I guess with the passing of Gustav Leonhardt Mr Van Asperin is now the premier early music harpsichordist?
Well, Bob van Asperen certainly has been one of the top harpsichordists of recent years. He was a student of Gustav Leonhardt and later took over the teaching position of his famous mentor after Leonhardt’s retirement. They also performed together. I feel very fortunate to have Asperen’s recordings in multichannel Hirez. The harpsichord was one instrument that suffered from an overly bright sound in the early days of digital recordings. And, in surround the delicate sounds of the harpsichord seem to float in the air.

Asperen is also an accomplished organist. Aeolus has some excellent recordings of his organ performances.

I may have seen Mr Asperen perform with the Kuijken Brothers years ago.
I did see Mr Leonhardt in concert and met him backstage afterwards. I feel lucky for that opportunity.
Speaking of brothers, a dazzling display of guitar virtuosity from Peter and Zoltán Katona with the Carducci String Quartet [Channel Classics/Multi~CH SACD 5.0]

What a wonderful opportunity to meet Mr. Leonhardt like that! Finnish harpsichordist Aapo Häkkinen, studied under Asperen and (to a lesser degree) with Leonhardt. His recordings of Bach‘s keyboard concertos on Aeolus are worth checking out on Hirez multichannel (if you don’t have several recordings already. LOL! 😉) They use a small ensemble which gives a more intimate feel to these pieces. The surround mix is fairly immersive which provides a full and detailed soundstage, so the limited forces still have plenty of oomph. The only criticism I have is that the string section could be a bit less aggressive in places, but this is a minor point.
