Hello all.
Just found this site after searching for a company/service that can convert 8tack quad tapes to DVD. No luck yet. I figured QQ it might be a good resource for all things surround sound anyway. As mentioned earlier, I'm trying to find a service that can convert 8track quads to DVD (or Blu-ray).I have Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark and Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hair (orig Broadway musical on RCA) and the Free Design Kites Are Fun 4 channel LP to work on. All Quad.
Aside from that, I have looked in on the threads from time to time. There's a lot of interesting info on here and appreciate what you guys post!

First, welcome to the money pit!

Second, I doubt if such a service exists, but this IS a good place to start. I digitize some analog material with a pretty cheap audio editor/recorder/ripper called Goldwave, which will pretty much do everything your soundcard will allow.

I haven’t tried quad to DVD, but I’ve mastered a handful of DVDs and BDs using Roxio.

Your projects sound very DIY, but most of the software isn’t too complicated, so it seems doable. Good luck, and keep us posted!

Hello everyone.
Just looked and I signed up to be a member here 3 years ago and have never posted. I guess it’s about time.

I think I remember finding this place while looking around for Pink Floyd stuff online. Already had the Floyd Immersion boxes and then one day I found Roxy Music -Avalon in SACD at a used shop for 15 bucks, and I’ve been hunting down surround discs ever since.

Thanks to all the cool people on here, I’ve found a few bargains here and there, bought some titles I probably wouldn’t have before, and this site now gets checked daily, even though I never post anything.

Thanks for allowing me to lurk and check stuff out. Keep up the good work!
"Hello and welcome! It's great to see you finally posting after being a member for three years. It's always exciting to connect with fellow music enthusiasts, especially when it comes to finding great deals and discovering new titles.

This thread replaces the old "New Members Only!! (Members who have never posted)" thread, which got to be a little on the LARGE side!

Hi there! New user drotelli1 here. I have an Onkyo NR-636 5.1/7.1 surround AVR. I’ve been collecting 5.1 DVD-As and Blu-Rays for a few years now. Mostly the awesome Jethro Tull 40th anniversary box sets. (Wish I knew about them back when they first came out. A few of them cost me a fortune.) Also been buying 5.1 concert DVDs for a couple years. Love the Eagles “farewell” tours concerts. I recently bought a Sony X800M2 player so I could play SACDs as well as everything else. I am really happy with that player. I bought the 5.1 SACD of DSOTM and it sounds just incredible. I just recently starting streaming music, including Spatial Audio and Hi-Res Lostless, from Apple Music via my Apple TV 4K streaming device connected to my AVR. I mostly listen to classic rock (60s and 70s), Classical music, and Jazz. One of my friends (“Elroy”) turned me on to this group. I look forward to learning more about Quad and Surround, and keeping up with all the relevant news.

Hi - I’m new to the forum. I have recently changed from a Sony AVR with KEF speakers, to a Sony HT-A7000 due to a living room redecoration makeover which meant No Cables and No More Speakers hence the soundbar. Sadly I’ve now found it impossible to play my SACD collection (I’ve kept my Sony Blu-Ray player). I also have a Sony XR-A55 Bravia OLED TV, an Audio Technica turntable, and now a newly added WiiM Pro. I’ve joined the forum to see if anyone can help me find a way to get LPCM through to actually play my SACDs! Failing that, does anyone have any idea where I could buy good DSD downloads - I really miss playing Dark Side of the Moon!

Hi everyone. I found my way to this group as I was the neighbor of Peter Scheiber, the inventor of surround sound. When we moved across the street from him in Bloomington Indiana we met and he shared his story. I even got to hold his Grammy which sat in the bedroom of his unfinished home. My wife and I took care of him during his last years. We have now purchased his former home and are in the process of remodeling it and realizing his vision. I was able to salvage some of his old equipment from his time with Fosgate and I also have a stack of the original hand drawn schematics of the circuit designs that became surround sound. Currently figuring out the best way to honor his legacy. His story is even more sad than what you know if you saw how he lived. I thought this group, if any, would appreciate the value of holding his original work.

A remarkable introduction. Certainly any information you can share will be most appreciated on the forum. I can't place the name of the member but someone here is creating a literal library of Jim Fosgate's for the university he works for. It would be great to do the same thing with Scheiber.

Back in 1970 (???) there was an article I read titled Hafler vs Scheiber: 4 channels on Disc. It intrigued me enough to hook a rear speaker in the differencing mode to experience "surround sound". I've been hooked ever since.

Looking forward to your future posts!!

