Three excellent Surround Sound SACD Samplers:
  • Bob Dylan - SACD Sampler (Columbia CSH 55838)
  • Elton John - Super Audio CD Sampler (Rocket CATF-05147-6)
  • Rolling Stone Magazine - RS500 Super Audio CD Sampler (Sony Music RS 500 HD)

Finding that RS500 Sampler in great condition for ok money is tough nowadays but I'll keep trying! :D

I can image. I picked it up when the RS500 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine came out.

The Elton John SACD Sampler is still out there. Sony Electronics and Acoustic Sounds gave a bunch away recently at their DSD Downloads event at RMAF in Denver.

Listening to (and also encoding to Involve IQS) the amazing DTS CD of Boyz 2 Men II - This album in surround is a jaw dropping stunner. Next will be the DTS demo with the opening Seal track - and I have an Ambisonic G-Format disc I'm gonna try.

Wow! Really!? If Sony and Acoustic Sounds are still dishing out that Elton SACD sampler now (approx 10 years later!) as representative of the kind of quality and superb surround sound the format can deliver, could they please be gorgeous wonderful darlings and be so kind as to release the remaining SACDs of Caribou, Rock Of The Westies, Blue Moves and Don't Shoot Me.. that they left on the shelf together with this old SACD compilation sampler??? Pretty Please!!! :D

Ooh! What's the ambisonic G-format disc of?

Actually what is an ambisonic G-format disc Ty?

It's the first DTS CD made to demonstrate the Coherent Acoustics codec and is of an orchestra playing and then afterwards a Q/A session - it was recorded in full Ambisonic B format (3 channel) and instead of re-encoding to 2 channel UHJ the B-Format was rematrixed into a typical 5.1 channel lay out - that's called G-Format because Ambisonic is usually adjusted for different layouts to match the speaker layout in the room. B-Format is for studio use only, C-Format is the 2 channel consumer UHJ format and G-Format is B-Format encoded to a 5.1 layout. Make sense? Ambisonics is a very complex and confusing format and except for this disc, I've never heard a good demo of it, even from its proponents. Look up Ambisonic.net and read some of the articles. According to them, we are all listening to sound wrong and only they are right.

The Boyz 2 Men II conversion from DTS to Involve IQS came out wonderfully - and it has a lot of center back info so if you can send it through an EX decoder, it sounds amazing.

BTW I've started calling the Involve encoding process IQS or the IQS Matrix, IQS standing for Involve Quintaphonic Stereo - I personally don't think Involve conveys what the format is - it's great for a company name but not a process name. I hope Charlie doesn't get pissed at me for using the name - I've also thought UQS for Universal Quintaphonic Stereo - the quad name must be avoided at all costs or industry people will leave skid marks as they run from it.

I have a LP By a group TAG
It is Electronic some people may call this music
But the point is that it is in UHJ
and there is a part in the Music? where the sound
circles around the room it is the only demo that I have heard
of this effect

Do you have an Ambisonic UHJ decoder or is it a 2 channel effect you are hearing? Back in the late 90's Onkyo came out with a receiver that had a UHJ mode, but they left out the UHJ SuperStereo mode and the "focus" (phase) adjustment, although they did have the speaker layout option. Unless you make your own finding a UHJ decoder is very, very difficult because only a few british companies made them and they didn't exactly fly off the shelves. Alan Parsons Stereotomy CD us a UHJ CD, but UHJ really doesn't perform as is always claimed. Even properly set up THJ (B-Format) doesn't sound right to me - its too phasey with very hazy localization. One of my cats has decided to half on me and half on the laptop, making typing difficult - and she moves hitting the keys and adds her own cat writing.

Hi Again Disclord

Although the term "Quintaphonic" sounds a bit 50's maybe???

Any one else have a suggestion for some snappy names? (I know this is not the right place but "what the hell!")

Regards

Chucky

Quintaphonic is very 1970's!

1975 to be precise, it's the moniker that was given to the Sansui QS encoded 5-channel mix on the theatrical release of Ken Russell's "Tommy" back in the day. Very fine mix it is too, all present and correct and restored to its former glory on the in-print UK deluxe Ed DVD-V and Columbia US Blu-ray editions of the movie.

Qunitasonic could also be used, or IPS - Intelligent Perfected Stereo - I like the IQ though since it signifies intelligence, which both the encoder and decoder have. After Tommy, Quintaphonic was not used again until Gary Reber started using it to refer to 5.1 mixes, so it hasn't had a lot of use and doesn't have the baggage of Quad.
