Based upon Kal's suggestions, I have been looking at subs with built in eq software, or similar, to set up my sub. The ones from SVS are too big to fit my layout, so I have been looking at Velodyne Optimum 12; Paradigm Monitor 12, Ultra Cube 12, or DSP 3200 (all come with an additional purchase of a bass management program and accessories, as well as the sister company Martin Logan) and the Martin Logan Dynamo 1500X. All review very well, but so far I like the Martin Logan the best because of the all around performace of outstanding music and movie bass reproduction. Any and all opinions are welcome and appreciated. Personal experience is especially welcome! I am not hell bent on any particular brand or size (assuming it performs well for both movies and music) and maintain an open mind. I am searching for the best I can get within budget parameters for a single sub, as of now, with that budget being as far under $1500 I can go. My max dimensions are <17" wide, <22" tall, and <21" deep. I prefer a black color, and a warranty, but the right price could persuade me otherwise. Again, all options are open, so please feel free to interject your opinion.

I think I prefer the Rythmik E15 or the Martin Logan Dynamo 1500X. They are both sealed subs, 15" woofers but in a very compact package that fits where I want it to go. I am looking at either of these as a hybrid of sorts, with emphasis on music first (the reason I am on this site as well as the rest of you). Going with generalizations, the sealed subs tend to be smaller and tighter, but these also go pretty low for some HT application as well. I have studied many reviews of both, and although neither excel to the top of either of the 2 uses (music and HT) they are the best hybrids I can find for range, sound quality, adjustability (eq built in or room correction), and size. Maybe I am missing something or some brand, but I have looked at so many, I narrowed it down to these 2. They are both in the high end of what I wanted to spend, and actually over, but no need to get cheap now. I am not sure how easily I can adjust the Rythmik since it is manual, as I basically know nothing about it doing such things, and prefer not to invest any more time into doing the research and investing of time or money to buy any more equipment to analyze things. Placement options don't really exist, so I need to do the best with where I can fit it. However, I know that customer service on any of these is top notch, according to my phone calls and others' reviews, so I think their help will make up for my lack of options and knowledge. The ML has all this built in and will automatically do it for me. My AVR has the same thing for my other speakers, not the sub, but I have already adjusted that because I didn't like the eq it did. So I am torn as to which way to go. I honestly don't know which is better and how easily I will be able to tweak, if I even need to. Regardless, both are a substantial upgrade and look forward to the purchase of either. I know my ears determine a lot, but please understand that I have never fine tuned anything like this manually, other than tweaking the auto setting of my MCACC's eq. I don't want to be second guessing what I am missing (if anything) but rather err on the side of caution. In other words, I think I would rather have the eq even if it ultimately does nothing than not have it and not know what I screwed up, potentially. Maybe I am worrying too much, so advice is once again appreciated. I am leaning towards the sealed subs because of size limitations and supposed clarity, and was looking for the increased driver size to get a bit lower like a ported typically accomplishes.

I need to add the SVS SB13Ultra into this mix as it also specs out to what I want. This one is definitely more than I wanted to spend, but it may very well be the best of the three I have listed. I excluded this earlier because of the higher price, but the reviews have persuaded me to reconsider it. Still not sure which way to go, but I have read nothing but good things about SVS, and that does influence a bit of prejudice towards them. Once again, I appreciate your input.

Just checking to see if anyone has the Rythmik E15 sub or the SVS SB13 Ultra sub. I am 99% certain I am going to get one of these. I have not ruled out the Martin Logan Dynamo 1500X yet, as I may have a chance at getting one at a great discount, if I get lucky. Regardless, any real world experience on any of those 3 would be appreciated. Once again, thanks for all the input so far! I have absolutely shot my budget to hell with trying to add a sub, as they are a lot more than I thought for a good one--just like everything else, but I was hoping I could cheat here. I was wrong.

I have looked at that one, but am looking at larger cones for deeper bass for ht use as well. I am still want a music first sub, but I need it for ht also, so there has to be some compromises. How does that Rel or similarly priced ones compare to the models I said I was interested in? I am still looking for people that actually own them and use them so I can get their opinion instead of random ones and reviews by experts that don't live in my house.

Well I've been humbled. Just when you think you know about something-oh well, back to school.

I assume you are poking fun at my ignorance? I will take it as that and not be offended. I am learning new things, some of which may be common knowledge to others here, but not necessarily to everyone, which is why I ask questions. I am willing to make mistakes, sound clueless, and be the idiot in the room (see sig below) if it will help me gain the knowledge and information I am seeking. That being said, perhaps there are things I have knowledge of others do not possess, and I am willing to share that where applicable, as well. This site is certainly not the best place for me to shine, but it doesn't mean I can't offer educated and informed, albeit not as experienced as most here, opinions and facts I have ascertained through my foray into this wonderful world of surround music and the corresponding hardware, accessories, etc. But I digress...I only come here seeking knowledge, things they wouldn't teach me of in college. All help is truly appreciated, and I do respect insights and opinions, but understand they are only that. So once again, I am truly thankful for the responses posted to my inquiries.

I just ordered a pair of SVS SB-2000 12" sealed subs. After many conversations with Ed, his fantastic attention to each and every question or comment I had, this was an easy choice. For anyone on the fence, they are the real deal with customer service well before a sale. Trust me, I am a pain in the ass when it comes to spending my money. There is a method to my madness and he pleasantly obliged me. Not just email but I actualy spoke to him, and will again to make sure everything works as intended. The question I beg to ask is why aren't reps of every company competing for our hard earned money like this? In defense of others, I also emailed and or spoke to reps from Velodyne and Rythmik, but none except maybe Rythmik, were even close to SVS. Just thought they deserved mention. I wanted to give credit when and where due. I have the last piece of my puzzle on the way and if it is half as good as I read, I will look like the Joker with a smile on my face for weeks to come! Thanks again to everyone who has constructively aided in this process for me, I truly appreciate the insights and guidance. I will folow up once everything is in place and correctly working. I can't wait!
