I finally got a copy of this (Thanks to all who "volunteered" :D ) and I have to admit it's pretty impressive. Although I am not quite sure the reason for the Q8 and SQ versions of the tunes (probably a creative way to offer two variations on the processing), it's a worthy listening and most enjoyable.

One thing, though. It reminds me of the WKRP episode where Mr. Carlson comes into the studio and Johnny Fever is playing the intro to "Dogs". Mr. Carlson asks "Are those Dogs barking?"
I don't know why I remember that, but that's what happens when you get old! :D

Although I am not quite sure the reason for the Q8 and SQ versions of the tunes (probably a creative way to offer two variations on the processing)...

The Q8 represents the song line up on the original stereo 8 track with "Pigs on the Wing" combined into one track.
The SQ represents the song line up on the original stereo album (and any other format for that matter) with "Pigs on the Wing" separated into part 1 and part 2.

Thank you guys for all the kind words. This whole Animals project goes around the world - just a bit way too far for me. Never thought that it will come out that way.
To answer some questions:
All material is sourced from Animals' latest CD remaster (which was very bad and needs to improve - but compare for yourself)

Very bad in what way?

I know it's a bit more compressed than the last two or three remastered CD versions, but it's not a 'loudness wars' casualty.

And EQ-wise, the album has always been somewhat lifeless compared to earlier PF albums.

Latest Animals remaster is one of the worst of the whole Floyd catalogue. If you can compare this one with a good vinyl version or one of the better (earlier) CD versions on a well calibrated sound system
with "full-size" loudspeakers you will find out the difference. This late remaster seems to have no low end. It sounds so terribly flat. Although it's from '77 it has those awful 80's sound.
But please compare for yourself: Latest remaster versus Vinyl (look out for Pbthal's rip) versus latest Animals DVDA. It won't be a matter of taste.
Another example to check your ears: Compare the latest and the before last remaster of The Who - Who's Next. Have fun!!

No problem. So go for yourself and make one. If you need assistance then please PM me for a place where you can find all you need for.
Personally I would prefer a mint vinyl source.

Oh, that's a great offer. It would be nice to compare it with Pbthal's rip (and his one is downsampled to redbook).
So this idea opens the door to replace the "SQLP"-part on the "Double Feature"-Animals DVDA.
If you want to be a part of this project you are welcome !!

I just managed to DL this very recently and got around to listening it today (the Q8 version).
This is the best version of Animals I ever heard. Thanks, floydflush!
I also like the flow of the songs in the Q8 version better than that of the original Vinyl - with the whole Pigs on the wing in the beginning.

Compared to this, the 1992/94 "remaster" CD I have sounds like shyte.

Krazie, you should go first here on QQ to Forum/Legacy MultiChannel Sound & Systems/Discrete LP Formats/Well I Dreamed I Saw The Silver Shipships Flying... and scroll down.
You have to be logged in to see all the covers. The Meddle cover is there too - not without a cause. So stay tuned...

This thing has me totally freaked out. I consider myself a big Floyd fan - just saw the Rog here in Mpls. Brilliant. So I have this file, original ISO is 3.8 gb, broken down it becomes the dreaded AOB audio with the accompanied slide show. This is playable via Nero ShowTime on the old lap top, seemingly in "quad" on my system. There is no way possible it can decode but it surely sounds as though this is the case. My question is; does anyone know of a way to get this thing burned to dvd so I can really listen to all 1.6 gb the way it should be heard? This is a great recording of what is probably the Japanese lp busted up. It is CRYSTAL clear.
Help. Please.
Btw, the Atom Heart Mother quad is spectacular.

At first you should only look for conversions which were made from the British Q8 tape.
This one has the far better channel separation. There's a big difference to the SQ vinyl in several places.
Also some vocal, guitar and piano parts are placed at different positions.
Best conversions might be the DVD-A editions from AudioSpectrum and POTW until now. But who knows?
Might be the idea for a new topic: Best "available" conversions of old Q8, SQ, QS, RM ... tapes and LPs (at this forum without links of course).

Btw, the Atom Heart Mother quad is spectacular.
Indeed ;-)
I've just got hold of Cirlinca DVD audio solo and burnt the FLAC I had.
It is very discreet 4.0, a fantastic find.
The audio quality is not DSOTM-grade (low end and high frequencies are dodgy) but this is derived from an original quad source alright. I had a big smile on my face last night while listening to the old girl.
Thanks guys for the tips :)

John,
Yes, the Cirlinka program is nice. In fact, it is the solution. You can use it to burn bigger audio files to dvd-r's and listen to them on your home system. If you only have AOBs or an ISO, you can decode it with Foobar (it will play dvd-a files) and burn with whatever program you use. The Animals may be consumer produced, but it is an interesting version of the recording. I personally had the files for well over a year and couldn't even listen to them. Thanks to some advice from other audiophiles - problem solved.

is link for this still available anywhere? could someone please PM it to me if it's around. thanks!

As stated earlier in this thread there will NEVER be links for posted for such materials on QQ, pursuant to the forum rules. You're asking about something that was posted in 2008, meaning that version of the title is not likely to be found easily and has probably been re-done at least three more times by now. That is simply the nature of the upmix universe; things come and go, leaving hobbyists to figure out which one is better (different methods) or if simply the same one over again.
