a nearby lightning strike took out my Marantz AV7703 pre/pro, I just purchased a new Denon AVR X4700H receiver to replace it.. It will be used in it's preamp out only configuration to drive my stack of vintage Adcom power amps. One of the best measuring surround components on the market, it sounds amazing and was a lot cheaper than another Marantz pre/pro. I need to get some new pictures up soon after I get the room put back together. What a huge chore switching out a full 5.2.4 Atmos rig. :(

ooohhhh
I think I am going to have to be ALONE IN MY ROOM for a while now and get some KLEENEX, HAHAHAHA!!!! Love this Linear TT PORN!!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY FREDDIE BABYYYY!!! You are a young 'un!

BTW, a quick word of warning. Be sure you have the best lightning surge protection you can get. I few hundred spent there can save you thousands on replacing blown up gear.
Very good words of wisdom, learned the hard way. May I ask how your PC, network stuff held up? Or did only the Marantz bite the dust?

Fredblue, you are going to LOVE that turntable. I think its way better than zillions of them that cost a bigga fortuna more.
And the moving coil cartridge has one of the lowest effective tip masses around. It also has a matching (the cartridge) built in pre preamp so you don't need to use the Ortofon MCA 76. (I once had an ortofon pre pre but it got away from me. I tried it out with the SL10 but could not discern any difference. I don't remember the model number. It had lots and lots of paralleled transistors on the input.)

I don't know anything about CD4. But when I read discussion about it here I always wondered whether a linear tracker would be the way to go. Since I see descriptions that certain cartridges work on the outer part of the record but not the inner. Sounds tailor made for an LT. Even if it is not up to the task (I would bet it will be) your regular records will sound great with it. The only weak point is if a record has a skip you have to cue the arm to go over it. But it won't put any new skips on for you.

Duncan there are lots of videos on yoohootooob showing how to lube an SL10. It is not difficult. One thing that I would do (and I am going to have to lube mine pretty soon) is I would make a sketch/map of where the numerous small screws go in a piece of cardboard and punch appropriately sized hole to make sure each screw goes back exactly where it came out of. Use a teflon based lubricant. Lubricate and keep (ie. don't remove as some audiophiles advocate) the record clamp gadget.

Great luck and let us know how it all turns out.

Awesome advice..and I totally agree with the SL-10 being a state of the art TT, even for today's standards..
Regarding skips, I had this happen to me the other day with an SQ LP that was in "GOOD"(?) condition; I mean , ALL kinds of scratches everywhere and there was one specifically at the end of the side which I had not seen...my method is quite "dirty"/Low Blow but what I do is use my FINGERNAIL and scratch it back and forth until either the nail residue fills the space and/or the nail itself flattens the skip...and voilΓ‘! It worked quite well...
I have yet to find an "unplayable" scratch that my SL-QL1 can't handle cause I think that it having only a meager 1.5 grams of pressure and its advanced tracking mechanism make it almost impossible to skip like with a pivot arm TT...but then, having said this, I am sure I will find an LP with an UNPLAYABLE scratch (cause I am ASKING FOR IT, HAHAHAH!)--

Happy LT TT adventures my friends!

Excellent input and advice from gene_stl. I've got an SL15 and have disassembled it a couple of times to replace the belt and lube everything up. The youtube videos are all really good and fairly easy to follow. It probably took 1 - 2 hours to do the entire job.

I did exactly what gene_stl recommended regarding the tiny screws....made a little map on a sheet of paper, then laid each screw in it's designated space to make sure they went back where they came from.

Best of luck and happy b'day!

🀯 ... Hold up your line dancing 🎠 πŸ₯Ώ πŸ₯Ώ πŸ₯ΏπŸ₯ΏFreddie!

I thought your B-day was ...........earlier🀨🧐 !

Happy belatedπŸ₯³ :hi:QQlove:phones:bowing: and really excited to hear what you do with that new gear.

thank you everyone for your beautiful Bday wishes and all-round wondrous fabulousness! πŸ₯³πŸŽ‰πŸ€—
and of course on top of all the usual matey chummy yummy avuncular-ness-ness-ity we're so used to round here, i appreciate all and any advice you can give on Linear TTs πŸ’˜ as i've never owned one before and despite this one coming in its box seemingly with all original goodies i think it musta been sat in that box for quite a while because when it gets to around 3/4-ish of the way through a disc (sounding great along the way, i might add!) it starts getting stuck in the groove playing the same bit over and over and over again and the arm cannot be advanced even when cueing and then pressing the FFWD button (its a slightly unsettling but then strangely hypnotic feeling when it just keeps repeating itself.. repeating itself.. repeating itself..! πŸ™„πŸ₯΄πŸ˜‚πŸ€€ ) ah well.. its something new for me to fiddle about with until i put my fist through it i suppose!! πŸ˜…πŸ€©

Did you have a UPS?? I am guessing you did!
UPS, I guessing your not talking about package delivery?

PC = toast, Brother laser printer = toast, 40' active HDMI cable = toast

Universal Power Supply....by your response I guess you didn't... I ALWAYS have had my precious gear connected to one..now, I don't know if a lightning bolt discharge will overpower it and I really wouldn't want to find out!

No UPS. Sadly all I had for protection was a few of those cheap $15 power strips/surge protectors, useless.. Expensive lessons learned.
