I've seen some people mention that here and I really really don't get it. There are a trove of 5.1 mixes mastered with more compression than Yoshimi, including ones from Beck, Seal, Elton John, and even the Flaming Lips themselves. If something is grinding your ears about Yoshimi's 5.1 mix, I really don't think it's the mastering compression, because most recordings since the late 90s should be flat-out unlistenable to you if that were the case.
It is subtle, but look at the DR numbers to see what I mean. The 5.1 has all of the peaks pushed up to 0; the Atmos is much more dynamic with RMS levels nearly half that of the 5.1. I do have a hard time listening to most everything since the late 90's at any significant volume level, though surround tends to be less DR compressed. DR compression has a place, but not at higher volume with five to nine full range speakers and a sub.

Oh yeah, I didn't think it was necessary, I just question how perceptible it is when it comes to the actual result of the mastering compression itself, as opposed to being confirmation bias or due to some other factor in the sound.

You don't think there is a difference in the dynamics of the 5.1 Yoshimi vs Sea Change?

Not really much of any as a result of mastering.

Again, there is discussion to be had of dynamics in music, but if the 5.1 of Yoshimi is fatiguing to you, the mastering compression is not what's to blame.

I also would have appreciated less seizure-inducing imagery as an alternative to the visualizer. I most enjoy listening with my eyes closed, but I can still sense the strobing! Easy enough to just turn the TV off, but something like a slideshow of the art would have been nice.
Oh my god. It's so overwhelming. Someone's gonna have to help me understand how to put different video over this audio, because it's flat out unwatchable, and it makes it really hard to enjoy the music when then things are flashing like this.

THIS VIDEO IS A SERIOUS SEIZURE RISK. PLEASE KEEP THIS IN MIND BEFORE WATCHING.

THEN TURN THE VIDEO OFF!

Hopefully your remote has something like mine (Cambridge Audio), which has a button called 'Pure Audio', which switches the screen off.

Also, just to note, this is a poll stream, best to keep these non-review digressions to the general stream about this album. Anyway, good luck!

I don't see how this isn't pertinent to the discussion. I literally had to turn the whole thing off because I couldn't handle it.

I didn't know Pure Audio actually allows me to play audio content from my Xbox One X with the TV off. It was flat-out impossible for me to do it any other way. Good to know, and thank you. @SomethingAnything

I have never listened to a single note of this band's music but, very much NOT in my style, I've impulsively ordered this from Amazon in Spain as I saw it cheap (17 €). I'm a huge fan of Elliot Scheiner mixing style and, judging by the comments, the Atmos mix (not by him) seems to be great too. Normally I like psychedelic rock so I think there's a decent chance I won't end up returning this!

What's the dialog norm values for the DTS 5.1 and the Atmos mixes?

The DTS 5.1 is -12dB:

>> M2TS, 1 video track, 1 audio track, 0:49:02, 60i /1.001 (11 chapters)
> 3: DTS Master Audio, English, 5.1 channels, 24 bits, 96kHz, dialnorm: -12dB

But AudioMuxer doesn't show dialog norm for the Atmos:

>> M2TS, 1 video track, 1 audio track, 0:47:33, 60i /1.001 (11 chapters)
> 3: TrueHD/AC3 (Atmos), English, 7.1 channels, 48kHz

I'm not sure if this means it is at the default -31dB (meaning it is disabled) or what.

Thanks, now I know why the Blu-ray 5.1 mix is so much quieter than the DVD-A 5.1 mix.

I wish I could listen to this disc with my TV off. Very annoying visuals, but if I turn my TV off, the audio briefly cuts out every 10 seconds or so.🥃🥃

I suppose it isn't an LG OLED TV, is it? These have the option of easily turning off the screen without turning off the device. That's why I do when I don't want to see the visuals, since the pure audio button of the remote also turns off the blu-ray player's screen, and I enjoy having that one on for track number, elapsed time etc.

Got mine Saturday, listening to the 7.1 today in my car on my way to/from the office. If the second half lives up to the first, another 10 is coming in the poll thread...
