Hello, Ken Scott here, I just wanted to stop by and thank you all so much for your comments, even the rough ones, about my first foray into the world of ATMOS. I have to say that I'm proud of what Emre and I did and it is so gratifying to see that others enjoy it too. It was never meant to be better than the original just different so I just have to hope that going forward both versions are available. Once again, thanks.
Cheers,
Ken
All the thanks to you, Mr. Scott for taking on this project and doing such a wonderful job. I only hope it’s the first of many (Crime of the Century…..Crime of the Century…..Crime of the Century)

Speak to Universal. PLEASE speak to Universal.
Ken, this is really great news that you've joined our little band of music surround enthusiasts.

If you would like to confirm the details of who to contact, consider it done 👍

I and many others, pray for the release of 'Crime of the Century' in surround let alone Atmos.
Such a truly fantastic release.
It's certainly in my top five of albums.

By the way, I thought your Atmos decision making with 'Spiders From Mars' was very tastefully done.

Bravo 👏
Keep up the good work - especially with other classic Bowie titles - please!!! 🙏🏼

Thanks for joining, its great to hear from people who actually do the mixes.

For Crime Of The Century, an album I've loved since it first came out, and would be great in Atmos, which Dept. do we email at Universal?

As we've not seen any before would Supertramp object to an Atmos mix?

Now that Ken Scott posted here, I went back to check my comments where I rated the mix as an 8. Posted after my first listen and my beef was based mainly on not being wowed like I was with the Atmos Larks Tongues. Perhaps not a fair point of reference but I'll revisit after I digest Apostrophe.

Good afternoon everyone,
Once again, thank you for all your comments. Just a couple of things to point out.
As far as drum sounds go, I NEVER compress or limit drums unless I'm trying to recreate the Ringo sound. The Fairchild 660 was such an important part of his sound.
I'm sorry about Ronno's guitars ( & the SC ARP ) but the more you push one thing the more you lose something else and I really wanted to show David's vocals off in this mix, he was so amazing.
And finally about Ziggy, the rears. I thought we used them quite effectively but YEMV.
Oh my my, Crime. I agree wholeheartedly about Crime in ATMOS. All I can say is it is in discussion. I was being a little flippant when I suggested writing to Universal as they are the decision makers. The band, management and I are all for it, the label hopefully moving in the right direction. I got to listen to an original tape of Crime the other week with Miles Showell, hint hint, and I have to say I was blown away by how good it sounded after living with the less than great versions released over the years.
I truly hope I get to visit here again to see your views on future ATMOS mixes of mine and Emre's.
Cheers,
Ken

Listened to Atmos mix again. One thing I noticed both times was that the mix has a very analog sound. To the extent that I found myself listening for surface noise like I was playing a vinyl record. Is it the greatest Atmos mix? I'm comfortable with my rating and it's a worthy successor to the old 5.1. More engaging than the recent Bridge of Sighs, which shares a more front centric approach. Most of my surround discs are in the prog realm and are perhaps better suited to more expansive multichannel mixes. In my book, 8 is a good rating and worth a purchase. 5.2.2 system.

Hi Ken, thanks for stopping by, Wow.
I must say I'm hearing a smoother, clearer, more detailed sound than I heard on the 2012 DVD 5.1.
The vocals are really outstanding in the mix, I don''t know what you did but much of the bite and edge on
Davids voice it gone, it's just a very natural, in my room sound.
If I was to ask for more it would be a more complete use of the immersive soundspace. As few others mentioned, it is a bit front-centric with much of the musical action up front as in a stereo mix and a lite use of the rears. We love to hear those instruments more spread out positioned in a 360 painting and using Atmos to add the height dimension.
I do miss the 4 bonus tracks from the DVD, Just a thought.
Best ever Ziggy for sure! Still a 10 from me

I still think the mix is great!
Ken, you are a brave man for stepping into a listener/collector forum such as this!

In hindsight, I guess David's vocal is kind of the main attraction on this album. Probably why I consider Man Who Sold the World and Hunky Dory the top of the bell curve and this one down the side! But the original mix did have the band making some noise and sharing the spotlight more equally.

The clarity and fullness of sound is above excellent! Not every surround mix can be Pink Floyd or Flaming Lips style crazy all around but this one doesn't hit as front heavy to me either. Too "pulled apart" like some of the early quad experiments with an instrument in each speaker might be a curiosity but they often don't work very well.

This is my thought as well. I don't have any issues with the back speakers being too soft or low volume or whatever. Most of what ends up in the back speakers is stuff that ends up underneath the original stereo mixes anyway. Stuff like backing vocals, keys, acoustics, etc. And that's the case whether it's David Bowie or Porcupine Tree. The cool thing about all the separation to me has always been the ability to hone in and listen exclusively to those areas of a mix, since they are relegated to their own speaker. They may need to be raised or lowered a bit to get the same balanced sound as the stereo mix (which people will always compare it to), but to do too much or too little of that and throw off the balance will invariably upset far more people than it will please.

This mix is very well crafted and balanced, just like it needed to be.

For Ken Scott's first foray into mixing for Atmos, I think this is pretty amazing. It sounds great, the best I've ever heard this album, but as a small time home engineer/producer/drummer, and mainly just a general surround sound enthusiast, I really like lots of separation and the use of all the surround/ height speakers as a homogeneous whole, with less focus on the front sound field. I've been playing drums for about 40 years, but as a newbie to recording/mixing/producing, I would imagine that whether mixing for 2.0 stereo, 5.1, or Atmos, getting the right balance between cohesion and separation is paramount. I'm lightly toasted while listening to this mix for like the fourth time and commenting, but for a 1st time Atmos mix, I think this sounds absolutely brilliant! And thank you so much for stopping by here Ken Scott! Looking at your oeuvre, I see that you worked with The Dixie Dreggs. One of my pie-in-the-sky wishes would be some Dreggs in Atmos!

Welcome Ken. FWIW this Atmos release has had an impact in my household. Last year my wife of 45 years consented to the installation of four ceiling speakers in our new house to complete my Atmos setup. All the old classic remixes we've listened to her response was "yeah that sounds good". But Ziggy was a big part of her college memories. When we listened to this release she was beyond enthusiastic! So a BIG thank you from both of us and keep up the good work.

Thanks for the work you did making this album sound incredible. I love listening to it on my Atmos system. There is so much more detail available compared to the older mixes. This is the best that Ziggy has ever sounded. Great job.
