SACD....by the numbers

Since January 1st of this year when 14,258 SACD were listed at hraudio.net, 108 new titles have since been added to online database. As usual, a number of SACD titles have not been added, such as the just released SACD of ELO's "Eldorado" from Mobile Fidelity or the upcoming 20th anniversary SHM-SACD release of Norah Jones' "Come Away With Me" from Japan Universal Music.

There have been no significant releases of SACDs in Hong Kong since the beginning of the year, although HK Sony Music reissued some of its past SACD releases, including Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue". Perhaps the lockdown due to COVID-19 is affecting new releases.

Hopefully, the rumored releases of the Van Halen SACDs (from MoFi in late 2022) and the rumored release of Quincy Jones' "The Dude" (on Intervention Records) will come true.

Has Dolby Atmos appeared on SACD yet?

It can't. SACD uses a different digital encoding system (DSD) than other formats (PCM). SACDs can't contain any of the lossless formats found on other disc media (MLP on DVD-A; Dolby TrueHD and Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS:X on Blu-ray/4K UHD Blu-ray). There is, however, at least one instance of a 5.1 downmix from an Atmos mix being released on SACD: Mr. Big's Lean Into It.

After 6 full months of 2022, there are now 14,528 SACD releases listed at hraudio.net. That's a gain of 270 new SACD releases in 6 months (14,258 SACD releases were listed at hraudio.net on January 1, 2022). However, not all new SACD are listed at hraudio.net. For example, PS Audio's music label, Octave Records, has at least 15 SACD titles that are not listed and are not reflected in the above total.

There were relatively few SACDs released in Hong Kong, although HK Universal Music did released its first 4 classical music SACD titles (which were just added to hraudio.net). Aside from those 4 SACD titles, there were only 20 other SACD releases over there.

In total, there were close to 300 new SACD releases for the first 6 months of 2022. At that rate of releases, there may be 600 new SACD (or more) releases for this year. There are a number of new, upcoming SACD releases that have yet to be accounted for....Michael Jackson's "Thriller" on MoFi, the first 6 Van Halen studio albums on MoFi, the rest of the Eagles studio albums on MoFi, jazz SACDs from Art Pepper, Ornette Coleman, Bill Evans from Craft Recordings, Japan Sony Music's "Toto IV" SACD reissue, Joe Jackson's "Summer in the City" live album on SACD, an increasing number of J-pop SACD titles, etc.

With 3 1/2 months left in 2022, the tally at hraudio.net already surpassed a 400 title increase since the beginning of this year. There is a very good chance that 2022's total new releases will surpass that of 2021.

Btw, Japan Universal Music just announced a 40+ titles reissue campaign that see many classical music SACD titles on the Deutsche Grammophon and the Decca labels. There is also a smaller reissue campaign for J-pop SACD titles.

Back in the day of Broadway show tunes & original cast albums.
Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf could get my younger siblings going.

Which is ALL THE MORE REASON all of Streisand's early masterpieces deserve the hi res SACD treatment. And IMPEX records has close ties with SONY as they've released Bennett/Brubeck LIVE in Washington D.C. and the early Sinatra classic [on Columbia] SING & DANCE WITH FRANK SINATRA on Stereo SACD.

IMPEX also released its first Multi~CH SACD recently: Patricia Barber's CLIQUE. Hopefully, Streisand's Multi~CH Columbia albums will also be included!

BTW, My mother and her BFF were fortunate to see Streisand on Broadway in FUNNY GIRL!

On November 2, Japan Universal Music will unleash 50 classical music releases on SHM-SACD (i.e. stereo single layer SACD) on the Deutsch Grammophon (DG) and Decca labels, which will be followed with a 21 title J-pop "Best of" SACD compilation reissue campaign in the middle of November. Still possible for the last three months of 2022....Michael Jackson's "Thriller" on MoFi, the first 6 Van Halen studio albums on MoFi, the last 2 Eagles studio albums on MoFi, Analogue Production's Steely Dan "Can't Buy A Thrill" SACD, Barbra Streisand's "Live At Bon Soir" SACD, etc.

The above October 2, 2022 estimate of 625 new SACD releases worldwide for 2022 may now be an underestimate. November 2022 may be turning out to be a month with over 100 new SACD releases as the first week already see....

• Japan Universal Music is releasing 50 classical music titles on SHM-SACD (i.e. stereo single layer SACD) on the Deutsch Grammophon (DG) and Decca labels.
• Hong Kong Universal Music is releasing 8 titles on SHM-SACD.
• Dutton Vocalion releasing Mac Davis, REO Speedwagon, and Ted Nugent on 3 separate multichannel hybrid SACD releases.

To date, there have been well over 500 new SACD releases worldwide for 2022. Later this month....

• Japan Universal Music is releasing 18 J-pop "Best of" compilation SACDs on November 16.
• MoFi has scheduled the Eagles' "Hotel California" and "The Long Run" SACDs for release on November 25

Michael Jackson's "Thriller" on MoFi SACD is still a possibility for a November 2022 release. Then there are a lot of classical SACD releases from Fone, BIS, etc.

For December, SACDs from Steely Dan? Barbara Streisand? Van Halen?

For some reason, they don’t like multichannel releases. They do sound clean, but pretty simple production values. It’s worth being picky here.

Within the last week or so, hraudio.net has updated its count of SACDs. As of this post, there are now 14,782 SACD releases listed at hraudio.net. When compared to the number of SACD releases listed on January 1, 2022 (14,258), that represent an addition of 524 new releases in 2022. However, it looks like hraudio.net have yet to include the 50 classical SHM-SACDs just released by Japan Universal Music, the Analogue Productions Steely Dan SACD titles ("Two Against Nature" and "Everything Must Go" have shipped), almost all of PS Audio's Octave Records SACD releases, the SACDs to the last 2 Eagles studio albums, etc.

In 2020, the total number of new SACD releases worldwide was 600....in 2021, it was 625. With 2022 coming to an end, we will be looking at 625 new SACD releases worldwide in the rearview mirror; the total will be closer to 700 for 2022.

At the beginning of 2022, there were 14,258 SACD releases listed on hraudio.net. By January 1, 2023, that number has grown to 14,846 releases, which represented an increase of 588 new SACD releases on that website for 2022.

However, a number of new SACD releases weren't documented on hraudio.net. For example, Analogue Productions' SACDs of Steely Dan's "Two Against Nature" and "Everything Must Go". Or the 50 classical SHM-SACD reissues (on the Deutsche Grammophon and Decca labels) from Japan Universal Music, released in November 2022.
