Thanks Adam for the review. Can you please tell us your impressions on the packaging? How good are the book's contents?
I have the 3 discs edition on preorder, but I found the big box on fnac.es for 67 euros and I'm hesitating what to do.
Thanks!

Pic of BSS box showing LP (nice thick vinyl) with lyrics sheets, documentary on DVD-V (which isn't in a slot in the gatefold but in its own card sleeve, just slips in with the LP)..

a brief word on the little card sleeves for the individual discs.. there are no internal poly sleeves but the card is smooth on the inside not the rough board style so I doubt the discs will get scratched up, though people may want to use their own inner sleeves for the 3 CDs and 2 DVDs.

The vinyl is in a nice black paper sleeve with poly liner and window. Lyrics are gorgeous with round cut out as you can see (I popped the LP thru it so you can see the label.).

The care lavished on this set is very evident from the moment you take the LP gatefold sleeve out and start looking through everything.

I haven't worked my way through everything inside yet (there's way too much to do in a day!) but so far I have to say its a triumph for all involved.

For ELP fans I'd say it's pretty much essential.. and for people who love the BSS album more than they love the band itself (sorry but it's how I feel.. ..this particular album holds a very special place in my heart).. the box is a fitting tribute to a total masterpiece of a record to me.

Thanks Adam, looks excellent!

anytime (y)

I meant to say about the book, it is a paperback of what I'd call "coffee table" style presentation.. I'm not sure many hardcore fans will learn a great deal from it (though I need to go through it in more detail to be fair).. there's lots of photo's, brief words from all 3 Messrs E, L and P on their thoughts on the album and an essay I haven't read yet (iirc its by Chris Welch?) I can't check now I'll look again later, I've put the set away (I need to go to the bank and pay in some money to pay for all this stuff! ).

One absolutely riveting thing in the liner notes is Jakko making mention of QUAD MIXES being discovered in London.. :yikes

Take a look at this..

I'd guess those might be the Welcome Back My Friends mixes? That'd be an awesome find...c'mon, lets get that album done too!

Could well be.. Let's hope so.. what I do know, is this is more proof that useable Quad tapes are being held in various archives by all sorts of labels & studios around the world and haven't necessarily all been junked or left to rot, as a lot of us fear as the years go by.

Very interesting and tantalising comments by Jakko.. possibly the most interesting thing in the accompanying booklet for this box set that I picked up on scanning through it just the one time.

I wonder if QQ Neil can give us any more info on what's exactly on those Quad tapes and the likelihood of any of those mixes escaping the vaults courtesy of Sony anytime soon?

I just listened all the 5.1 remix (PCM, Dolby, DTS...original and 2014) : I think all the remix are well… except the last title "Karn Evil 9 3rd Impression" ! At the beginning, too much basses (we can't earring Moog synthesizer !) Sorry my english is too bad to explain all my feelings (I know this album since 1972… when I was in college, I did my math assignment in listen this album without stop: very effective for mathematics !), but I think this mix could be better ! :yikes

Quad mixes that are KarnEvil 9 live

This is what in English is termed as a bombshell. :yikes :yikes :smokin  (y) :phones

I would bet that Jakko even inquired if he could include them in the box.

I couldn't care if they are the WBMF takes or ELP live from Bayone, New Jersey... I just want them now.

Isn't it amazing how all the old analog tapes were available to Jakko. I guess once a record company decides to make
an expensive world wide release box set, old or lost tapes magically appear!

I can't think of a more wonderful surprise!

Thanks FredBlue for all your efforts showing us the new box. Mine is being shipped.

Mine was waiting (on the door step!) when I got back last night, I had a look this morning, and thanks for the comment about the DVD-V I'd missed it buried in there. First impressions on listening to the 5.1 are good, I heard stuff I'd missed before on all the previous versions. I wonder what else is lurking around in the Olympic archives?

.....and Dennis, especially for us fans of the non-slithering form of insanity, but sadly not in surround, http://www.superdeluxeedition.com/news/monty-python-total-rubbish-the-complete-collection-box-set/

Sorry to go off topic, but yes. The two Firesign Theatre quad albums are excellent!

FYI - Weird Al ain't bad in surround...... White and Nerdy off Straight outa Lynwood is excellent! (If that's you're thing) ...
