Infidels - Infidels

One off album from this Toronto area band featuring Molly Johnson, released in 1991.
100 Watt Bulb got a lot of airplay up here.
Harder edge than their previous incarnation as Alta Moda.

That Petrol Emotion - Chemicrazy

Really, really good album, every song is strong.
Need to search out more of their records.
Terrible cover, IMHO

The Heavy Jack 3 - What Is Love

2016 Indie EP from this local band (full disclosure: I work with 2 of the band members).
Hadn’t heard their music before now.
The sound is not super polished but certainly listenable and some really good and original songs.
I’m impressed.

Have slowly been picking up the original Zep Barry Diament masters on CD. So far I have I, II, III, Houses Of The Holy, Physical Graffiti, and In Through The Outdoor. Never really liked the Marino remasters and actually like quite a few of the Davis remasters, but the Diaments are my favs. When Barry was afforded the proper source tapes, he killed it.

How can you tell which is which?

The Diament masters have the plain Atlantic Records back that states “The music on this Compact Disc was originally recorded on analog equipment… because of its high resolution, however, the Compact Disc can reveal limitations of the source tape”. Diament is only mentioned on the inside flap.

The Marino remasters have the Swan Song back and state “Digitally remastered from the original master tapes by Jimmy Page and George Marino at Sterling Sound”.

The Davis remasters feature non-plastic paper based covers and are 2 or 3 disc ‘deluxe editions’. The extra discs contain decent bonus material.

To my ear:

The Diaments more closely approach the analogue warmth inherent to vinyl and capture a well defined low end. His Led Zep I is absolutely a must have.

The Marino’s remasters are thinner and harsher overall.

The Davis remasters fall something between and I actually prefer some of his work to Diament’s (Presence, for example).

YMMV but I hope this helps.

What Made Milwaukee Famous -
Trying To Never Catch Up

Second iteration of this Austin bands debut album. The first was self released, this one re-released by Barsuk Records with three tracks excised and four added.
Not clear if the eight overlapping tracks were re-recorded, doesn’t sound like it to me.
Great record from an unsung band.

Max Webster

Their self titled debut from 1976.
It’s OK, you can here a hint of what’s to come (Comin’ Off the Moon) but they’re not quite there yet.
Never heard the album before so no reference point re the sound quality.
First track is a bit grating but it gets better after that.
