I wonder if what we are seeing here (and with the SDE surround series) is what I predicted a few years ago: That as the market for physical releases decreased, that those of us interested in surround would become more of a viable niche still worth pursuing. Even if we are just a few-thousand strong, we might be the biggest market for physical discs remaining.

Me thinks I might have solved the mystery of which album is quad on the Atlantic label...., well maybe.

I noticed a June 23rd release date for a package set for Charles Mingus , on the Rhino's website.
Illustrated is the "Quadradisc of Mingus Moves" ?

If so ...that's a good one to get , as far as I'm concerned .

Doobie Brothers Quadio type EQ? - I hope not, I don't see the justification for doing additional EQ to the Quad masters.

50 year old tapes will often need EQ work. It is a matter of the taste of the mastering person on if it turns out well or not. Like Purple's Machine Head likely needs the top end sprinkled just lightly, B$B needs the bass fine tuned to perfection.

I'm telling myself that we are getting two out of the three: Alice, Sabbath, Purple. I'm staying optimistic it won't be a couple of hitless albums to hold us over for another 4-5 f'in years, but true iconic, evergreen, masterworks.

I'm thinking that the probability might be Alice OR Sabbath if given Purple, but not Alice AND Sabbath. (Mind you I took Probability and Statistics three times and I'm still somewhat confused.)

Rhino has ZZ Top's catalog from First Album to Recycler. Never found the quad Tres Hombres. Need to research that...
You will find it, even if a good production dub for consumer Reels/8-Tracks. The tough part might be getting it cleared. It's a cool one with nice fidelity and strong separation.

Happy hunting. Be aware that the diagonal pan for drums is intended, just keep the vocals front and the call-response f-b.

edit: be aware that both Q8 and Q4 were kinda dull on top end, don't know if that was a duplication problem (could be for the Q8 since other yellow Ampex-duped cart suffer the same fate, but for Q4 this was strange) or if the quad master reel need a sparkle here and there to make it shine.

Re: The Doobie Brothers Quadio EQ - AFAIK, the same EQ was applied to all 4 albums (upper midrange cut & treble boost), this wasn't done on the CD-4s of these albums.

Analog tapes can have small treble losses for a variety of reasons, I have no problem with using EQ and compensating for those losses, but doing other EQ, IMHO, that crosses the line between restoration and enhancement, I hope these new Quadios are restored only.

If these new Quadios are enhanced, it isn't a dealbreaker for me.

Even the stereo mix master of "Tres Hombres" suffers from some dullness, as the speakers used during the mixing must have been on the bright side, and resulted in the slight lack of treble - this has been previously reported on by remastering engineers. I would not be surprised if that quad mix was done at the same studio and nearly the same time.
