I’m not so sure, it’s most likely down to the fact that SW probably has no time on his hands, from finishing his new solo album to doing remix work for other artists.
I mean possibly... seems unlikely though. I find it somewhat hard to believe that in the five years between albums they couldn't have booked a slot with SW in advance. If he has time to do all these mixes for everyone else, I find it hard to believe they couldn't have approached him a year ago and set a time together. Probably another reason. It could also just be that Opeth wanted someone else to mix it.

listened to the album and tbh it didn't grab me, too theatrical, a bit over the place. I have listened to it at least 3 times so I guess I can already make an opinion.
Will see if the Atmos change my opinion.

I don't know what to expect and I don't have any specific expectations either, which doesn't mean I'm not interested - Opeth used to be my favorite active band between 2005 and 2015 or so, and I still love them dearly, so it's a very anticipated release for me. They were also the reason why I joined this forum around the release date of Pale Communion.

Listened to the first single twice (only in stereo), and haven't heard a note from the second one. I don't want to spoil the first album listen from start to finish. I'm not even sure if I'll listen to it first on Tidal, or will wait for the CD/Blu-ray to arrive (I haven't ordered it yet - I'll do that as soon as I see it's actually in stock, not breaking my 'no preorders' policy 😜).

Reviews of the album seem positive. We'll see about the Atmos mix, but in the end it's the music that matters, right? 😉
I mean, yes but if only the music is good and not the Atmos, I wouldn't pay for the Atmos edition.

There was a time when they used to sneak in the second disc with multichannel mix with just a fraction more than the CD only edition.

These days it's a profitable business putting out Atmos mixes locked in boxes.

I pre-ordered this with amazon for £15.99, not expensive for a cd/blu ray package

OK, but that's not the case with this album... The CD+Blu-ray combo can be found for ~$20.

Expecting my copy tomorrow from Amazon - $20 for a CD/BD combo package is more than reasonable. I've yet to be disappointed by an Opeth album and based on all the reviews this will be no exception. Plus you've got Ian Anderson on flute and spoken word! Guess all those Grammy voters back in 1989 were right all along. 😜
