Well, yes and no. We are talking about a Tomita Planets DVD. It has a movie of our Solar System that runs with it.
The DVD only says stereo, the packaging list Dolby Surround. It is DEFINITELY discrete. I've just never experienced this behavior out of my gear before. It switches to PLII even when I set the receiver to Direct (where I leave it for surround stuff - I just want the bits off the disc, no gimmicks).

Got it! :upthumb

Are there any soundtrack options (e.g. Surround.. Stereo) when you hit the "Audio" button on the remote control of your DVD player while the disc is spinning..?

Definitely no options on any menus. I will search for an audio button, but I don't believe my Oppo has one. It does have a settings button, where you can set behavior for SACD playback, etc.

It is the Planets DVD pictured here, btw:

Never seen (or heard) that Planets DVD-V before..

My Cambridge Audio Blu-ray player (essentially an Oppo BDP-93 clone) remote looks like this..

.. the "Audio/Subtitle" button cycles thru the different sound options on a DVD each time you hit it. That's the kinda button you're looking for I guess..

Only audio option listed when using the audio button is 1/1 English Dolby Digital Stereo!

Handel Messiah - High Performance Dolby Surround CD - Yes, it decodes fine with Pro Logic or PLIIx.
Wonderful sound. Very immersive mix. No surround wow, but tasteful placement of parts and superb separation.
