yes indeedy! so far, so good!
obviously my natural tastes dictate i'd rather this batch comprised of Harold Melvin, The O'Jays, MFSB, REO Speedwagon, Dave Mason, Fredgar Winter.. all that Soul/Rock & Pop stuff... but.. it's good to mix it up and get outta me comfort zone.. and the surround sounds been so good on all this lot so far i haven't thought about gettin' down to the Philly Sound for ooh at least the last 6 hours!

I picked this up at a record store yesterday afternoon- the place is absolutely loaded with quad LPs, I counted almost 20 (!). It looks as if someone traded in their entire quad collection to this one store. Quite a bit of soul stuff, which doesn't show up too often- I saw one of the Billy Pauls, one of the MFSBs, and both of the live albums (O'Jays and Billy Paul). Unfortunately they're being offered at highly inflated prices. Relatively common stuff you could grab on Discogs or eBay in the $10-20 range is there for like $35-50. Really aggravating. This was marked at $25 and I managed to talk them down to like $18. Probably could've found it online for less, but now I don't have to wait and the vinyl in very good shape.
This is another one of those flashy hyperactive PIR quad mixes- it reminds me a lot of the quad treatment on the O'Jays' Ship Ahoy. The results through the Tate are absolutely stunning. As with most PIR quads, the group backing vocals are isolated in the rears with the lead upfront. Horns and strings are generally in the rears as well. Sometimes the vocals trade off between the front channels (most notably on "It All Depends On You"), like on the Chicago and Loggins & Messina quads.
But here's where it gets really fun: the backing vocals often circle or zig-zag around the room ("I lost it...sorry I lost it", "is there a place for me", etc). Absolutely awesome. The decoding is so good you can actually "see" the panning effects in the decoded waveforms.

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes' other quad release, Wake Up Everybody, was never released in a discrete format (only SQ-encoded vinyl). We know the master still exists because the title track appears in discrete form on AF's The Collection SACD. Seems perfect for a DV two-fer, no?
Once in awhile, Cowboy Buckley, it's good to experience these 'shit kickers' in all their QUAD glory........behind closed doors! Yep, Charlie Rich's awaiting ....... Hee Haw!
i hear you Sheriff Ralphie!
tbh i played the new Charlie 2-fer briefly a couple of hours ago but i was a bit burnt out on music at that point (7+ hours end to end, i needed a break!) and wasn't quite feeling it, i'll give him another go in the week and report back to y'all..!
El Bimbo - Paul Mauriat
oh man.. i'm a sucker for a himbo at the best of times but this is a most sumptuous sounding bimbo if ever i heard one!! this may be a case of love at first listen
straight off the bat, this really breathes life, it is one of the airiest, most open surround mixes and masterings i've ever heard. ever. if it errs ever so slightly on the brighter than the warmer side of the eq spectrum, i really think that is sheer recorded detail coming through.. its chock full of detail and instrument balances to me sound absolutely spot on, every instrument in each channel has such a realistic texture to it, every element nestles so sweetly in its own space.
jaw = on floor.
i was looking at the rear inlay for this wee gem and was marvelling at, well, two main things of wonder, really..
1.) what an effort this must have been from a compilation point of view, the 2 Quad albums encompass 24 tracks from a span of several years (71-75 inclusive)
and 2.) that this is yet another wonderful-sounding Universal Music-licensed Quad release from Vocalion..
..perhaps i'm stretching things beyond the realms of possibility here but we know UMe hold the rights to many a surround treasure.. maybe 2019 is "the year we make contact" with some of their out of this world multichannel mixes courtesy of DV..
