So you mean I don't have to spend $50 to get the old DVD-Audio? I can just buy this new one for $19? Sold!

curious we're "only" getting DVD-A on this (makes sense after the first two ELP remixes I suppose) but not BD-A too a la Yes & XTC, especially seeing as this is the legendary BSS after all.. guess the Blu will come one day, or maybe never if Sony stick to their downloading guns!

Funny.. Sony have got a track record of inventing a format and pulling the rug out from under it (SACD.. DualDisc... to name but two that have directly affected us QQ-ers!) but that they should create the BD and never release any music on it is a ..surprise!

Is it not funny that dvd audio keeps dribbling out?@: Here and there, not bad for a "dead" format.

I bought this DVD-Audio in 2000… OK, the sound was not perfect but I remembered when I saw ELP in Paris in 1974, when they played BSS during the "Welcome back my friend…" Tour, the sound turned around the hall…magic ! This DVD-A made me 30 years younger !!
Then, I did a good deal: I bought for 35 euros in 2000… I ripped it with DVDFab to my multimedia reader (PopCorn Hour) and I sold it on eBay to a french ELP fan for 70 euros last year !

And now, I ordered (17 $ + 13 $ shipping = 30 $, the account is good with my DVD-A's deal !) this new remix in 5.1… who will make me 40 years younger !! :spot

That suks! $23.00 with post in the US. Effing vat!

Well, I suppose that's true however the "old" dvd-a *is* a different 5.1 mix than what will be on the new disc.

The new one will be $19? I thought they were going to make a box set out of it with several useless CDs.

A source on the IMWAN forum also says that the "Trilogy" remix will be out in the Fall (Sept/Oct) of this year!
Now it's already been pushed back several times so I'm not necessarily holding my breath that it will stay this way, but here's hoping it does! :)

Thanks. It says 5.1 mix. No mention made of a stereo mix being on the dvd-audio disc, but hopefully there will be (unlike the original dvd-audio disc which required a downmix to be done by the player).

To straighten the3 content issues out for all who are curious, here's what I am allowed to tell you at this point.

2013 Jakko Stereo Remix - 24/96 MLP Lossless & PCM
2013 Jakko 5.1 Remix - 24/96 MLP Lossless, Dolby Digital, DTS 9624
Original Stereo mix 2013 Remaster - 24/96 PCM & possibly MLP Lossless, depending on space available to me.
Browseable galleries will also accompany the MLP streams.

More info as & when I am cleared to provide it but I can say that Andy Pearce has done a great job of the remaster - very sensitively done - and this is something I do not ever say lightly.

such a shame :( maybe part of why SW didn't do any more ELP remixes after the 1st two albums? He's a busy man, he'd probably rather not waste his time and talents on artists that don't appreciate what he brings to the table, beyond the "trendy" cache of Porcupine Tree that Palmer is implying (rather rudely and unnecessarily imho.) as a record label marketing ploy rather than having any artistic merit. I'll bet Palmer's not complaining about the royalties from the faddish reissues and the new fans that the remixes he deems pointless have brought.. personally I wouldn't be buying anymore ELP records at this stage of the game without surround & remixes to up the interest and potential sound quality benefits etc and I suspect I'm not alone in this.

Carl is very talented. However he does have an attitude. He chooses to be suspicious and think that people are messing with his legacy. I doubt he ever heard the 5.1 mixes or stood still long enough to hear a proper explanation of it. Given his attitude, maybe they thought why bother?

fred & tim have nailed it here, I do declare...

As a fan; I love ELP & I will buy the new 5.1 offering, stat. As an objective observer, I think Carl is ill-served by his disgruntled attitiude & he is clearly ignorant of Steven Wilson's absolute brilliance as a mixing engineer. Funny, I never thought I would ever think "thank God the record company is telling an artist what to do!". In this case, Thank God! Cause we are getting another crystal clear, absolutely silent-noise free 5.1 mix of BSS. I personally think Carl has no concept of what the "listener" who pays his bills(us peeps here) look for in music. Although he wasn't exactly clear in his criticism, he didn't ssem to like the very first DVD-audio 5.1 remix. WTF???

Carl Palmer: You will pry Steven Wilson's 5.1 remixes or ELP & Tarkus out of my cold-dead hands before I give them to anybody!:howl

Re the old BSS 5.1: Still You Turn Me On in 5.1 is worth the price of the disc. Karn Evil 9 pt II is amazing on the disc. Yeah, I know they got the vocals wrong on Benny...., but jeesh. OK, a challenge: Crank up the 5.1 DVD-A or later SACD, and then play your best 2.0 issue of BSS. Then post back! ;)

All performing musicians live their life in mono. They need to make sure they hear themselves on stage. That is a whole different thing than passive listening to music. Does Carl ever even listen to music in 5.1???@:

Goes to show, we should always be thankful for what does come our way in 5.1. It is so hard fought & is always such a struggle.

It warms the heart to know that Neil Wilkes is authoring this treat!

For me, I can't wait for the new BSS, and yes, I pray daily for Trilogy in 5.1 to follow soon.

Thanks so much Neil! So glad this reissue series will continue to be true DVD-A!
Do you know whether it's Andy Pearce's remaster or Jakko's 2013 remix that is used for the CDs? From the ELP webstore listing, it looks like Disc 1 is the remaster and Disc 2 is bonus material, but I think most of us would prefer Jakko's remix on CD to yet another remaster, but I'm just glad this remix series is continuing, long enough at least to see "Trilogy" released in the fall! :)

Thanks for that information Neil. I had already preordered this one...after all, who can argue with a $17 DVDA of BSS ;) with a new 5.1 Remix !!

I wouldn't be surprised if the price gets jacked up by the time it is actually released.

Neil: Thanks as always for the technical data. :) I would ask one question please:

What is known about the provenance of the source 2.0 tape used for the "Original Stereo mix 2013 Remaster" or is it even a tape? If it is digital, what was its sampled source tape?

P.S. The BSS content posted above is perfect for me. Obviously the 5.1 MLP is the main course but I am very interested to hear Jakko's stereo remix. Coming from the multi-track should make it an absolutley no hiss/noise mix. Can't wait!

Went ahead and placed a pre-order even though I'm not a huge ELP fan. Can't pass up a new mix at a normal retail price vs tracking down an original at current market value. Will be a nice addition to the collection.
