ohh... get your oven gloves on, its hot potato time..!! :flameopcorn
this is a tricky one because the official line is there's nothing wrong with them, they're correct as is.
I say this since it was verified on QQ by Brian Moura that the Quad master tapes (marked on the boxes? designated by tones on the leader of the tape? I dunno..) for some of these Sony Quads that have contentious rear channels specify the channel arrangement and that is the self-same channel layout that ended up on the consumer releases on both SQ LP/Q8 and Sony SACDs (Isleys 3+3, O'Jays Ship Ahoy are two that come to mind, this was wrt a conversation here about the Audio Fidelity Collection Surround SACD iirc).
how and when such potential channel swaps may have happened in the process from creation of the Quad mix through to replication for Quad LP/8-track release I've no idea.. maybe the mixes as presented are as they should be on the SQ/Q8/SACD versions, many of the people involved in the mixing and whatnot are either deceased or not saying..
..but my own take is sometimes these Quads just seem (for me) to fall into place better when you reverse the rears (3 + 3 in
particular is one I'm convinced the rears are flipped.. Ship Ahoy I've bleated on about before ad nauseam, some things seem
right when you reverse the rears other stuff seems out of whack in the mix when you flip 'em.. still love it though, one of me Quad faves! )
In a nutshell,
Some are "intentional" and some are "goof ups" . But whatever floats your boat, I say.
I just (and always have) loved my Tull-War Child with the adventurous mix in cross channel (Back Door Angels, I believe).
First time I heard that Quad CD-4 Mix I was astounded . Hurray for something different ! :51banana::upthumb
