Other than some of the old Quad sound spectaculars, most classical surround is hall effect in the rears. Although I always prefer to buy 5.1, I often prefer listening to them in 2ch. Ditto for Miles' Kind of Blue and Brubeck's Time Out. I like having the option to listen either way. And if I do want to listen to hall, I prefer to listen to the real hall reflections in the rears than synthesized ones.

All 2.0. ( i'm assuming, given the specs on FNAC ) but worth a punt if you haven't got the 5.1 releases, I suppose ?

what are the most spectacular (i.e. v.discrete) Classical Quads you'd recommend checking out Linda?

I have the Tchaikovsky/Bernstein "Nutcracker" Sony SACD which is superb in surround!

The other Sony's I have are the usual ambient presentation, including this one..

..which I believe was a v.discrete quad but had it's balls cut off for 5.1 SACD..!? its nothing special (mix-wise).

It's the real thing - not ambient which is usually favoured for classical recordings.

Thank you, Matt. I'm really excited about receiving my disc ! ( yes, all the Classical & Soundtrack SACD / MC discs I own are all ambient....which disappointed me a little. )

Bartok's Concerto is a favorite piece of mine. The 5.1 mix is pretty good, but the original Quad was spectacular. I've owned four performances of this piece. The best performance was in the 60's with Rafael Fruhbeck-deBurgos conducting, albeit in 2ch.

Miraculous Mandarin was released on a separate Quad album.

Ella & Louis, Nina Simone & The 5.1 Serge

and

Bejart/Pierre Henry, Getz/Gilberto & Quincy's Bossa Nova

I've ordered the Serge as I didn't know till now it had the 5.1 mix included! I love the CD/DVD 5.1 set, Serge is isolated in the centre with the tight grooves of the band set to his left and right in front with a little of the vocal ambience and some of the more left-field sounds coming from the rears. But as soon as the beautiful strings come in they do so completely behind you and the sound field opens out wonderfully. The DD never stopped me listening to this and I even paid the extra Euros so I can have it tomorrow!

Sunderland...
