In the mail today: Andy Jackson - 73 Days at Sea, DVD 5.1, think Signal to Noise is excellent - enjoying this one too :)

Ooooh, that sounds interesting. Do you have a physical copy? If so would you mind telling me who the publisher is, please?

...I did a quick search for it but could only find what looked like decidedly dodgy "free" downloads that required equally dodgy looking subscriptions to get them.

It was released by EMI back in 2001. The 4.0 mix on the DVD audio layer sounds great. There is also a DTS-CD version. I've heard good things about it, but haven't heard it myself.

Here's a review of the DVD-A... http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2002/Nov02/Holst_Planets_DVD.htm

And do you have this one: http://www.hraudio.net/showmusic.php?title=10841

Exquisite! Michael Lewin's follow up to this one which we both know and love http://www.hraudio.net/showmusic.php?title=9509

Also, another beauty from Janet Feder https://janetfeder.bandcamp.com/album/thisclose Be sure to play the sample "Crows." Recorded DSD in superb discrete 5.1 on the Sonoma with surround mastering/authoring by Gus Skinas.

that's good one. soundwise much better than "A Night At The Opera".
particularly bass and kick drum on "Another One Bites the Dust", albeit every time during this track there are chance some pictures will fall from wall.

i'm at this moment listening 10CC "Bloody Tourists" in 4.0

As long as they're from your mother in law :ugham: .

In the meantime he answered me by email but I'm waiting for his approval to publish his answer here. What I can tell (he won't sew me for that) is that his next dvd will contain a 5.1 mix :51banana:

His answer: Natuurlijk, geen probleem! Bedankt voor het vragen :)

Groetjes,
Arjen. (Ofcourse, no problem! Thanks for asking :)

Greetings Arjen

So here his reply to my question if he considered a 5.1 mix of Into the Electric Castle:

Moi Arjen,

== Hee Jan

je hebt ooit een fantastisch album gedaan in
surround (Actual Fantasy).

== Bedankt! Ja, ik ben daar heel trots op :)

Voor mij en vele anderen is Into the
Electric Castle nog steeds je beste en in surround zou dit een
absolute topper zijn. Heb je ooit overwogen (of zijn er mogelijkheden)
om dit geweldige album in surround uit te brengen? Hier een website
die dit 100% zou ondersteunen:
https://www.quadraphonicquad.com/fo...ow-(In-Surround)-Volume-2&p=283816#post283816

Groetjes,
Arjen.

All in Dutch :)

Anyone want a translation? (I'm lazy today, my weekend just started (just sunday that is :()

Anyone want a translation? (I'm lazy today, my weekend just started (just sunday that is :()

Here's a loosely translated short version:

I would love to offer Multichannel versions of the early albums but the fact is that most of them were recorded on ADAT tapes and the costs associated with producing new mixes would be much too high.

So the good news is, he'd love to do it. Maybe one day someone will offer to finance the project.

OK then here we go:
Question: Hi Arjen, you once did a fantastic album in surround (Actual Fantasy).
Answer: Thanks! Yes I'm very proud of that :D.
Me: For me and many others Into the
Electric Castle is still your best album and it would be a killer in surround. Have you ever considered (or are there possibilities) to do a surroundmix of this album? Here's a website that would support this a 100% (QQ link, still lazy :)). This still is my favourite album and I would kill for this (and with me many others).

Arjen: There are two problems. First it's an expensive and time consuming proces and that Actual Fantasy in the end wasn't cost effective (don't know if this is the right translation but let's say he lost money on it @:). The second is that these old albums (last century) are from before the computer era so all all the audio is spread out over many old ADAT tapes. I would have to import those on my computer, sync them and then do the mix all over again. I'd love to do it ofcourse but the recordcompany has to pay for it, and for now they don't really see profit in it :(. But I will try again!
In any case, I am going to do a 5.1 mix for the Ayreon Theater Equation DVD that is due to come out in june!

Greets,

Arjen. Pfew...

Edit: Oh and I asked him to drop by here if he felt like it (mentioning that Mr. Steven Wilson was also a member here :)).

Looks like we were typing in sync (me a bit longer than you it seems ;))

Thank you for asking Mr Ayreon about future surround releases. Unfortunate that Actual Fantasy did not sell better. Maybe things will be different in the future, hope so :)

Now- how about that Kramer guy?? Sven sure know how to use those skates!!

Me Too!! Didn't follow skating for a while but them dutchies are (or were) unbeatable on the long distances, I like that! FWIW it's probably the only wintersport we're good at (very good that is :)).

Pat Metheny Group
Imaginary Day...

a HUGE ALBUM...

So many ideas...
such great performances...this one need more than several listenings to absorb..

I'm still on it, but it's a great trip...

it's like when you are reading a book and you're reaching the end and you DON'T WANT TO END...

btw...this was in 97...was there really 88.1/24 back then , or is it an upsample? (sounds like 48K to me but these ears have been tortured...)

it's curious...the ESL DVD is a great mix..but so is the Laserdisc/VHS one!!!!!

IIRC, it's just a "transfer" of those mixes, not a remix. Maybe digitally "cleaned-up" a little. It is a good mix. Not discrete, no. But energetic and punchy. A little brilliance missing from the drums and the bottom-end is a tiny bit dingy, IMO, but very listenable and I'm glad the video has been preserved at least this well.

I have a friend......
