The 5.1 mix on this is a lot lower in volume than the dvd-a. Not sure if more dynamic or not.

Just listened to the first track and compared the Atmos to the 5.1. It is surprisingly LESS adventurous than the 5.1, the vocals are more washed out, and the bass isn't as tight. They've also replaced "The test begins NOW" and "The test is over" with, well, noise.

I hope this isn't indicative of the rest of the disc. Yikes...

EDIT:

Wait! The amp for my overhead speakers was off! Ok, going to listen again. Sorry!

Ok, now that I'm actually listening to all 5.1.4 Atmos channels, I still prefer the 5.1 mix. The individual instruments come through clearer, the vocals are more upfront and the bass is punchier. And the 5.1 is much more adventurous. I'm so surprised.

Going to keep going and see how the rest of the album sounds...

Ok, tracks 2 and 3 in Atmos are almost as adventurous as the 5.1. But the fidelity of the 5.1 is SO much better. The bass is deeper, the guitars really cut through, I'm so surprised! It's like the Atmos has a gauze-y haze over it, and the 5.1 is just to PRESENT.

RHINO should've hired Elliot Scheiner to do the ATMOS mix as well. Played the 5.1 DVD~A a few weeks ago on my new system and it was beyond SUPER Fantastic!

This is my knee-jerk reaction. I might agree with you. In the opening track, in the 5.1, there is pronounced panning, which is super fun. The Atmos doesn't catch that dramatic panning. At least, I don't think it does.

I've never been good at comparing different mixes as my memory of what I'm hearing isn't the greatest.

I'm the same way, but quickly switching mixes on the disc (even though it causes the song to start over) gives you the immediate gut punch of just how good the 5.1 SOUNDS, compared to the Atmos, which feels like it's a generation or two removed.

Listening now, and not doing an A/B -- been a while since I heard the 5.1 -- but I find the use of the heights significant and interesting. Rather than a panning-fest, there is that full theater effect of Atmos where an expanded field has voices in all directions. The heights rule here so far. [edit: 7.2.4 system]

The Atmos is not dynamic-range compressed at all so really needs to be turned up to do a comparison with the 5.1. Even turning it up doesn't really compare because the 5.1 DR peaks are all near zero where the Atmos is truly dynamic with peaks from zero to -6.05. I don't know of a way to get the DR from Atmos so I extracted the 7.1 to flac and used the SoX vol 4.97dB command to raise the overall volume of the 7.1 flac by 4.97 dB. The lowest peak in the 7.1 was 4.97dB (Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots pt.2) so raising the volume by 4.97dB preserved the dynamic range but brought the overall volume closer to the 5.1.

I'm loving the dynamic range of the Atmos and it doesn't grind on my ears like the 5.1 did. The dynamic-range compressed 5.1 really wore me out and I couldn't listen to it for long. I can listen to this Atmos all day and I don't notice any reduction in bass or clarity, but my ears aren't what they were.

Here are the DR differences between the Atmos and 5.1:

Pretty sure the Atmos mix comes through a lot louder than the 5.1 on this disc. I haven't compared it to my original 5.1 DVD. (Not questioning that the Atmos has greater dynamic range - just saying it's perceptibly louder.)

The 5.1 mix is what got me interested in surround sound back in the day. I've heard this album way more than any other surround mix. So, the 5.1 will always have a certain perfection for me. But the Atmos mix did not disappoint. I enjoyed hearing new details. Beyond the mix being different, there is a pristine clarity to the resolution that I have never heard before. I am even more amazed at the multitudes of production techniques at every level and layer of this masterpiece.

I'm glad that a slightly different approach was used for the Atmos mix. I love all the ping-ponging of the 5.1 mix, but the Atmos mix gives my brain a little more of a break. (I'm near certain that the 5.1 mix gave me headaches for the first few years - like my nervous system didn't quite know how to process everything.)

Simply put, the Atmos mix sounds great to me. The playfulness is still there, and it sounds more epic and huge than ever. There are a few sections that sound almost identical to the 5.1 panning-wise. Maybe 2/3 of the album has similar panning, and the rest is different to some degree. Do You Realize?? is probably the most completely different mix.

That said, I was hoping for more discreet sounds in the height channels. There were maybe 3 specific events that stood out, but the height speakers were mostly reserved for spaciousness and subtle decorations. Like, if one of the ping-pongy songs had treated the height as equally discreet as the horizontal plane (random synth bass notes jumping up, etc.), I would have been happy. That's probably my only complaint.

My brain is so used to hearing the room spin during DYR??, I was kinda waiting the whole song for it to start moving. I look forward to future listens, now that I know what to expect. I'm glad that the 5.1 mix is included with this Blu-ray. Those are my immediate thoughts. I might have more to add later.

Edit: I also would have appreciated less seizure-inducing imagery as an alternative to the visualizer. I most enjoy listening with my eyes closed, but I can still sense the strobing! Easy enough to just turn the TV off, but something like a slideshow of the art would have been nice.

Edit: Also, props to Jon's liner note about how streaming is compressed compared to the Blu-ray - something most people don't realize.

I've seen some people mention that here and I really really don't get it. There are a trove of 5.1 mixes mastered with more compression than Yoshimi, including ones from Beck, Seal, Elton John, and even the Flaming Lips themselves. If something is grinding your ears about Yoshimi's 5.1 mix, I really don't think it's the mastering compression, because most recordings since the late 90s should be flat-out unlistenable to you if that were the case.
