Yep, that's DVD-V, and the sound on it really sucks compared to the lossless download of the same mix.
Amazing how much Dullby encoding can destroy good sound quality.
Plus, I cannot understand why Mike never offered 5.1 downloads for some of his other albums, especially "Ommadawn", "Hergest Ridge" and "Incantations".
I surely would have bought all of them that way, but instead, I just have "Five Miles Out" and "Discovery".

There is a lossless download of the 5.1 mix??? Still available? I'd be all over it.

Tubular Bells is another one of those albums that's been released in a bunch of different mixes and formats, a bit like Deep Purple's Machine Head.

As far as I know the mixes are available thusly:

70's Quad Mix: 2001 Virgin Records UK SACD
5.1 Remix: 2009 UMG CD+DVD-V Deluxe Edition (Dolby Digital 448kbps) / B&W 'Society Of Sound' download (48/24 5.1 FLAC)
The B&W download site was restricted to UK customers only, and I think required a UK-based payment method as well. I don't even think the download is available there any more, and when it was, it was really expensive, like £20 or £25 or something for the FLAC files.

Tubular Bells 2003 is a modern re-recording of the original album and was released the same year by WMG (in both the US and Europe) as a full 5.1 96/24 DVD-A.

Did anyone take a look at the link Ralph (EARS) provided? It shows a "supposed" DVD-A of the 2003 mix, used for around $15. IS, that the DVD-A, or bogus? (post 7406)

Isn't the QUAD SACD of TB the preferred version? I may have to compare to the 5.1 ac3 later tonight...

The fidelity of the SACD is certainly better than the DVD-V disc, but the 5.1 mix is better than the Quad Mix IMHO and the best way to hear it is via the B&W lossless download. :)

I think the Rhino version (in link) is not 96/24. See this LINK

If you read the review whose link I posted above [Post 7409] you will discover that it was indeed a re~recording which Oldfield did to correct some of the aberrations of the original and it is OLDFIELD'S PREFERRED version over the old QUAD even though reviewer Robinson finds fault with some of the 'panning' choices.

I LOVE my DVD~A 5.1. Rest assured it sounds MUCH better than the DVD~V 5.1 which I also have.

But again, to be clear. The DVD-A you have appears to be different than the DVD-A referenced in the link where it can be found for $15 used. They don't seem like the same disc....

I see what you mean. I'd email the vendor via amazon and inquire whether it's the DVD~A 5.1 released by Rhino in 2004. That's all I can tell you, Gene. It's worth a try! I'd maybe order it first and contact the vendor when you place the order in case it is legit.

Sorry everyone for taking over this thread with discussion about Tubular Bells. I mean, it just morphed into something different. It's an important discussion though. :)

Gene, finally dug out my copy of TB......SAME exact cover as the link (the cheap one) I provided you with. Sorry I haven't got a scanner to prove it but rest assured the same exact cover. All the DVD~Audio info is on the spine which is not replicated in the Amazon photo.

OK, no problem. I went ahead and ordered. I guess the odd part is you said yours was 96/24 and the link I provided it said it was only 48/24. Guess I don't understand which it is.
