I had a feeling that the Serge could turn out to be 5.1 as it had been released recently as the 3 disc set with the DD 5.1. I would have thought access and rights to the surround mix was still current and easier to include. Is it possible that some of the previous SACD releases that appear in stereo as BDA simply didn't carry the 5.1 mix with the rights and permissions or indeed the masters weren't archived in the same way?

Perhaps this may be the issue / stumbling block ??

Are you expecting your copy of Serge G today ?

What's the point of the extra tracks, if they're not of the same audible quality ?? ( It's like they decided, " We'll stick these on, consumers will think they're getting more value "....are they forgetting that these discs are touted as, " High Fidelity, Pure Audio " ?? )

They are only replicating what the standard redbook issue has become -if they were now left off, there would be complaints (as there are about the Quincy release , just 34 minutes long).

These 5 tracks were released with the DVD anthology and the SACD releases in 2003 -they were included in 5.1 on «Infiniment» but not on the SACD of «Brel».

When the latter was released as an upgraded digipak, the 5 tracks were appended to that release making his 1977 masterpiece a 17-song affair.

All of this came, with much controversy: Brel considered them "unfinished" and had issued instructions in a letter for them to remain unissued -but in actual fact only until further instruction from him, instructions which never came because he fooled them all by snuffing it six months later.

His wife gave the go ahead -the musicians objected.

On this BD, I can hear the difference between the two sets of recordings but probably because I'm used to the what seems to be superior sound from «Infiniment».

That's what I'm asking in effect. I wasn't going to plunge for another 20€ when I already own several copies including the 5.1 (you're in for a rare treat, by the way. The vocals are luscious, not to mention the surround mix).

Among my copies is the original highly-respected Philips CD.

Perhaps Jon could start a Poll thread ? Seems a few of us are buying this BD-A.

I realise of course that the DSD contained within the multichannel SACDs is retrievable and thus transferrable to PCM. For all the wonderful debate and insight into surround sound to be found on QQ there is a lack of detail with regards to the archiving of original DVDA and SACD surround masters. I don't know where/how and what is archived.

very good points made! (y)

mostly pretty obvious things I'd overlooked as reason for the lack of 5.1 where it was on SACD before!

- the 5.1's are possibly missing in action,
- or in a format that couldn't be retrieved (easily?),
- or there's rights issues,
- or onerous publishing and deemed just not worth the outlay.

there's also the possibility the 5.1 mixes of so many of these OOP French SACDs were deemed to be redundant on the basis they're crap with just a load of ambient reverb or double stereo..!?@:

I recall reading somewhere (I'll look around for it later, probably on here or SHF) that Sony were rumoured to have no idea where a number of their archived DSD files & 5.1 master mixes were! after their USA-based SACD (was it in NY?) project shut down, I think there were rumblings the whole shebang was chaotic at best!

now I doubt UMG have been so remiss.. but you never know.. 10+ years is plenty of time for these surround mixes (most of which have never seen re-release since) to go missing!

QQ member ThomC would know all about the Sony SACD situation (he's surround mix supremo Thom Cadley, you'll see him namechecked on lots of excellent Sony 5.1 SACDs as the man doing the mixing). I don't think he's posted here for a while but it would be interesting to see if he had heard such rumours about the status/whereabouts of Sony's DSD & 5.1 archives.

Loving the mic pops on Barbara's «Aigle Noir» coupled with an agreeable slight tape hiss.

sounds like its authentic and true to the "Pure Audio" moniker & at least it's not "no-noised" or been messed with.. just wonder if it was such an obvious "High Fidelity" candidate..!?@:

only 34 minutes!? :yikes

no wonder people are up in arms! :(

was there extra "bonus" material that could have been added to the Quincy Jones "Bossa Nova" blu-ray?

I'd still like to get it (and the Pierre Henry/Bejart, Nina Simone, Getz/Gilberto, Ella & Louis & Serge's Melody Nelson) but I'm a bit reluctant til I get some idea of how they all sound!

Did you buy any of those titles on your trip to Limoges, Culabula?

Yes indeed! I've listened to the DD version (which still sounds as good as I've ever heard DD, if not a little hot in the centre channel) this morning but the courier hasn't been yet. I'm in South East London but the postal service is nigh-on unfathomable ;)

Thankfully my DHL man arrived earlier today ! :D

Just on my second listen now ( 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, first, and now 5.1 LPCM ) I love DTS-HD MA, where films and live music concerts are concerned but I think this ( and The Raven / SW disc ) may be a tad too bright ? I think LPCM may be a little less bright, and more controlled ??
One thing is, this is a wonderful disc. Prominent vocal(s) Nice orchestration from the rears, overall good use of soundfield. Very funky, groovy, lush, sexy & cool !!
Two essential purchases, ( with the BTE, disc ) in the last two days.....can't be bad !! (y) :phones

I've found similar results with the Wilson disc too, I'll generally defer to the PCM. If you like PCM on BDA then if you don't have it, I would highly recommend The Last Waltz (it's region free BD) as the PCM 5.1 is very lively and full throughout. Also the BD 1080p image really lets you pick out who has been looking for their very good friend Charles backstage ;)

Only Getz/Gilberto which I already have on jSACD. Haven't got round to listening yet -particularly bowled over with the Barbara BDA, who is a great favourite of mine.
