...talked to him about JLP's LP and his hand size (since he does these chords that reach 4-5 frets); well, our hands are about the same size!!!

The guy sure has a unique approach to the instrument. He plays all those closely-voiced chords that would be simple to reach on a piano, but are insanely difficult on a guitar - unless you've got hands (and a mind) like his, of course.

I've been a fan since I heard Jean Luc Ponty's "Enigmatic Ocean" back in the late 70's...
Met him in Boston after seeing his show on the "Atavachron" tour in 1987 (the SYNTHAXE tour! Gary Husband on drums!)...LOVELY person...he was having a Coronita or two...talked to him about JLP's LP and his hand size (since he does these chords that reach 4-5 frets); well, our hands are about the same size!!!

Anyway, the ANW SACD is a splendid performance but , unfortunately a very poor MCH mix..but , hey, how much can you do with a gtr , a bass and drums?

You can do a GREAT MC mix with just drums. SW would have done wonders with Chad's drum kit.

True, but SW had OTHER instruments as well on most of his remixes...I personally would find it weird to JUST HAVE DRUMS in surround and the gtr and bass in the fronts , or maybe a bit spread out...

It would not sound weird. Drums in all 5 speakers, bass in center, guitar in stereo.

Jethro Tull Live Blu Ray has drums mixed in surround, I do not like the compressed mastering, but the mix is great.

The Planets - Isao Tomita - Don Barrett
This is a weird disc. Says Dullby Surround on da backside. But, no audio options.
My reeceevure auto-magically switched in to Dullby PLII Movie.
Definitely some discreetiness. Very koo muzik too. Electronic version of Da Planetz.

The mix leaves a lot to be desired, but the recording quality and just the expanded sound field make it a really enjoyable disc, for sure.

Eric Clapton - There's One In a Every Crowd DTSCD... Wow, what an intimate, discrete mix and warm, analog sound. Nice mellow late night grooves...:smokin

One of my all-time favourite Quads.. the surround remix takes some fairly pedestrian material and transforms it, engaging you in a way the stereo just can't (try A-B-ing the original stereo mix and the Quad and see for yourself, it's quite the revelation imho.)

My favourite Tomita Dolby Surround CD is "Debussy: Snowflakes Are Dancing", try it in PLII Music mode with the centre channel shut off and... enjoy :)

..really?..wow..never thought it would fetch big bucks!!!
Wish I had and extra copy for you.. ask in the forum...maybe someone is willing to part with their copy..you never know!!!

There would be no audio options. It is just another Quad matrix-encoded CD. Dolby Surround is the only option. If you don't decode it as that, it will simply play as stereo. ALL the Dolby Surround CD's are the same way.

There are many great Dolby Surround CD's on RCA & Telarc.

What the good lady said..! :upthumb

(here's some of me Telarc Dolby surround CDs..
ignore the one at bottom right with DTS sticker, that's a Telarc DTS-CD, though there is also a Dolby Surround encoded CD of that title afaik)

This sucka happens to be a DVD. Only says stereo on the DVD, but lists surround on the packaging.
It's just a first for me where there are no options on the DVD and where my receiver automatically kicks in to PLII.
I thought PLII was just meant for getting a faux-surround experience out of a stereo-only mix.
But this disc is VERY discrete at times. I guess if one's receiver isn't capable of Dolby surround it will default to a stereo layer?

Sorry, lost the gist.. are we talking about a Stereo-only Tomita Planets DVD?

Edit: Are there any soundtrack options for Surround/Stereo when you hit the "Audio" button on the remote control of your DVD player while the disc is spinning..?

Well, yes and no. We are talking about a Tomita Planets DVD. It has a movie of our Solar System that runs with it.
The DVD only says stereo, the packaging list Dolby Surround. It is DEFINITELY discrete. I've just never experienced this behavior out of my gear before. It switches to PLII even when I set the receiver to Direct (where I leave it for surround stuff - I just want the bits off the disc, no gimmicks).
