I’m not so sure, it’s most likely down to the fact that SW probably has no time on his hands, from finishing his new solo album to doing remix work for other artists.
I mean possibly... seems unlikely though. I find it somewhat hard to believe that in the five years between albums they couldn't have booked a slot with SW in advance. If he has time to do all these mixes for everyone else, I find it hard to believe they couldn't have approached him a year ago and set a time together. Probably another reason. It could also just be that Opeth wanted someone else to mix it.

listened to the album and tbh it didn't grab me, too theatrical, a bit over the place. I have listened to it at least 3 times so I guess I can already make an opinion.
Will see if the Atmos change my opinion.

I don't know what to expect and I don't have any specific expectations either, which doesn't mean I'm not interested - Opeth used to be my favorite active band between 2005 and 2015 or so, and I still love them dearly, so it's a very anticipated release for me. They were also the reason why I joined this forum around the release date of Pale Communion.

Listened to the first single twice (only in stereo), and haven't heard a note from the second one. I don't want to spoil the first album listen from start to finish. I'm not even sure if I'll listen to it first on Tidal, or will wait for the CD/Blu-ray to arrive (I haven't ordered it yet - I'll do that as soon as I see it's actually in stock, not breaking my 'no preorders' policy 😜).

Reviews of the album seem positive. We'll see about the Atmos mix, but in the end it's the music that matters, right? 😉
I mean, yes but if only the music is good and not the Atmos, I wouldn't pay for the Atmos edition.

There was a time when they used to sneak in the second disc with multichannel mix with just a fraction more than the CD only edition.

These days it's a profitable business putting out Atmos mixes locked in boxes.

I pre-ordered this with amazon for £15.99, not expensive for a cd/blu ray package

OK, but that's not the case with this album... The CD+Blu-ray combo can be found for ~$20.

Expecting my copy tomorrow from Amazon - $20 for a CD/BD combo package is more than reasonable. I've yet to be disappointed by an Opeth album and based on all the reviews this will be no exception. Plus you've got Ian Anderson on flute and spoken word! Guess all those Grammy voters back in 1989 were right all along. 😜

Now that I've heard the whole album properly in Atmos, and not just the first two songs that were made available, I think I'm OK with just listening to it on Tidal. I'm OK with concept albums, but this may be just a wee bit too concepty for me. Something that only becomes apparent when listening to the whole album.

This impression is based on the first listen, mind and utterly personal. I may end up falling in love with it.

Addl: Wonderful Atmos mix though. Especially when played super loud.

Massive Opeth fan here, so much so, their logo is inked on my upper arm. I've purposely avoided listening to any of the tracks to date as I want to hear it as a complete piece of work. I much prefer their later 'prog' work with clean vocals but I did, over the years, come to appreciate the 'cookie monster' interludes. I'd use 'Ghost Reveries' as an example of that blend and it's still probably my favourite Opeth album. For this one, I have restrained my expectations as I know what to expect from a vocals perspective. From the reviews I have read, I also believe that this album is going to be a very slow burner and one that will only reveal itself fully after multiple/repeated plays. As we all know, those albums of often turn out to be the most rewarding.

Odd. My order from Amazon is out for delivery, today. No, I don't have it yet, but it says it will arrive between 4-7pm central.

Mine (ordered in August) is supposed to be here by 10PM, but isn't out for delivery yet (it's now 1230PM). Whatever Amazon thinks is this bluray has moved from Minneapolis to Las Vegas in the past day, so unless they're blowing smoke there's definitely a bluray with my name on it coming soon. Hopefully!

I like reading this, because you're honestly the very first example of "massive Opeth fan" I've ever come across in my life who apparently really got into them after they quit the death metal vocals. Maybe it's because I come mostly from metal circles in my background as music enthusiast, and every single big Opeth fan I know (myself included) became such a fan during their progressive death metal era - either right after the release of Ghost Reveries or (most of the times) way before that.

So I'm actually very happy to see that someone really got into them during the prog rock, clean vocals only phase. I mean, as a really massive fan, not just as someone who enjoys their music but without becoming an enthusiastic follower. I'm saying this because I'm under the impression that these newer Opeth albums got a somewhat lukewarm reception by many. Older fans were generally disappointed by the stilistic change to a less unique, more derivative music (I can agree with this - the older albums sounded unlike anything else out there, whereas the recent ones make you feel like "this has been done before"), and those new listeners who came from a prog rock, non metal (or at least non extreme metal) background tend to find their music nice, but far from groundbreaking, so it seems they almost never become "massive fans" but just "people who like some of their music" instead.

For what it's worth, I'm among those who think the progressive death metal era is what made Opeth a special band. But I do appreciate their newer albums as well (especially Pale Communion - their modern masterpiece if you ask me), and it's nice to see that they can still make their fanbase grow with these.
