I have a trio of them Simon, Madman, GYBR, and Captain Fantastic. You know, I love them all and Madman may be my favourite, but recently I was checking out the DR on their database and none of these SACDs faired very well. So I shrugged my shoulders and went back to enjoying them ;)
Yes, the DR numbers are not telling the whole story. It is nice for comparison but it is the music that counts.

Thank you so much, a wealth of information to delve into here! :)

Leaning towards the Gardiner, Susskind or Bernstein recordings, all a little steep for me right now...

As leahypc mentioned, keep an eye out for those. A reasonably priced one is bound to turn up.

And if you (or anyone) enjoys transcriptions, there are 2 fantastic versions of Holst's Planets available in excellent surround sound.

One version is for pipe organ... "Holst: The Planets Op. 32 - Hansjörg Albrecht" (SACD)

2 pipe organs are used, one in the front channels and a second in the rear channels.

The other is for one piano played by 2 players. "Zoforbit : A Space Odyssey" (Bluray)

Thanks Lute! Definitely keep my eye out for a deal...and I HAVE been looking at both the piano and organ recommendations here. Noticed them on SA-CD.net as I was perusing The Planets. Both are affordable and may tide me over till I can get one of the others. The reviews were extremely helpful, thank you. The organs sound so tempting, but the extras and 7.1 on the piano blu ray also have my attention. Decisions, decisions!@:

Thanks Lute! There are some very affordable options out there for this one. Do you have any recommendations (surround wise) for the original orchestral version?

Hi everyone,

Playing Elton John's eponymous album on SACD and I'm floored by the amazing mixes. So many fabulous deep cuts on this one. And what about those Paul Buckmaster's arrangements? Bloody marvelous! This will easily be one of my faves along with the Moody Blues SACD set. Cannot wait to hear Madman On The Water.

I don't think I can overstate the impact those early EJ albums had on me. I never grow tired of them. And, yes, the surround mixes are superb.

BTW If you like Buckmaster's orchestrations on the self titled LP just wait for Madman!! You will not find better string writing on a pop album anywhere. (y)

Evenin' all!

There's just something about the Bad Seeds' music which fits my mood perfectly. Just received this one and I'm sure glad to have it.The Multichannel mix isn't as sexy as some of the other Nick Cave discs, but it's still a sweet listen.

I believe Holst originally composed The Planets for 2 pianos and Neptune for organ. So, in a way the orchestral version is the 'transcription'. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Planets
Actually, we got started discussing the orchestral version and I posted some recommendations on post #1525. You might have missed it as this thread moves fast, I'll post it again.

Some of these are OOP and getting expensive. Andrew Davis's recording on Chandos is still available at reasonable prices and can be easily recommended. But, don't give up on the older Quad recordings. I'm sure they can be gotten for a fair price.

André Previn's famous EMI Quad recording is available on DVD-A and DTS CD. These are a little pricey, but you'll probably be able to find a deal if you search around. It would be nice if PentaTone would start reissuing EMI Quad recordings on their SACD Quad series.

Walter Susskind's performance with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra is also an excellent Quad recording. MoFi's Mch SACD is also going for big bucks, unfortunately.

There was also a Quad recording by Leonard Bernstein. It was released on Mch SACD, but it received mixed reviews. Some love it, but others felt it wasn't the real discrete Quad mix, but a stereo up-sample. I haven't heard it myself.

Here's an interesting article on Susskind's and other recordings of the Planets.

Chandos's Mch SACD conducted by Andrew Davis is also very good. It's not an aggressive Quad mix, but the natural ambiance is done well and the performance is first rate.

Another fine Mch SACD is John Eliot Gardiner's 1994 recording. The surround mix is good, but ambient.

There is also Membran's SACD of Holst: The Planets Op. 32, St. Paul's Suite for Strings Op. 29 No. 2 performed by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra And Vernon Handley (conductor). Although it's probably a synthesized surround mix, this performance is excellent. The Membran series is usually bargain price, but this one has gone up. I think this one can be found cheap, though. http://www.amazon.com/Holst-Planets...:+The+Planets,+St.+Paul's+Suite+-+RPO/Handley

Thanks so much for the detailed response, Lute! Yes, I had missed the earlier discussion. I appreciate you taking the time to compile the links, etc. I look forward to pursuing this.

I'm embarrassed to say, I've never listened to Nick Cave...but of course he gets lots of great reviews...so not sure why I haven't. He just slipped under the GOS radar.

Nick Cave completely slipped under my radar too until I found about five of his albums with the surround mixes at a local music store here in Nashville, so I bought the lot (all five albums I found)
Haven't bought any others since then, but Nick's one of those artists I'm open to buying albums of when finding them in the stores. Probably won't buy any online since they're just DVD-V, and I need to save my money for the higher-resolution stuff. :)

I was lucky to catch SAGA many times in the bars of Ottawa in the 70s. They were killer musicians and on the technological edges with their gear. I'd buy any of their albums with a quality surround mix.

LOVE Saga. Seem them a few times here in the UK. As for the albums, got 'em all. 'Don't Be Late' in 5.1 Yes Please!!

Saga's 2004 album called "Network" came with a 5.1 mix. I know I had it at one point but I am not sure if I still do have it buried in my stored collection. The fact that I can't even recall makes me think the mix was a stinker. Never was a major fan but found a cut or two on each album that I could like. They have a great sounding cover of "Solsbury Hill" on the compilation album "The Works" in 1991.

Hi everyone, :)

Here's another one I've been wanting to hear for a long time and which I received today. My first Pentatone Quad SACD. I really like the sound of this one. I've always been a fan of the Aranjuez and I'm glad to have added another lovely version.
