I just watched the 2017 4K live action one last night and quite enjoyed it. Not a ton of surround action but it was alright. Some really cool lows though and nice Blade Runner-esque visuals. Michael Pitt and Scarlett were good too.

The streets of Bed-Stuy come alive in the active soundscape of this DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix, and the music, featuring the jazz work of Lee's father Bill and Public Enemy's ubiquitous "Fight The Power" never sounded better (bring the BASS!). The violence depicted in the film is especially enhanced by the surround mix. This film still speaks volumes over thirty years after it was made.

I've purchased this one recently. Looking forward to watching what the guys at Criterion were able to do with this film. The packaging is excellent, and there's a nice thick book included.

WHOA! This Criterion Blu-ray is an alien revelation!

Sound designer Ben Burtt's 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack takes this spectacle to the next level! My subwoofer was rumbling every time the death ray fired! And the soundstage comes cacophonously alive during the scenes of destruction--this is a must hear upgrade to the original mono! It's the focus of one of the many wonderful bonuses on this disc. Thanks as always to @4-earredwonder for another stellar recoRAMdation!

Oh man it was sogreat to run across this post. I will definitely take you up on your " recoRAMdation ". This is my favorite version of this movie. A hundred years ago I bought an LP record of the original Orsen Welles broadcast. It captivated my imagination right away & I've been in love with the story & characters ever since.

Also, from the linked Slant review:

These ‘50s films often strove for a dream logic that was enhanced by the methods of creating their special effects, from mattes to paintings to miniatures and puppets. This handmade quality is naturally, resonantly unreal, while CGI often encourages filmmakers to achieve a kind of anonymous, forgettable realism that isn’t usually realistic anyway, fashioning a worst-of-both-worlds aesthetic.

To touch on this briefly, I totally agree. With The Last Star Fighter we saw the dawn of CG FX to be used whenever possible. But prior days if someone fell to the ground off a 10 story building, yes, someone, a stunt actor, actually fell off a building on to an air bag. Or remember that great Terminator chase scene with the gasoline tanker truck? Yup that was a real truck with someone driving & even if the explosion was carefully staged it was sensational. I'll also say from that time period it was great to record dialogue as the cameras rolled instead of using it just for ADR prompts for over dubbing. In some ways I know CG stuff & ADR is technically superior to older methods... but in other ways it just ain't got no soul.

The Dolby Atmos mix on this release is absolutely 4KILLER!

Scary goodness throughout the film. Great sound design that makes FULL use of the soundscape. During the scariest moments, i wasn't sure if i was shaking from fear or from my subwoofer! One of the best movie soundtracks i've heard--it REALLY enhanced the movie experience!

Sarah's Key (2010) BD:
1. I watched this last night and there was a fair amount of LFE + surround activity going on right from the get-go (e.g., off-camera door knocking coming from behind). Really good to hear considering it's basically a drama. I was more impressed by this than most superhero movies.
2. Such a gem of a movie. How it didn't clean up at the Oscars is a mystery (not that I care a hoot about awards, but come on. George C. Scott had the right idea!).
3. A superb performance by the little girl. Wow.

the DTS-HD MA 5.1 does sound great when the musical numbers kick in, and one of the 8 Academy Awards this film won was for sound!

Clem, perhaps a newer UHD4K remaster will restore the sound to it's Academy Award GLORY! GREAT FILM. Saw two versions of the Broadway Play, including the original with Joel Grey as the Emcee!
