Well Tomita-Firebird was excellent, to think one man used so many electronic instruments is fascinating. I wouldn't say I could listen all the time as I am a rock/blues/soul guy but it was good and the 4.0 was fantastic.
Now I am listening to this, sounds horrible compared to Firebird but it is surround.

I listened to mine once years ago, and thought it sounded so poorly it has sat in a box ever since(n)

Musically or sonically? Those with former releases are saying this sounds leaps and bounds better. I think it sounds fantastic.

**Edit, Baggy was talking about D-V's Firebird!!!**

I guess I'll pull it back out and give it another try, and I was talking about sonically; but then my system is a much improved one since then also, so it deserves a second chance Mr. Baggins:cool:

Oh, dang, I thought you were talking about D-V's recent Firebird release. I see now there was an attachment of The Police Every Breath DTS.
I can't vouch for that, Pup. I can say the SACD sounds far better than the video collection, which is DTS. I really like the SACD, though it isn't a 10 sonically, it's pretty damned nice.
Again, not sure about the DTS disc.

Yup, I've only got the dts, but still I need to re-affirm if it still sounds as bad as I remember, and I didn't even know there was an SACD, so I'll look into that also.

Put me in the camp that really enjoys the Police Every Breath hits disc. I bought the original DTS CD when it was released and enjoyed it, and then picked up the SACD on a whim because I happened to see it on a store shelf at HMV Oxford St. in London. I was in buying a couple of other things and reasoned with myself by saying that the SACD was more convenient (because of the CD layer) and I could give the DTS disc to a friend of mine who also had a surround sound system.

Suffice it to say I was more than pleasantly surprised when the SACD seemed to be a noticeable sonic improvement on the old DTS CD. I don't think it's a perfect 5.1 mix (the buried guitar overdub in the chorus of King of Pain is really the only stand-out shortcoming for me) but I find it very satisfying overall, and if I'm going to listen to some Police, 90% of the time it's this disc that's getting spun.

Markie ....the mch SACD [if you can find it] sounds MUCH better ...... and to think you want to 'experiment' with 8 tracks...which I equate with a 'leaky roof!'

I just read through both Polls for the two, and sounds like I need to search out the SACD. Jonathan's comments in the dts Poll were interesting, in case a little adjustment is considered.

Been a rough day but I think I'm on to something ..... I smell the blood of three iconic Englishman .........A Police Chase?

I don't remember the DTS CD well enough to say, but I never had a problem with the channel levels on the SACD. There's at least one track, Walking on the Moon, where the guitar hits in the intro pan from front to rear, and vice versa - it always seemed to me like they did so at constant volume as they moved, which I always took as a sign that I was hearing the mix at the channel levels that the mixing engineer intended.

If I jacked up the rears by +6dB that would be all out of whack. Not all mixes are designed to have equal power in every channel like old quad mixes, and using waveforms to decide that can be deceiving, because front channels often look like bigger waveforms on account of all the spikes from the drum transients.

All great thoughts, I've been tortured lately simply because many titles I'm hearing, from various sources, have volume problems between the fronts and rears. Since I'm listening direct analog to a Marantz AVR-8500 I'm unable to make on the fly adjustments. I could go on and on, but this isn't the place for it. Thanks for your input steelydave(y)

On my system via HDMI, the mch SACD of Every Breath You Take sounds simply breathtaking ......OTOH, the DTS CD pales in comparison. Again, one of those readily available $6 titles from the old BMG Music club .... but scarce as a houndstooth nowadays, Pupster!

Yes, but the Pupster loves a good challenge:D
