I'll certainly not pre-judge on one person's initial review but I appreciate a dissenting opinion too - getting 25 "it's awesome" reviews is nice but we all have different perspectives so what's good for me may not always float your boat.

I'm not trusting any reviews until I either hear it myself or read a review from the likes of JonUrban, BobRomano, timbre4, etc.

Hey Skippy!

What about me???:howl

:sun

About our first BSS review: I LOVED the first two ELP 5.1 remixes by SW so I hold out hope on the new BSS. Either way, I already own the 2001 DVD-A so I will still enjoy the box set for everything else it has. But these comments certainly don't bode well. At least I hope they get the vocals right on Benny The Bouncer!

Where is TarkusNJ? We need his take to get this thing really cookin on all four burners. :yikes

Won't Benny be the alternate take again since the multi's are missing? Unless they've been found in the last 14 years of course.. ;)

Adam, I think you were etc, so of course your review counts, and Dennis you must be the period to end all reviews unless of course you are giving this a 10 even before hearing the disk, that doesn't count.

aww shucks.. very kind of you to say!
(I wasn't being serious of course, I'm more than happy to be an etc. whether an etc about ELP or Xtc..!) :D

as for Dennis Moore.. Dennis Moore, Dennis Moore, et cetera, et cetera..!! :ugham:

Adam I knew you were kidding, yes and Dennis Moore, he's the man and ELP is his band and we all know 80's music sucks..... :)

You are probably going to give it a '10' no matter what, simply cause it's ELP in High-Res 5.1, am I right? ;)

Uh... uh.... well... hmm, lemme c.... Wha...What was the question again?@:

@FredBlue: I didn't know the multis were missing. I just assumed the engineer chose the wrong take. If the multis were missing how did they do the 5.1? It sounds like Benny was discrete 5.1, no?

I take back at some of what I said. This mix has many good things about it. You know it is a different take and it blindsided me a bit. I took this disk to my 2ndary system and gave it s go and came away with better feeling about this mix. Maybe I will come to love it like I love Vangelis' Earth (what I felt was his worst became my first). But I should have been blown away on my Big system.

sorry I meant the vocal take we all know was missing at the time of the DVD-A remix afaik :)

No worries m8, we'll chalk it up to opening night jitters. ;)

You have wonderful equipment! Have you listed your gear in your profile for all of us to gawk at???

What about the vocals volume in KarnEvil 9 pt III? I love my 2001 DVD-A but I am excited to hear Jakko's mix as well. Did they get the vocals right on Benny The Bouncer?

@FredBlue: If the multi-tracks are present for BSS then all the vocal takes for Benny would be on the same tape. The problem would be queueing to the right part to find that exact take, I would think. I always guessed the engineer just got lazy and didn't find the exact vocal take. Its gotta be there on the 24 track tape(I think BSS was 24 tracks, yes?) I loved how Greg went from Cockney to his regular clear tenor. The take in all Cockney is too much!

Very sad abut Giger. Just walking about when you are in your seventies and above can be very dangerous. wow.

I'm not ready to stick my neck out (and put it on the chopping block!) just yet.. but I am really enjoying the new mix.. and especially mastering and fidelity on the new DVD-A are superb.. but earlier on I compared the 5.1 on the old Rhino DVD-A with the 5.1 on the new Sony DVD-A earlier and just wanted to give some first impressions..

- The old Rhino DVD-A is noticeably louder than the new Sony DVD-A (approx 5dB master vol. on my rig),
- Vocals are much more centre channel-centric on the new mix (some may have preferred it the way it was, I am a big fan of vocals in the centre when it's done well),
- The new mix has more piano & keys in the rear than the old (which I love!),
- Bass is louder (but not necessarily fuller or for the better) on the old than the new, whereas mid has much more clarity & detail on the new mix (probably because bass hasn't been boosted?) bass notes have a more musical less boomy feel on the new mix,
- The old seems at first to be a more adventurous mix but the new strikes me as being more discrete.. yet a bit less playful (if that makes any sense) though there are quite a few crazy round the room pans (etc..) on the new there are more of these on the old mix.. one instance where the old mix does something really fun but nice is in Karn Evil 9 - 1st Impression; "I'll be there", "I'll be there", "I will be there" ping pongs around the speakers on the Rhino mix whereas on the new one its all upfront (minor imho but I preferred the effect it gave in the Rhino mix as it interpreted the lyric a bit more creatively on the old mix, for me),
- From what I could make out by comparing old 5.1 to new 5.1 to Stereo the lead vocals on "Benny" are the same as the original stereo mix remastered on the new DVD-A and not what's on the old DVD-A but the differences weren't as stark as I remembered from the first time I heard the old 5.1 (where I nearly fell off my chair) but I need to check it all out again to be totally sure (been proven wrong with this kind of thing before and don't want to mislead anyone on here now but pretty sure they've got it right this time),
- If I have a criticism of something I was hoping for (its minor and the old mix was the same in this regard) the vocals on "Still.." still don't have the same amount of reverb as they do on the old stereo or the same feel/'texture' as the original mix but they now have such presence and clarity I can almost forgive this..

..more to follow as I play the new mix again (and again and again!) and compare more with the old 5.1 :)
