My Apple TV 4K 64GB arrived yesterday. Looking forward to setting it up. My freind has one and I can see that every app I had on the Amazon Fire Cube I can get on the Apple. Too bad you can't get every app on the Fire Cube, then people wouldn't have to double dip for an upgrade. So now with the Apple I will be able to go back and forth between Apple Music and Tidal for my Atmos streaming.

yes they are both there and sound good!
i think i prefer The Doors track in Atmos to the DVD-Audio tbh, the effects are cool πŸ™‚
i am way curious how Apple goes about their ATMOS mixes, any insightful Infos available?

And do certain countries receive a different mix/stream? I have seen others like Life in surround really digging Tiny music in ATMOS, and I trust his ears, so we are hearing something radically different on that one. His reviews are always stellar, and I buy according to his reviews.

So far many are gems, but there are some real duds

Ie Bohemian Rhapsody is off a bit in beginning, but by the time it gets to the rock section, Freddie's vocals all but fade away. It is an abomination

STP-Tiny music is another mess, vocals are all but gone. The mix is very muted, esp on vocals

Kraftwerk sounds stellar, but it is direct from the artist/company mix I assume? No tinkering about by Apple music?

Apple has assured me they are not using software to up the ATMOS, but it is all done by pros in a studio. But I call BS on the ones I mention because no self-respecting engineer would ever release messes like that.

i am a tad afraid to dive any deeper into their so-called "ATMOS" catalog.

Not to mention the constant crashing Apple does if I am adding tracks to the queue. It clears the list after I may have spent over an hour making one. It crashes like that 5xs a day or more.

Yet overall Apple has a near-stellar collection of things found nowhere else. But they have work to do

Do the other services like Tidal have these issues as well?

Cheers

Gabriel Lundh offers a mixer's take on Tidal's and Apple's respective approaches to Atmos in an interview just posted at IAA:
What are your thoughts on Apple and Tidal’s Atmos streaming platforms? Do you see this as ultimately becoming a mainstream success, unlike past attempts to market surround music?

As mentioned earlier, I really think Dolby Atmos is the future of music. I think this because it’s the first time that we as producers and engineers can deliver the information needed for manufacturers to create amazing experiences for the listeners. Before, trying to make bigger and immersive experiences from stereo audio files was just guess work for the manufacturers, with upscaling and fake 3D audio images. Now, with Dolby Atmos, they know the artist’s intent and can place the tracks according to the vision from the artist.

That being said, the platforms have done it differently. Tidal took on the Dolby ecosystem and actually uses the format as Dolby intended with the binaural render modes and Dolby’s binaural engine. Apple however, took the extra step and made their own engine. This Spatial engine sounds fantastic, but it comes with some consequences.

The Spatial engine overlooks the binaural render modes and goes straight to trying to emulate the speaker mix in a binaural environment. As the most common mixing approach today, β€œkeep it to the walls” has everything anchored to the Atmos virtual rooms walls for phase accuracy. Apple’s Spatial motor does everything it can to make these mixes sound as the music is β€œas far away as possible,” because that’s how the speaker mix was made. It works fantastic in speakers, but with the HRTF filtering and added room reverb, this β€œkeep it to the walls” approach has to be tweaked to work on Apple Music.

Now, to compensate for Apple Music, I’m adapting my mixes to Spatial audio, and putting things that are intended to be close to the listener, closer to the middle of the Dolby Atmos virtual room. This way the music sounds fantastic on Spatial, but is a little compromised in phase accuracy in speaker playback. I have come to learn where the limits are and how to adapt the mix without ruining the speaker playback, but it is an ever ongoing process.

That’s a bummer about your Bohemian Rhapsody experience! On my system, the Apple Atmos mix is markedly similar to the Scheiner 5.1 mix on Blu-ray. Just a bit of depth added. Perhaps this depth could be construed as less Freddie, but his vocals are consistently present.

No crashes here (Apple TV 4K).

You are so right - Apple has a lot of work ahead of them, especially in cataloging, search functions, and providing some level of provenance. Given the newness of the service, so far I give them a passing grade. Long term we’ll see :)

That was my experience as well. In fact, I'm not even certain that the Atmos verson is a genuine remix - it sounds as if they took the old 5.1 mix and duplicated some of the rear-channel information in the ceiling speakers.

I think that's what they did with one of the Rush Atmos tracks from Moving Pictures. Took Chycki's so-so 5.1 mix and upmixed some of it to the ceiling...

primo Luther Vandross in Atmos? πŸ‘€

yes pretty please...!!

ps. i've long wondered if, since this was yet another album Sony released on Stereo SACD only, they had a 5.1 mix tucked up their SACD sleeves all along, as was later revealed for Bat Out Of Hell, Toto IV, etc... maybe this new Atmos mix uses an unreleased mix at its core?
