I DialNorm setting of -27db is an offset from -31db. So, it means it will be turned down by 4dB. Not the "yikes!" that you thought?

Its exactly the yikes I thought.

hence some people here saying "the bass is lacking", "things are buried or missing in the mix" etc..

stuff lowered by -27 dB Dial Norm isn't the same yikes as the +"x"dB Dial Norm of other BD-A's I've encountered (Soundgarden, for instance, or a host of Stereo only HFPA's where the Dolby stream is significantly louder/brighter/boosted in certain ways for the Dial Norm '+' boost than the PCM stream of the same mix/mastering/performance) but it is yikes-worthy because it potentially futzes with the original by lowering volume of certain aspects of the Dolby stream. why would you want to do that?

I don't profess to be technically-minded at all, far from it (can't you tell..!) but from what I can gather Dial Norm makes perfect sense in a movie soundtrack with dialogue etc.. Do you have any thoughts on how/why Dial Norm makes sense on a music-only disc?

To me Dial Norm is irrelevant on a music only disc. It tells the decoder to adjust the volume of the entire program (all channels equally) so if you have access you your volume control it is a non issue.

In practice, it is just like ReplayGain/iTunes SoundCheck which is actually quite useful if you shuffle music. The goal is to make all programming play at a similar volume resulting in less "reaching for the volume control'.

I don't get why people panic about Dial Norm, it is usually based on a misunderstanding of how it works (assuming it adjusts only the center channel or something).

thanks for the info Cheezmo. just so I'm sure where we're at with DialNorm (so I don't freak out again!)..

- it is pointless on a music disc
(something I've suspected for a while),
- it only affects all channels uniformly and not just one aspect of a Dolby/DTS stream,
- it is just like Apple's Sound Check
(which I hate fwiw.. it does something more to the music than just normalise levels.. there's an audibly detrimental effect to me, so I shut it off and for those albums/tracks where there's significantly higher/lower volume going on I just whack a few notches up or down for each album/track.)..

did i miss anything? is there any way in which Dial Norm could be bringing about any of the issues people here have reported about the 5.1 Vs the Stereo on this disc? some of the 2-channel HFPA BD-A's sound different to me in PCM than they do in Dolby True, beyond just volume differences.

Ok...I have moved to my new flat....and now I noticed that the speaker set-up had changed on my receiver.
I turned all speakers to "large" again and.....tadaaaaah....the mix is full of bass.
Oh yeah...now it sounds perfect....

I think you've pretty much nailed it. Your issue with Sound Check probably has to do with when it has to raise the volume where it probably applies some compression/limiting. (I think DialNorm only lowers the volume so shouldn't have that issue). Also Sound Check is applied on a track by track basis where I think you'll find most DVD's apply it uniformly to the entire "album".

really? if your setup is properly bass managed you shouldn't need to set your speakers to large, your sub(s) should take over where you've set the crossover with the other 5 speakers, no? or maybe this is more techno stuff I just don't get!

I'm dreading playing this Opeth BD-A over the weekend.. if it's got no bass or too much bass on playback I will probably freak out either way!

Edit: Sorry that was in respinse to IMachine! I'm tired tonight! :p

Technostuff beside...what shall I say....my ears tell me, that it solved the problem. :)
Now the mix is full!

excellent stuff! ta muchly :)

I had to abandon Audyssey for what I suspect are different technical reasons but similar sonic end results.. I guess I'm sensitive to all this compression/limiting jazzapalooza..?!

haha! there is a case to be had for "if it works, it works.. who cares!"

but you might consider recalibrating your sub and setting Xovers now you've moved in! Try the crawl test! it works! :p

So are there any True HD blu ray discs that you can also listen to, maybe the soundtrack of a film?

Yeah, I can honestly say I might have hundreds of discs with TrueHD tracks. My movie collection is quite big... hahaha They're all running fine with no issues whatsoever. In fact, Pale Communion is the only track that is making problems.
