Looking forward to reports on these latest 6 once people get a chance to hear them could be soon for European buyers I would think.
do you want the truth or something beautiful...
seriously, i'll go through them all with a fine-toothed comb this weekend but on the basis of one late night playthrough last night apiece of Giant Box, Argent's "In Deep" and the Blood Sweat & Tears 2-fer i'm very happy indeed.
so far these three discs came across in all their unvarnished/untampered-with beauty as gloriously as i could have hoped for.
with a sympathetic hand on the mastering controls, as always with Dutton Vocalion's Quad releases, what's on the tapes comes right on through, for better or worse.
now that is very often for the better, though i ought to mention both "In Deep" and "Mirror Image" start out kinda splashy and a bit saturated but i feel that's inherent in the actual recordings for both those individual tracks ("God Gave Rock & Roll To You" & "Tell Me That I'm Wrong") because they always sounded that way both in Stereo and on the Quad LPs and Q8s were also kinda wooly with some distortion too.
however neither opener on those albums is representative of the fidelity once the music gathers momentum the sound quality on the pair of them just gets better and better!
the BS&T 2-fer in particular has some absolutely incredible sounding tracks, totally wiping the floor with the old Q8s and SQ LPs, time and again i was picking out gorgeous details on "Mirror Image" & "New City" in particular.
also, it was so nice to hear those piano laden Argent tracks without my old Q8's tape wobble or the SQ LPs wow & flutter.. honestly it felt like the disc really wanted cranking more than i could at that time of night but i intend to give it a right royal whack of the wick at full pelt tomorrow, so standby for more fulsome feedback!
