Hawkwind - Wilson mix (Warrior on the Edge of Time)

I know, I know. Something tells me many do not care for this. But for me - this is one of Wilson's shining moments. I mean, wow...Hawkwind?? Who but Steven could take something so difficult as this and mix into a great sounding event? I dunno. I think it's wonderful. The music is SO dense, loud and distorted and psychedelic. I think he did a wonderful job and maintained the vibe.

It's one of my favorites. Honestly, you really can crank this up and it takes you to another galaxy.... :)@:

I love it! A one-of-a-kind. In terms of all that SW has done in 5.1, I feel lucky to have this one.

Well, it seems I can't multi- quote anymore...not sure why. I want to say that I'm very pleased that Adam and Wave like Hawkwind. I assumed I was on my own. :)

You are not alone! :D

..I didn't know you could even multi quote in the first place!

Keeper Of The Castle - Four Tops

I don't think I've posted in this thread before, but lately I've really been enjoying the SQ versions of The O'Jays 'Survival' and 'Family Reunion' (from 1975) and 'Message In The Music' (from 1976) processed through the Surround Master, thanks to the generosity of fellow forum member and creator of the worlds largest disco ball, fredblue.

I still find SQ a somewhat frustrating format in that the sound field seems to be in a constant state of flux between discrete/directional and not at all, but the Surround Master is the first (and maybe only) decoder that actually makes these albums an enjoyable listen in a quadraphonic sense. Even the somewhat poor separation of SQ can't hide the potential that's in these quad mixes, ether. I should stress I have literally no inside information in this regard, but with Vocalion releasing a full dozen quad SACDs next month, AF not totally out of the game, and other labels like Sony Japan, Warners and even AP doing quad right now, I'm more optimistic than ever that we could see these albums, or any of the other PIR quads come out in multichannel in the next few years. Let's hope so anyway!

This also gives me an opportunity to post a picture of one of my favourite promo posters from my collection, an unused copy of a nearly 7 foot high promo poster for the O'Jays 'Survival' album that would have been displayed in the New York City subway system. I'm not sure how it never got displayed, but I got from an eBay seller in Brooklyn about 10 years ago along with a couple of Parliament posters that were destined for display on the sides of buses there. I'd love to get it framed some day but I think I'd need about $500 and a warehouse-sized room to put it in.

Get down with the Philly sound!

Dave, myself and I'm sure a ton of other QQ posters and worldwide Surround mavens would love nothing more than to have ALL the PIR QUAD titles released in the universe. Not only are they classic in the true sense of the word but they still rock the casbah big time.

And I'm still trying to process how the folks at Dutton Vocalion are releasing 19 QUAD SACD titles (8 two~fers and 3 single QUAD SACDs) in one fell swoop.

Thanks for sharing that poster....brings back a lot of memories but good luck with having it framed and mounted. The cost of framing tonight could buy you one hell of a receiver.....trust me on that!

I'm also rather impressed that D/V can get a dozen quad SACDs off the launch pad like its nothing. They have a few things going on to their advantage, like the fact that easy listening titles are lower cost to license in some cases, less resistance to the idea from labels artists and managers, plus more favorable European licensing rates.

But still all this does not mean that we would wake up to news like we did. It still take money, and someone at D/V appears loaded, and going to town.

I really hope that they connect the dots that easy listening is not far from jazz which is a hop and skip to R&B, which pop is only around the corner, and Rock will be staring one in the face from there.

Could Nilsson and Edgar Winter be clear and free from a quad-block in D/V's eyes? Could this label become the quadraphonic redemption after quad-blocking? Can you imagine two-fers from The Guess Who, Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, and Nilsson?

Maybe I'm getting a little carried away, but I like to be optimistic.

Simple, it is Cash! Someone likes this music, adores quad, and put their money on the table.

They're also excellent surround mixes, trapped in SQ hell..!! The PIR Quads must be liberated...!! :yikes

Chicago VI from the Quadio box. Man, this one has a terrific sound and quad-mix.

I am on my second round to listen through all albums. Highlights for me regarding sound and mix are CTA, II, VI and VII - only dissapointment to me is V.

Yes! When I was discovering the majority of these Chicago Quads for the first time last year (thanks to the SQ Surround Master) VI stood out as particularly good and a real highlight wrt mix and sound quality, it may even be my favourite of the 8 Chicago Quad albums overall.

I'm still stunned at Full Sail coming out of SQ (and Q8) hell and onto SACD like it was waiting to be reborn. But I refuse to accept that it was the peak of the late quadraphonic redemption. There's got to be lots more that are that good just counting Sony vaults.

Word is getting round that this stuff works good on SACD and DVD discs!!!!

Full Sail is far from the late era Columbia peak (though it is an excellent Quad) not least because there's another couple of years of equally as good Quads from the label and some, including L&M's own "Native Sons", are even better mixes imho.. and when these things pan out well in SQ you just know the discrete Quad is gonna be something special.. fwiw, these are my fave '74-'77 Columbia & assoc label Quads;

Aerosmith - Rocks,
Andy Williams - Andy,
Art Garfunkel - Breakaway,
Billy Joel - Piano Man, Turnstiles,
Blood Sweat & Tears - Mirror Image, New City,
Blue Oyster Cult - Secret Treaties,
BT Express - Energy To Burn,
Burton Cummings - S/T,
Chicago - X,
Dave Mason - S/T,
Earth Wind & Fire - Head To The Sky, Open Our Eyes, That's The Way Of The World, Spirit,
Edgar Winter - Jasmine Nightdreams,
