Turnstiles - BJ (Ess Kew El Pee; No 8-tracks were harmed in the making of this Quad)

(can't somebody get this flippin fabbo quad out on sacd or dvd or something from the 4-ch master tapes...??? the 40th anniversary's a no go, so they can do like Universal did for Elt's Yellow Brick 40th and do it the following year...!!! at least before the lights go out on Broadway in 2017! :yikes )

"Seen the lights..
go out on Broadwaaaaayyyyy.."

:worthy

Phoenix - Labelle

Has anybody here compared the domestic SQ LP with the Israeli pressed SQ record?
Only I'm hearing things in the SQ from Israel I don't recall in the U.S. SQ pressing.. and I'm not even inebriated (for a change! ).. hmm.. could it be there are two Quad mixes of this one!? I'll record the Israeli one in after a good clean up and see if me lugholes are messin' with mah miiiiind..!@:

King Crimson - Thrak

I love how Pat Mastelotto is in nice big wide stereo in the fronts, while Bill Bruford is likewise in the rears. It's such a unique mixing choice, unlike anything I've ever experienced before, and I love it!

Philadelphia Freedom - M.F.S.B.

I was feeling a bit glum about the state of surround half an hour ago.. this stuff doesn't sell, etc etc.. but I'm now feeling kinda more philadelphiasophical about it.. :smokin

..even if we never get another Quad reissue, they can't take my babies away from me... you know, these old Quad records have given me more pleasure than at just about any time in the last 15 years of this surround music hobby.. its not been 18 months' plain sailing, there's been hassle and heartache along the way without a doubt but the course of true love never did run smooth and when I crank up the Surround Master, drop the needle on the record, pour a little drink and dim the lights, all the crap of the day disappears and I'm transported to a little bit of mid-70's surround heaven where suddenly the air is filled with sheer musical joy.. and my heart dances in time to the beat pumping out all around me.

Thanks Involve and all involved in Quad and all that.. happiness is right here, pouring out of these 4 ordinary speakers, in these 4 little hum drum walls.. any hobby is what you make of it and I'm gonna make the most of this one 'til I drop for sure.

Coming up next..

There ain't nothin'.. stoppin' us now.

(just about sums it up) :music

As I mentioned in another thread - I've never heard this album, so this is my first listen. So far, I LOVE it...and OK, I recognize Summer's Cauldron and Grass! (Edit - Whoa....I also recognize "Dear God") Wow, who would have thought??? No clue where I've heard those songs - as I promise no one I hung out with back in the day were a fan of this band....hmmmm.

Yeah me too. This one hasn't clicked yet; hopefully it's just a matter of more listens. So far it doesn't seem very musical...just a bunch of sounds they tried to string together.

I grew up with it so I love it, but it is their most 'out there' album. I mean, it's four 20 minute long songs so they weren't really going for catchy radio-friendly hits which is exactly what I like about this album, although I love their more focused catchy stuff too. I think of Tales as more of a spiritual and meditative experience.

By the way, what do you think of the overall sound quality and mix?

No problem with that part; on par with the other SW Yes releases.

I'm not really that familiar with them either but I do recognize a few of their songs that I heard on the radio back in the 80's I guess. That's probably where you recognize them from.

Yeah, I think it's a really great surround mix although I find it extremely light on the bottom end. That probably has to do with Steven Wilson's firm belief in keeping true to the source, which is cool, but I'm not averse to cranking my subs a bit when I feel like it needs it, and I have to crank the absolute **** out of this one (+8db!) Once I do, it sounds awesome, so that doesn't really bother me.

As sprawling as these songs are, it might take a while to really get into it. Maybe just ease in to it a little at a time, or you could just listen to it all the time like I do. :p I think it's the bees knees. Also, a good buzz might help, if you're into that kind of thing. ;)

I like the ease in to it idea; listening to one song per session seems like a good idea. And a good buzz...oh that sounds wonderful but really f's up me up due to my bi-polar disorder; drink and drugs - I just don't go there anymore.

Laura Nyro-13th Confession QUAD SACD

Bob Dylan-Live N.Y. 66. 5 ch SACD

Enjoyable discs both. Makes me wonder why they cancelled the Dylan disc back in 2004 ? Pretty good performance and the surround aint half bad for a live disc.

Nyro almost sounds similar to Carole King. Although the music could be better, I think the quad mix is well done.

A.F. did a great job , great service ,in bringing these two discs to our surround dinner table. Their commitment to release hidden quads and 5.1 SACD'S is much appreciated .:D(y)

Currently listening to one of two surround sound concerts on the "On (& Off) The Road" box set from King Crimson.
First up is the "Absent Lovers" live concert, recorded in Montreal in 1984.
This is not a discrete live mix by any means, more stereo-dominated with audience wraparound to the surround channels, but the fidelity is pretty good, and the content is stellar! :)