Hi,

I’m Goodtunes Dave from Denver, Colorado. I’ve been following this site for a few months and it seems packed with detailed knowledge. Surround music, to me, changes the way I hear music in ways I never new possible. Old tracks I used to listen to in stereo sound “new” in surround. I have kids in their 30’s and it’s a shame they don’t appreciate what this can do to the music they listen to.

I’ve been using Plex for a few years to store movies for easy access. Over the winter I investigated ways to get surround sound media onto Plex, for the same easy access. My goal is to play surround music of all media types on Plex and have it sound just like playing it from the native media. So far I’ve had good success with the biggest effort put into SACDs. I’m slowly collecting media and putting it into Plex. I still have issues off and on and hope this site has some ways to get past those issues. The most recent is with the Rhino quadios released this Summer. I ripped them to MKV files, but they only play stereo. I’ll investigate the forum further for clues to get past this.

Thank you for letting me be part of this group. I look forward to learning all that I can and getting to know many of you as time rolls along.

Greetings! I'm new because I finally got a surround system set up after a long drought. I remember Quad albums from my youth, and always loved them- and then I've listened to 5.1 Surround mixes of albums on and off over the years, but now with my own setup, I'm rediscovering this world. Similar to Goodtunes in that:

I'm having trouble listening to some formats via my setup, and there's precious little info on what's happening and why. (For me, specifically, multichannel FLAC files keep playing as stereo files via my HDMI setup from computer to receiver.) Let me know if you find anything, and vice-versa!

My immediate problem was specific to the recent Rhino quadios that came out. I created MKV files from the Blu Ray discs using FLAC. Like you, they would only play in stereo. It is the only time I’ve had this problem. My breakthrough came from a member’s advice to use Music Media Helper. You can create an MKV file from the Blu Ray, using MakeMKV, and then extract the quad files from the MKV file using Music Media Helper. Be sure to tag the songs using the program. It was pretty easy to figure out. Don’t hesitate to post questions about issues you are having. It’s best to be as specific as you can. Good luck, and welcome.

First, welcome aboard, and watch your wallet. There are pickpockets around here!

Second, what is your receiver, and how is ir set up?

Hello All-

Just joined, although I've enjoyed quad/surround for stereo replay off and on since the Dynaco days. That means I've got several options on hand to use in upgrading my basement 2-channel listening space - but only 6.5' ceilings so no Atmos, thank you.

What prompted me to join is that, over several moves, I seem to have lost the manual for my Fosgate Audionics Model Five processor - I still have the remote, fortunately. Hopefully someone here can provide a PDF or answer some questions. Although I have numerous SQ/QS matrix recorded LPs, I also want to use it to feed CD and streamed content to rear speakers for ambience recovery without running the front channels through it.

Other than that I'm 79 yo long-time audiophile and live in Massachusetts, USA.

Welcome! this is a great group!

You can use Atmos with low ceilings because anything that decodes atmos can probably digitally delay the ceiling speakers. Not sayin you should do it but you could if you wanted to.

We have several Fosgate experts here (not I) I think this is one of the most likely places to find the manual you are looking for.

Hi all from Oz, I'm assuming it's mostly yanks on this forum.
I started down the mult-channel path like many with Dolby Pro logic with my HT setup.
i've been collecting records since 1970 and always tried to get the QS/SQ ones when possible. I have over 100 quad LPs now.
I didn't get into the quad stuff in the 70s, I couldn't afford it and by the time I could start buying serious gear the quad fad was over.
Along came DTS CDs and with my DTS millenium (which I unfortuately sold :-( , bad mistake ) I listened to hirez multi-channel music which made me go down the quad/5.1 music path. I also have a Fosgate decoder which I see a few members know about, good, I may need their help.
I'm currently rebuilding my two setups to both cater for all forms of quad, one being retro and one hirez quad.
Over the last few years I've been collecting a quad cassette deck (Tascam 234), quad R2R deck (TEAC A3440), quad R2R tapes, SQ/QS/CD-4 records and many many decodersincluding Sony, Fosgate and JVC.
My retro system will be using a Technics 8700X 4ch receiver with CD-4 input and Technics TT and Technics CD4 cart.
My hirez system is quad ESL speakers, Nelson Pass amps with a Marantz preamp, Teac A3440 R2R, Denon 2900 SACD multi player and a Dual turntable 1219 with Shure M24H (CD4 cart) cart using a JVC decoder. Plus lots more gear.
Hopefully more to talk about later in the year.
See me on www.youtube.com/@moggyshifiantics if interested, I repair gear as well. I've been a technician/engineer for all my working life, I love it.
