I love Deep Purple. I was reading an article today that revisits this album and decided to give it a listen after a number of years.

It remains the same for me... some good songs, lots of really good guitar playing, but overall a bit weak as a full band effort.

The album always leads me back to this video from the tour and Ritchie’s final days in the band. Great show despite Ritchie famously being pre-occupied during the first song.

Any time you want! I love your list! Lots of similar things on mine.

I remember an indie store in my town around the early 90s that dealt only in import CDs. Once I saw what sort of Purple releases he could get access to (and so much more), I might as well have direct-deposited my work checks to his store.

I was most interested in the CDs from Japan. Among them I have the In Concert release and if I recall, the booklet had tablature for one song (Child in Time?) which blew me away as a budding guitarist and as someone who was used to skimpy booklets. Made me want to learn Japanese so I could read them.

While not from Japan, In The Absence of Pink - Knebworth 85 was another gem I found in his store.

Also found the CD below in his store... not a Deep Purple album, but very cool to hear a symphony do their music. (A lot of great rock albums came out on that label.)

Wish I still had my receipts from his store. I spent way more there than I should have, but the memories are great. A small store in a strip mall run by one guy who used to be in the local music scene. He had so much stuff he couldn’t display it all. Once he knew I could be trusted, he let me go behind the counter any time I wanted and go through boxes of stuff. A great place to hang out and talk music with people.

I love that we have so much easy access to music around the world today, but I do miss pre-Internet stores like his and the joy of suddenly discovering something you had no idea existed from another country. Even the long wait for a phone call from his store saying my order had come in after a month or two was exciting despite the agony of how long shipping took.

I just want to add this is a really great Who album have an old record somewhere but haven't listened in years so I upgraded to the CD with three bonus live versions.
What a shame The Who didn't record more albums during their prime.

Good to know I have the Mobile Fidelity SACD version I got a long time ago assumed it was the best. Will have to check out the DCC version sometime. It is a great album started me on my Coltrane journey.

Live at the Bottom Line - Laura Nyro
caught Nyro live on this tour, and again the following year
Jimmy Vivino was leading band both times.
Both at The Vic, Chicago, IL

A few years later, I was at the Bottom Line NYC for a Phil Ochs tribute
It was in support of the new release 2 CD "What's That I Hear" tribute album
Many of the same acts performing on stage
I sat up front next to Sonny (Sonia) Ochs, Phil's Sister!!
We had some wonderful chats in between acts.
Rhino trimmed Ochs' box set from its' originally intended 4 CD's to 3 CD's!!
No doubt to hit a $50 price point!
(wonder which tracks were left off?)

We had partied earlier that evening w/a literary club where we are members. We took over National Arts Club on Gramercy Square NYC!! Open bar & buffet! Top shelf stuff. (I've lived a very boring life lol!!)

Could we ever hope for an SACD stereo remaster?

IMO, It's a Beautiful Day and their second album Marrying Maiden would make a splendid Dutton Vocalion Stereo SACD TWO FER!

Perhaps in EU. I think that Matthew Katz (pronounced Cates) or his heirs own the rights to the artwork on the cover of 1st album. I'm not sure that Sony owns the music rights for US, though they might own the rights throughout the rest of the world. AS clear as mud!!
AFAIK, the last time this two~fer was reissued, it did come from the UK from "Import Records..." SONY isn't even mentioned! Hmmmm. Wonder if Steelydave in his conversations with Michael Dutton could further clarify?
