Taking a break from 'Serious Cinema' I watched with delight John Water's 1990 Musical/Comedy CRY BABY in UHD4K with a fantastic immersive DTS~HD MA 5.1 soundtrack.

Hot off his late 80's sitcom, 21 Jump Street, heart throb Johnny Depp has the lead role of CRY BABY and a 17 year old Amy Locane, still in attendance at a New Jersey High School, plays the role of his amor, Allison.

John Waters had a knack of 'collecting' people for his films and has populated it with actors as diverse as Willem Dafoe, Traci Lords [former porn star], Susan Tyrrell, punk rocker Iggy Pop, Ricki Lake, David Nelson [from Ozzie and Harriet], Troy Donahue, Joey Heatherton, Hearst heir, Patti Hearst and Andy Warhol staple Joe Dallesando and Waters' mainstay, Mink Stole. In the bonus extras, Brad Pitt tried out for the part of Milton Hackett a member Cry Baby's gang, the Drapes but the role went to Darren E. Burrows of Northern Exposure fame.

Operating on his first big budget film [$12M] Waters managed to lavish the film with incredible music and set pieces and upon its release was not well received by both critics and box office returns but has since accumulated a healthy Cult Status.

LOVED every minute of John Waters CRY BABY and there is talk of turing it into a Broadway Musical much like his award winning HAIRSPRAY.

Kino Lorber's Native UHD4K transfer is FABULOUS. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for a fun evening of non serious cinema!

I saw this when I was handed a pair of pre-release screening tickets by (presumably) studio people at a mall in CA. At that time, I had never seen a John Waters film and had no idea what I was watching. I did not like it.

As an aged film buff, I've definitely come around on Waters, but I haven't watched this since. I should really do that.

Kino Lorber certainly pulled out all stops on this release. The bonus features alone are wonderful with multiple interviews. FUN, FUN, FUN!

I met Waters when I saw the Broadway production of HAIRSPRAY and he kindly signed my date's poster....which she eventually gifted to me! He was very gracious. I also told Marissa Jaret Winokur who played Tracy in the original production that she was destined to win the Tony Award that year...which she did!
