All of the following systems have exactly the same encoding signals for identical source positions around the listener.

Scheiber
Dynaco diamond
QS
QX
Dolby Stereo (Dolby Surround)
Dolby Pro Logic
Dolby Pro Logic II

This is provided that the following are true:

- The speaker locations the system specifies encoding and decoding for are ignored.
- The 4-corner encoders the system specifies for converting from discrete are not used.
- All of the encodings are normalized (encoded to the same level).

Note that the encoding and decoding equations were made with a different part of the signal having a value of unity. This was probably due to the different methods used by the developers.

These differences hid the fact that the systems were identical.

I also derived the same encoding as a possible system before I knew the details of any of the systems except the Dynaco diamond (which was not published in normalized form).

Interesting question regarding CD version of Music. I will check as I have the QS lp, and think have a CD copy. I have compared others like ABC Impulse years CDs with the QS version of same album/artist where original lp was only in QS matrix format, and playing both QS vinyl and CD through latest version QS decoder of Sansui variomatrix receiver and decodes same.

The fact there was only a quad release (single inventory) certainly does not guarantee that any CD reissue will be matrix encoded. Just one example - the EMI recordings of English National Opera’s 1970s Ring Cycle were only ever available on LP in SQ format. Only last year I asked Chandos who re-released those recordings on CD if they were matrixed and they confirmed that they were stereo only and not were definitely not SQ encoded.

Essentially, they did, but not for everything they released in quad. They did release some movie music, as well as some miscellaneous instrumental recordings, and several Tomita albums. Their use of Dolby Surround made them basically compatible with QS (the systems are nearly the same). Playing any of these discs through the Surround Master, you'd almost swear they're discrete.

Oh really , can you please be more specific re:dates ,and releases and the matrix they used ?

If your referring to the 90's Dolby Surround, that's still a very large gap between 77 and 90.

Yes indeed, that's sadly very true of EMI/Angel Classical recordings. As a matter of historic information, Larry Clifton was notified in the early 80's that all future EMI quad single inventory releases would come from new stereo masters. Larry also advised any member to protest this anti quad decision and provided an address in his Quad Quarterly.

What does the booklet say? I have the LP box set ang all records are clearly ladled as Stereo/SQ Quad.

Although they say "this CD set is in stereo", all of the cd's retain the quad SQ matrix.

It was once reported that the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab SACD was QS encoded, so I bought it. Sadly it's stereo only. The QS encoded LP is my favourite of all the QS encodes!
It may not be helpful, but when I compared the 2ch track of SACD of Mobile Fidelity and the CD of VOXBOX (although I can't say that one of them is the QS version), the mix was very different.

They may have been told to say that because the bigwigs believe that SQ encoding would hurt sales.

In order for the CD to not be SQ encoded, the recording would have to be mixed down again.
