Taking a break from 'Serious Cinema' I watched with delight John Water's 1990 Musical/Comedy CRY BABY in UHD4K with a fantastic immersive DTS~HD MA 5.1 soundtrack.

Hot off his late 80's sitcom, 21 Jump Street, heart throb Johnny Depp has the lead role of CRY BABY and a 17 year old Amy Locane, still in attendance at a New Jersey High School, plays the role of his amor, Allison.

John Waters had a knack of 'collecting' people for his films and has populated it with actors as diverse as Willem Dafoe, Traci Lords [former **** star], Susan Tyrrell, punk rocker Iggy Pop, Ricki Lake, David Nelson [from Ozzie and Harriet], Troy Donahue, Joey Heatherton, Hearst heir, Patti Hearst and Andy Warhol staple Joe Dallesando and Waters' mainstay, Mink Stole. In the bonus extras, Brad Pitt tried out for the part of Milton Hackett a member Cry Baby's gang, the Drapes but the role went to Darren E. Burrows of Northern Exposure fame.

Operating on his first big budget film [$12M] Waters managed to lavish the film with incredible music and set pieces and upon its release was not well received by both critics and box office returns but has since accumulated a healthy Cult Status.

LOVED every minute of John Waters CRY BABY and there is talk of turing it into a Broadway Musical much like his award winning HAIRSPRAY.

Kino Lorber's Native UHD4K transfer is FABULOUS. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for a fun evening of non serious cinema!

I saw this when I was handed a pair of pre-release screening tickets by (presumably) studio people at a mall in CA. At that time, I had never seen a John Waters film and had no idea what I was watching. I did not like it.

As an aged film buff, I've definitely come around on Waters, but I haven't watched this since. I should really do that.

Kino Lorber certainly pulled out all stops on this release. The bonus features alone are wonderful with multiple interviews. FUN, FUN, FUN!

I met Waters when I saw the Broadway production of HAIRSPRAY and he kindly signed my date's poster....which she eventually gifted to me! He was very gracious. I also told Marissa Jaret Winokur who played Tracy in the original production that she was destined to win the Tony Award that year...which she did!

With a title as innocuous as MONKEY MAN I wasn't expecting much from Dev Patel's directorial debut but boy was I wrong! Now streaming on Amazon Prime in 4K in Dolby Atmos and HDR I found it to be an astonishing watch. A Revenge Epic of sorts, Patel proves himself not only to be an amazing performer but an astute cinema visionary. If you subscribe to PRIME I implore you to give it a chance. You won't be disappointed!

Also available from Universal Pictures in Native UHD4K with a very discrete ATMOS soundtrack!

I’m ’a watchin’ right now.

Last Year At Marienbad (1961) 4K:

I got this one: https://www.amazon.com/Last-Year-Ma...31373005&sprefix=last+year+at+,aps,392&sr=8-1

The previous Studio Canal BD I had was titled Last Year IN Marienbad while this Studio Canal 4K is titled Last Year AT Marienbad. Different sources state it's 1960 and others 1961 too. Still not as confusing as the movie itself though.

Audio is still only dual mono but fidelity is fine (not that I speak French).

4K image is superb.

A great flick that I've gotten more out of with successive watches.

Digging’ the haunting mixes of “Somebody to Love” and “Roxanne”. Overall not my type of movie, but I like Dev Patel and enjoyed it. A little bit of Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite in there too if you get my meaning. Dev is impressive, fully engaged in his martial arts skills and lean muscle. But extended fight scenes in films always bore me. “Let’s get on with the movie!” Also just a bit too violent and bloody for my taste. Still, worth a look.

Yes, it is VERY violent but probably accurately portrays everyday life in India which effectively outlines their outdated caste systems, rampant corruption but I also relished the counterbalance between the corporal and spiritual aspects which I thought Patel captured rather brilliantly.

Akin to aspects of Tarantino's Kill Bill 1 & 2 and any of the John Wick films [but BETTER, IMO].

Go grab a br of Hidden Fortress ... lets see if that gets me a 4k release

;-)
That is actually pretty likely. Toho made a whole batch of 4K SDR masters of Kurosawa’s stuff, I believe they put out their own (not-English friendly) discs of those at the start of this year.

Slowly we’ve been seeing Kurosawa 4K’s from Criterion. Dreams, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo/Sanjuro are either out or confirmed. BFI has their own Seven Samurai release that has some sort of HDR10, iirc

Aye, the wait is killing me.
Seven Samurai in 4k was the best I have ever seen it.
Very crisp and less visual artifacts than even the recent Criterion BR.
Sure there are some fuzzy parts, like their meeting Kyuzo during his duel, but I have never seen that clearly.
