Richard Thompson - The Old Kit Bag - DVD-A 5.1

One of the delights of this forum is when I'm reminded of stereo titles in my CD library I've not played since I re-configured my surround system.
Such a well-recorded album, bought it at an RT concert when it was his current release.

Got some good enhancement with Neo 6 Music or PLII, since the arrangements are somewhat spare.
Now on my want list for 5.1.

Probably my very fave "Silverline " DVDA

PERE UBU-THE MODERN DANCE

excellent surround, highly recommend. (y)

Pere Ubu: The Modern Dance

Just got this today and it's a great big wonderful surprise. I've played it 5 times in a row and every-time feels like the first time. Infectious bass, drums and guitar. I love it!

It is one of the very BEST surround discs from Silverline I have ever heard.Too bad this end of an era (silverline surround) was coming to an end.
Just when they got it right, yet.!! Excellent late 70's punk too.
This disc can compete with the best 5.1 discs from any and all the other labels, WB, EMI, UMG, etc, etc.

In the interview on the disc David Thomas (the singer) explains his total distaste for Punk. He describes Pere Ubu as New Wave. But yes, this is a fascinating disc; a must-have for this genre.

Oh, brother. Thanks, you guys, for hipping me to this release.
Wonder why isn't it listed in the polls?

Came yesterday from Israel after a three-week wait.
My first Silverline Dual Disc, new, happily paid $44 shipped.

Ditto on your comments, it's one of my all-time evergreen favorites, if not everybody's cup of tea.
(I was asked more than once to change the tape when playing it with passengers in the car.)

Wandered into my indie record store in '78 and heard this spinning behind the counter.
Bought it on the spot and wore it out, replaced the vinyl later when it showed up in a cut-out bin.

Purchased on CD 20 years later in the Datapanik in the Year Zero box set.
A couple more decades on, ecstatic to get it in 5.1.

Found this on the Ubutique site:

This DualDisc release features a mix in 5.1 surround sound by Chris Haynes, Silverline Studios, Los Angeles CA, June 15-17 2005, from digital transfers of the original 2" multitrack tapes.

David Thomas, who attended the surround sound remix session by Chris Haynes, reports: "This is the way we heard The Modern Dance in the studio... no, it's better than that, it's the way we heard it when we were playing it. The detailing is fantastic. The space reveals everything while still retaining the album's intensity and original intention. And the best thing is, if you want to hear something louder or quieter you just move your head a foot. Everything is there!

I received this disc today and I am blown away by how amazing it sounds. The mix is really good and the fidelity is actually really impressive. Of course, the album itself is a killer funk bomb with a few laid back moments to let you catch your breath.

$4 for a sealed copy, shipped! :banana::woopie:bounce17:51banana:

No worries Lad, I have a sealed copy put aside for me. I'll never have enough Soul in Multichannel.

They still sound amazing because they were well prepared to begin with.

I've finished Fire and have moved on to another amazing DTS CD, Edgar Winter's Jasmine Nightdreams. Love it!

Fantastico! I do hope you find Quad Honey as delicious as moi.. :p
(its so good, I think I even prefer it to Fire, which is phenomenal don't get me wrong.. the sound of the Honey DTS is excellent by any stretch, put aside DTS CD for a moment, if that was an SACD I doubt many would quibble at the sound quality! ) True, they sound so fab because they were mastered with such care from master tapes that musta been in great shape! I guess!

Ah.. Simon.. you have such impeccable taste! Seriously (kinda  ) that Jasmine Nightdreams,.. isn't it just sensational... its "Out of control.. its rock and roll.. waaaaaa...!!!"
('tis still one of my all-time favourite Quads.. having since heard hundreds of the buggers on scratchy old records whether I liked it or not.. !)

I have had this disc for some time - only listened to it once - and did not think much of it. Just ripped it as I usually does with my discs.

But several wrote positive things about this surround release - strange... Took another look at the disc and saw the "stage" thing written on it. This time I did not rip the mlp layer - turned the disc and ripped the lossy dts layer = profit!!!! Now it is a great listen :)

It has to be in surround, maybe not super-discrete, but full and immersive.

I do buy some classical discs, but a lot of them leave me disappointed, front heavy and only ambiance in the rears.

So curious.. where are your "rears" situated, Spock?
(i.e. channels 5 & 6 in a typical 5.1 channel config, where FL = 1, FR = 2, C = 3, LFE = 4, SL = 5, SR = 6)

Do you have any pics of your Vulcan 5.7-channel speaker setup at all?

I have the surrounds in the back of the room in each corner and the surround-back speakers on the back wall between these two surrounds. The surround backs are dipols.

So it is more of a quad set up than ordinary 5.1/7.1 with the surrounds on the sides. It works much better for music - and I think it is great for movies too.

Interesting Vulcan arrangement Mr. Spock! I love it!

Thanks for the info :)

(I agree with you btw, a great speaker arrangement/ setup for surround music can really be very good for movies too.. I don't know why some folk get so hung up about having it set up one way or another for each listening or viewing experience! :upthumb )

When you said previously you were running 4 x centre speakers did you mean you are using 4 speakers that were designed or intended to be utilised as Centre speakers but as satellites in your setup for the main channels FL/FR/SL/SR?
(I think that's what confused me more than anything when you were describing your setup before... although where technology's concerned I am very easily confused! )

No it was just a joke, bad one I think :)

I have a "normal" 7.1 setup with 4 speakers on the ceiling. 7.1.4 Atmos setup.

But there is more - 4 buttkikckers mounted on the sweetspot couch :)

Now enjoying:

I have this surround speaker system:

OH! :yikes

Its you with the subs in the couch...!!! OUCH..!! :couch

The sweet spot could become a sore spot if you're not careful..

This?

I have replaced the woofers with buttkickers some time ago. But I don't use them with music - only movies and gaming.

Slightly bonkers.. but..

(as a former gaming obsessive with a load of steering wheels, light guns, fishing rods, golf clubs, nunchuks, guitars, dance mats, the eye toy, Nights into Dreams analogue stick for the Saturn.. even Donkey Kong's bongo's for the Gamecube and the Genesis Menacer they made about 1 and a half games for.. are in the racks of gaming **** at home somewhere.. though I stopped short of the virtual boy, Kinect, Resident Evil chainsaw, Tony Hawks skateboard, the Activator and Samba di amigo maracas.. for various reasons.. still, I've got many of the nutty peripherals they did on most consoles over a roughly 20 year period.. and even I never went down the road of a chair with an ass-kicker in it..

..so, I dig it, I really dig it, maaaaan..!!

LSO LIVE has been releasing some fantastic classical recordings which come as 2 disc sets: 1 BD~A and 1 hybrid SACD. Three such highly recommended discs both for their performances and stunning sonics are: http://hraudio.net/showmusic.php?title=10579 and http://hraudio.net/showmusic.php?title=11765 and http://hraudio.net/showmusic.php?title=10041

London's Barbican has been cited for its very dry acoustic but Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the London Symphony Orchestra's performance of Mendelssohn's symphonies are sonically superb in every parameter.

This particular BD~A/V/SACD combo includes a Live BD~V video performance of the Mendelssohn Symphony #3 'Scottish' and the Hebrides Overture coupled with the Schumann Piano Concerto conducted by Gardiner and the LSO as well as the complete BD~A audio performance. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N3G3OSI/?tag=hraudio-20

ALL sets represent GREAT value for the money.......

I agree. I have a few of their SACDs and not only are the performances excellent, but the sonics are great and to top it off the discs can be found for about $10.
