I had mentioned earlier that surround treatment of "Dancing With Mr. D." is pretty disappointing compared to the rest of the album, but I'm starting to wonder if there's actually a mastering error in this track (proper credit belongs to @HomerJAU and @J. PUPSTER for noticing this first).

If you rip it to 8-channel .FLAC or .WAV and open it in Audacity, it appears there's no audio content in channels 5 & 6. However, boosting that pair 25 dB(!) reveals an isolated acoustic guitar track. I wonder if a fader accidentally got pushed down before they exported the mix or something?

It's still not spectacular, but definitely more interesting than before.
Authoring error?

As others have mentioned ceiling speakers pointing down are the ideal setup for Atmos. My PSBs work ok, but I doubt I'm getting the best Atmos results. My audio setup is also used for movies and the up firing does add some nice hight. Unfortunately there's no way I was going to make holes in my living room ceiling to accommodate Atmos speakers.

Here's what my upfiring PSB XA Atmos speakers look like with the grill removed. These can also be wall mounted.
There are many brands available for those with limited options - YMMV.

I do not have speakers in ceiling. I have speakers screwed into wood, fitted onto cd rack, pointing down. Do you have wardrobes or anything you could use?

This isn't even out yet and I'm already wanting "Let It Bleed" and "Sticky Fingers" in surround; about time the Stones got some surround Stones
I've been thinking about this and suspect they probably didn't do surround because of the rights issues where ABKCO owns the rights to the albums up to Sticky Fingers, and also has rights to Brown Sugar and Wild Horses. The Stones have no interest in making a box for someone else, and I suspect ABKCO lacks the rights to related materials they'd need to do a box. As the record industry contracts increasingly the money for nostalgia acts is in big boxes, and thus this is the first one they did. On the upside, if this sells they'll probably do some of the subsequent albums as well.

I'd love Some Girls!

It seems likely that the major labels (with the influence of Dolby) may be making a push towards Atmos given how this release has been presented. I do believe it's important to go vote on the Polls (and detail your opinions of the release), not only for the older OOP analog titles but these new ones also. That way if any industry insiders/engineers etc., look here for feedback they can get it. Provided they do give a damn. In other words, what are our target market listeners for multi-channel looking for as to how they should sound. Hopefully I'm not being naive. I also realize I need to step up my voting; it does take a bit of time and contemplation.
So far the response on the Poll for this one has generally been in the 8-9 range, which is pretty darn good.

If they are going to get me to bite at this price, it's going to be with Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers. Oh, and adding Honky Tonk Woman as a bonus track would be nice.

I actually like the thought of them doing this for their lesser-known records (which GHS is compared to the few that came before). I'd be down for a Black and Blue set, personally. But given how great Sympathy sounded on that old SACD release, my first choice would be to hear the rest of Beggars Banquet done the same way. Jigsaw Puzzle would be a hoot.

I’m ripping the Atmos tracks using makemkv. Anyone know a way to play them back in Atmos through JRiver?

You can try converting the MKV to M4A (MPEG Audio). I added that option to Music Media Helper yesterday in the Extract Audio from MKV tool:

https://www.quadraphonicquad.com/fo...-for-music-videos-mch-audio.22693/post-512298
I haven’t tested in JRiver but it works in Kodi 19 and Foobar with the ffmpeg component and latest ffmpeg release installed.

Othwise you could try creating MKA files from your MKV.

Edit: M4A files are easily tagged by most programs. MKA files have a complicated tagging structure with limited support by both tagging and playback software. M4A is recommended if JRiver can play them as Atmos (not just the Core TrueHD stream).

One has to wonder if the lack of a legit 5.1 mix that the user can select from the video menu is because the mix was paid for by the Atmos division of Dolby, and that is what they are pushing and that is what they want the public to adopt. The term "5.1" might be something they want to avoid going forward into Atmos as it might have bad connotations in the minds of the buying public.

This could be what we will see going forward in future box sets or surround mixes of other artists as Dolby tries to take the market by storm with Atmos.

Just a thought

I was wondering that as well

My only disappointment with this set is the absolutely crappy paper they printed the posters on, rendering them pretty useless. How much did they save on that maybe $1 per set? Wonder if the Japanese version is any better.
Oh yeah - listening in 5.1 this album sounds 100% better than my former best version - the Japan SACD. Not the most adventurous mix - turned up the rears a bit to obtain a satisfying result. I will refrain from rating the whole thing untill I listen to the bonus material on CD.
