Thank You Perppy for the clarificarion, had me scouring interwebz to order lol

Back to Simple Minds...........oh with this new release coming out, Snood went to try to find the old DVD-A releases - and went :yikes on the prices they wanted on Once Upon a Time and New Gold Dream

Even looked on Discogs........

So put a want in on discogs a couple weeks ago then got email that someone had listed for sale Once Upon a Time DVD-A for 25 bux NRMT/MT - 31 all together with shipping , Snood was like nah no way gotta be diff version, but took a chance.

Got it earlier this week and it is the real deal in Mint as advertised. Gonna listen to sometime this week :51banana:

Now can only hope to find Dream that cheap

Looking forward to Sparkle tho - already preordered.

Checked SACD.net they have both Once and New listed as Stereo only @:

Yup - The Simple Minds SACDs of New Gold Dream and Once Upon a Time are stereo only.

I still have a copy of the (stereo only) New Gold Dream sacd for sale...

i do have both DVDAs but haven't listened since purchase. i've listened and liked lots of new wave back in 80th
but now can't stand either music or sound. 80th recordings really pretty bad.
got latest BD-A FFT, albeit 5.1 mix isn't bad, the sound absolutely don't liked. sort of too artificial. so i'm not sure if i'll bite on this one.

I'm not sure what the big deal is here with not liking the sound quality of 80's music. You can do much worse with the compresses crap coming out today.

Sorry to hear it's "Stereo" only. :(

Not sure if you've heard either of these discs you're searching for but "New Gold Dream" is pretty laid back and dreamy (Whereas, their next record, "Sparkle in the Rain", mostly kicks ass...rocks out with added keys). It ("New Gold Dream") contains some great tracks but I always felt the bass and bass guitar was jacked up too high. I was hoping they would have corrected this with the DVD-A surround mix but they did not. What is great about "Once Upon a Time" (which rocks even harder with a bit less keyboard action) is that a couple of the tracks in 5.1 are extended. I'm not too sure about the stereo tracks because I only played them once or twice. :)

You have a valid point about contemporary music being compressed..no doubt...but that's not the comparison that is usually relevant in hi rez discs...take a disc like aqualung...from the early 70's(1971)..it doesn't have the reverb and synth problems of 80's music...music from the 60's and 70's don't have this problem...Steven Wilson is one of the few in the business that can bring vintage material to life and make it sound impressive...so look at aqualung vs Songs From The Big Chair...aqualung is easily the better sounding disc...and Wilson did both of these...the difference is the source material...

synthetic sound and overloud compression - both are bad for me.
last CDs i bought was 20-bit remastered Ozzy's solo albums, it was second half of 90th and sound was terrible.
since then i gave up on CDs and purchased only some classical on EMI/Angel when it contains matrixed stream
and some other Dolby Surround encoded just out of curiosity.
i guess there still fans of new wave genre but i wish instead of remixing new wave bands, SW would do even Ozzy's catalogue.

But that's not to say that the song selection is worse with "Songs From The Big Chair". I'd rather have repeated listenings to that than "Aqualung", but that's my preference. Now, "Songs From The Wood"? That's a different story! ;)

Sabbath!

Everyone has their own tastes in music, and certain albums or all of them, by a certain artist. I would rather see Steven mix a little of everything. I feel when he goes into the studio to mix a particular artists album(s) in surround, he gains a level of appreciation, awareness, picks up on certain elements and can use them in his future recordings, whether as an artist, producer or sound mixer. Like an education. It's a win-win. :)

That's me - I wish he would spread his wings and not focus on a single artist...but maybe the very best of several artists.

Perpendicular
perhaps you're right, personal approach to particular artists/musical genre obviously has impact, but i'm trying to be
objective as much as possible. for example almost nothing from AIX Records what i can regard among my faves, but
from technical point of view, recording > mixing > final product... they are outstanding.
as pointed out Clint Eastwood, very much depends on source material. SW is brilliant in the field but even he cannot
jump over his own head.

You don't understand what I'm saying...I too prefer a lot of the music content from sources like Big Chair..I'm talking about the sound quality of 80's music and the problems it creates...to be candid I could use a break from Tull and Yes and I'd prefer more hi rez material like Big Chair and Reckless...I'd like more rock than prog music...although I do like much of that genre...I'd love more 60's and 70's music...rock...Motown...even disco(yes I said the D word)...

i'm wondering if they have multis, particularly for first album, at all?
they recorded and mixed it in 2 days. could be mixing was done "on fly" during the recording,
like this was done with plenty of classical music :)

and yes! i would love to have all old Sabbath in 5.1
seems here at QQ only two of us who loves this band (y)

I do understand and I'm in agreement with your last Post.(y) :)

Are you sure you don't mean "New Gold Dream"? The title track in particular is longer and has some dramatic differences from the original mix/edit.

No. "Once Upon A Time" is extended. I can't remember which other song is different. I'll have to listen to it again later on today but I think it's either "Ghost Dancing" or "Oh Jungleland". I know the original album so well from playing it so much.

As far as NEW GOLD DREAM, a lot of the songs sound different to me because this is what can happen when you mix to more than two channels. Though, I do know of the extra bonus track at the end, "In Every Heaven". :)
