It is subtle, but look at the DR numbers to see what I mean. The 5.1 has all of the peaks pushed up to 0; the Atmos is much more dynamic with RMS levels nearly half that of the 5.1. I do have a hard time listening to most everything since the late 90's at any significant volume level, though surround tends to be less DR compressed. DR compression has a place, but not at higher volume with five to nine full range speakers and a sub.I've seen some people mention that here and I really really don't get it. There are a trove of 5.1 mixes mastered with more compression than Yoshimi, including ones from Beck, Seal, Elton John, and even the Flaming Lips themselves. If something is grinding your ears about Yoshimi's 5.1 mix, I really don't think it's the mastering compression, because most recordings since the late 90s should be flat-out unlistenable to you if that were the case.
