Just received the Serge Gainsbourg "Histoire De Melody Nelson" from FNAC. Lovely, discrete surround mix in DTS-MA or PCM and even includes the out-takes from the CD/DVD 40th anniversary editon (stereo only but at least hi-res). What a shame the other releases aren't up to this standard.

Thank you very much, more great feedback on this disc! sounds like an essential purchase for us Quaddies (y)

I do wonder why this release alone ended up being the sole 5.1 title when the Layla, Diana Krall, Barbara, Jacques Brel & Johnny Hallyday were also perfect candidates, having already had 5.1 SACD releases, most of which are now very hard to find for real-world prices.

Perhaps Universal wanted just one surround title so they could keep tabs more easily if it sold disproportionately better/worse than the others!? That's the only logic I can apply to their actions!!

I ordered mine yesterday, i'm hoping it's dispatched sometime today ( so should receive tomorrow ) I never dreamt that I would order a Serge Gainsbourg disc, but listened to it on the internet, and really liked the string arrangements.
I knew I would cave in, just wanted to listen to a 5.1 release. Looking forward more to receiving it, now I've read your review ! :)

Thats the power of surround! You find yourself buying all sorts of stuff just for the 5.1/4.0 mixes!

one more glowing review of this BDA and I'm buying it!

I'll also pick up a couple of others from Fnac while I'm at it to make it worthwhile (I'm leaning towards the Nina Simone and the Quincy Jones blu-ray's at this stage but I've heard no reaction at all to how these sound, so they'd be more totally blind buys..!).

I was thinking this yesterday, Adam. I'm sure it's easier to track the sales of one 5.1 title ? Come on everyone, buy Serge Gainsbourg !!!

I was seriously considering buying the Beethoven discs, but just thought i'd buy Serge for now.....

Imagine the sales if they'd chosen to trial 5.1 on just the Layla blu-ray, with BOTH the old Mick Guzauski SACD surround mix AND the Elliot Scheiner surround mix from the DTS disc in the Box set together with Hi-Rez Stereo..!!??!!

That would have sold out straight away just with QQ members snapping it up..!!

Very likely true ! I guess they thought they might sell more of a French artist ( given that they're being sold in France ) ?
I wonder how many overseas sales FNAC have had ??

I suspect they've done better than they suspected!

I bet a lot of them have been bought by Brits, hence the UK titles coming next week!

You need to give the surround mix a bit of time to fully kick in as the rears are mostly used for the orchestral parts but there's a nice spread across the front speakers for the "band". The vocals are very prominent. I assume that the (hopefully) more general release will have an English booklet as the current one is French only.

Are these classical titles 5.1? Even if so, the Wagner might be the only one I'd buy. I already have all the Beethoven Barenboim's on 5.1 DVD-A and the Mahler Tilson-Thomas' on 5.1 SACD.

No idea I'm afraid, Linda. If I hear anything I'll report back. I'm doubtful they'll be anything other than stereo but then I'm a bit of a pessimist! ;)

All 2.0. ( i'm assuming, given the specs on FNAC ) but worth a punt if you haven't got the 5.1 releases, I suppose ?
