Quite a haul this morning:

Talking Heads "'77" CD+DVD (new)
Talking Heads "Fear of Music" CD+DVD (new)
Talking Heads "Speaking in Tongues" CD+DVD (new)
Travis & Fripp "Follow" CD+DVD (new)
R.E.M. "Green" CD+DVD (second hand)

...bit worried about the Green DVD; it has that horrible "misting" on it that sometimes indicates that it will have reliability problems :( Wont know for sure until I get chance to play it tonight.

someone referred to this mistiness on a forum as "out-gassing".

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/topic/211222-cloudy-or-milky-appearance-on-dvd-surface-problem/

I've copied & pasted their post here:

"The chemical material used in the acrylic coating of the DVD is reacting to the chemical material used in the DVD cases and/or sleeves of the storage albums. Years ago, when I was in retail, we had major problems with our rental DVDs becoming "cloudy" when placed in the then-new Alpha-brand "Secure Cases". Some of the cases had a slightly "wet", or "greasy" feel to them when they were new. Turns out it was literally a faint chemical residue that was interacting with the chemical make-up of the DVDs' coating, causing them to become "cloudy". After a while, several of them were unplayable. If it was caught early enough, washing and/or buffing would help. Otherwise, they became useless. We had quite a time getting Alpha to replace the cases AND the discs, but they eventually admitted there WAS a problem with the materials used in some of the cases.

I've had similar incidents with CDs stored in vinyl-paged albums. It's important to look for "acid-free" or PVC-free products, just as photo album manufacturers similarly advertise their products. The surfaces of photos can be damaged the same way as DVDs.

It's quite ironic that these products, designed to protect the DVDs, may actually ruin them.

P.S. I also had a similar problem with laserdiscs, although it wasn't the surface of the discs that was affected. Some of my LD covers were ruined after being placed in "protective" poly sleeves. The sleeves' chemicals literally dissolved the ink right on the covers, leaving a sticky mess. It took a while for it to occur, but by the time I noticed the problem, it was too late for many of my LDs.

I should be receiving my " Green " disc today, too. ( These REM discs, are causing me stress & anxiety, what with my Out Of Time, drama ! )

Thanks Fred!

...so my DVD is out-gassing? ...sounds like a form of flatulance. I do hope it doesn't smell

I got it cheap (for Green) so if it plays I may just take a "security" copy rather than returning it for a refund and keep an eye out for another cheap one.

Dixie - all of the other R.E.M. discs I have are fine, it's just this DVD and I don't know yet if it'll cause problems playing.

My Gentle Giant 'Interview' DVD-A was cracked when I removed it from the case, its unplayable !
Sending it back to Europe for a hopeful replacement, not holding my breath !
Free Hand plays ok, the 4.1 mix is not bad.

You're not going to believe this Neil ( although, you probably will, given Fredblue's / Adam's post ! ) I've just played through " Monster " with no probs, but just loaded " Green " and it won't read the disc, says " unknown ", tried again, just keeps saying loading. ( had to eject it )
There's a mist like discolouration on the disc, like my " Out Of Time " disc. Can't see this one playing ! Very likely, an Amazon return !! ? :(:howl

MEGA PI**ED OFF !!! :howl:howl:howl(n)(n)(n)

How annoying! At least Amazon are good with returns. Wondering what I'll find when I try to play mine tonight...

Talking of annoying I just found out that I'm being stung for import duty on a Tomita disc I got shipped from Japan. The extra VAT and the post office's "transactional charge" (aka "rip off that you can do nothing about") is going to cost me more than the damned disc. Grrrrrrrr.

I've just posted back to Amazon. ( They are a very good company ! ) Hope you don't have the same problem ! I was really looking forward to listening to "Green". Thinking about it....the colour green was regarded as unlucky by my mom....
I've been stung by customs charges quite a few times now ! ( I wonder if i'll get stung, with the forthcoming BD-A titles ??? )

Forgotten, that I've got two more REM discs to be delivered, one from the US & one from Germany.....that should be fun, should they need to be returned ??

I may have gotten away with this; I washed the disc in a mild detergent solution, rinsed it and "buffed" it and the cloudiness has disappeared completely. I guess if it was a residue on the surface it could have come from anywhere, maybe even inside of the previous owner's player.

It plays fine too, sounds great. The mix is waaaaaaaaaaay better than Monster. :)

...will obviously keep an eye on it, though. Thanks for the info, Fred.

Did you try playing the disc, before washing it, Neil ?
