Ambrosia's "Somewhere I've Never Traveled".
A vastly under-rated album very well done (and produced by Alan Parsons)

-Bob
Out of Ambrosia's albums, I'd prefer their first (the self titled album).

It took them forever to release those on CD, as I recall.

(I've got a "Somewhere I've Never Travelled" with the Pyramid, which is pretty cool.)

TOUGH thread! Thanks to those already mentioning XTC, Ambrosia, VDGG, Gentle Giant and others I wanted to mention. So that means I have to shuffle through the last few to arrive at one that is most significant to me.

Jeff Buckley - Grace

I would volunteer my humble services for XTC surround mixing

I was absolutely thrilled when I could actually get it on cd. Imagine a 5.1 mix.... it would be breathtaking. Absolutely one of my favorite albums ever!!

Well I know David Pack. In fact Deb and I were the witness to his wedding. David and his wife Tracy got married on a Kauai beach. Think we could get them to do a 5.1 mix! Probably not a chance in hell as the guys do not get along. That is one reason Dave is not with them anymore. Our window for legacy recordings in 5.1 may be waning. Just because of life getting in the way.:(

Good question. Will like to see how it looks like.

Led Zeppelin II, although I'd be happy to hear I, III and IV as well.

The Staple Singers "stax profiles" , thick thick mix on many of the cuts , was listening on headphones tonight . Any of those old Stax records would be great I think ? I did hear "Shaft " in quad at a store once , oh la la !

Of course legend has it that someone approached Jimmy Page about remixing IV, and he didn't want to do it. That some Zep--albeit live--came along later in 5.1 does indicate that Page has no problem with that, but maybe he didn't want to tamper with the special magic of the studio stuff, warts and all(and there is a curious and intentional minimalism and crudity to that early music). It's also true that the very act of remastering to digital audio can 'color' the sonics of those recordings anyway, relative to whatever vinyl and tape we were used to.

I think all of the Zep albums would be great fun in 5.1, but IV was THE logical choice; shame it didn't happen, it has some remarkable moments scattered throughout, and some very basic stuff; holds up nicely, a tenuous but successful mix of hard and soft, macho swagger and quiet lookings back; of drugs, wild times, and glorious fantasies fueled by the rock'n'roll machine.

ED :)

A number of really good suggestions above, but one that keeps floating into my consciousness is Crime of the Century by Supertramp. I think these songs would really lend themselves to surround. I wasn't a Quad person so I don't know if there was ever a Quad version.

I think (but I might be thinking of another supertramp LP), that "Crime of the Century" shows up on quad listings but was never actually released.

can't someone go and speak to Marillion about re-releasing their catalog in 5.1? it'd be awesome

Beastie Boys, Hello Nasty

Released in 1998, I am sure the multis still exist; the BBs love to experiment & I bet wouldn't mind the surround treatment; almost all tracks have lots of "stuff" for a surround mixer to work with; recording quality is good; the artists are still around to supervise the mix; and because I love this album.

Note to those unfamiliar with their work: the Beasties made much more sophisticated music than the overplayed songs Brass Monkey & Fight For Your Right. In fact when Paul's Boutique debuted in '89, that's why commercial radio almost abandoned them. Check out their last album to see what I mean (its all instrumentals, kind of rock + pop + prog.....hell I don't know! :D). Push the colored keys for samples. FYI: for some reason, retail sites never offer samples of the BBs' music.

I was going to say The Joshua Tree, but now I'm thinking that U2's Achtung Baby would be an absolutely incredible multi-channel album if it were done properly (meaning not by the same person that does their concert dvds) :).

3 years ago Cocteau Twins discography was totaly remastered... what a missed opportunity to make them all MC, but if I have to choose one I go for Heaven or Las Vegas!!! =(

Wow, nice of nice choices listed here & quite a wide range as well. I'd love the Zeppelin, Supertramp and pleeeease, I Robot! What I find absent so far is a decent heavier disc...I thought about some early Dream Theater, but in the end, I'm gonna have to say Ænima by Tool...not because it's my favorite Tool disc, but because I think the MC would really be amazing.
